New Challenger Of Record

Signed sealed and delivered before the Italians had even crossed the finishing line. Bertie Bicket, Chairman of The Royal Yacht Squadron Racing based in Cowes, UK and accepted by Aaron Young,Commodore of the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron representing Team Emirates New Zealand. The rules state it has to be an official yachting club to lay down the challenge and in the past was not always done correctly ending up in court.

As expected the British set up of Team Ineos is the new Challenger Of Record for the Americas Cup. Luna Rossa has been the Challenger for the last 20 years and I am not sure if they feel a little miffed about being snubbed or not. Who knows if they would have laid another challenge this time around.

What is interesting to note is this letter was signed and accepted as Team New Zealand crossed the finishing line. The Yacht clubs of the two parties have to sign and accept the challenge which is the custom and history behind this event steeped in tradition.
There are massive advantages by being the Official Challenger of record as you and the Defending Champion being Team New Zealand lay down the parameters for the next 4 years and on how the format of the race will look.

This high speed track style sailing event has gained a new audience and got people like me hooked. Now there is an Americas Cup World Series in June later this year at the place where it all began 170 years ago the Solent, Portsmouth, England. I expect tickets to be sold out in no time depending on travel restrictions.

The AC75 yacht is here to stay at least for the next 8 years, the yacht we have grown to love will now go through some serious development and speeds should only increase. There will be some subtle changes as this would make it far too easy for everyone else and the two teams in charge will lose the advantage they have.

We have heard that teams will only be allowed to build one boat and guaranteed will most likely feature recycled carbon fiber not only in the sails and the mould making process, but somewhere else.

Both Emirates Team New Zealand and Team Ineos are keen to help reduce costs in order to attract more competitors. Wouldn't it be great if there were 10 or more countries involved as this sport has caught the publics attention now. this sport was seen as an elitist type sport and in some ways still is but it has definitely grown as a spectator sport over the last 4-5 months. Covid couch viewers were scanning the tv for anything and got hooked on this event.
