The second match between PSG and Bayern was extremely good even though there was only 1 goal scored in total, compared to the 5 goals of the first match. This time, Bayern had the obligation of scored at least 2 goals in order to qualify for the semifinals while PSG only had to resist and defend the advantage they obtained in the first match.

Important absences conditioned the match for both teams

There were important absences for both teams, Bayern wasn't able to include neither Lewandowski nor Gnabry in either of the matches and this conditioned their attacking capabilities. Lewandowski and Gnabry are 2 of the best attacking players on the team, and without them, it is much more difficult for them to score goals.

On the other hand, PSG had one important absence in the defense since the first match, Marquinhos. This player is extremely important for PSG because without him they are much weaker on the defensive side. He just played 30 minutes in the first match, and yesterday he played 0 since he still hasn't recovered from the injury.

So we had Bayern without their best striker (Lewandowski) and PSG without their best defender (Marquinhos). I guess it is fair to say the absences were almost equal in importance.

How was the match?

First, it is important to remember that on the first match Bayern Munich controlled the ball for the most part and they even had more goal attempts but they weren't as effective as Mbappe, who scored 2 goals in that match. Yesterday, the same happened again with the exception of Mbappe scoring goals.

Bayern Munich dominated everything for the most part, and the only thing PSG was able to do were some thunder-like plays involving Neymar and Mbappe who are simply unstoppable. Bayern Munich was more organized, while PSG depended on creativity from their 2 best players.

Neymar was particularly creative in this match, he was very agile and creative with his dribbling but not very effective with his shots. He hit the post 2 times in the first half! Unlike Mbappe, Neymar isn't a world-class goalscorer. He is great at creating plays, dribbling, and assisting, but he never competes for individual trophies for top goal scorers. He had several opportunities to score and missed them all, not even 1 goal from him.

Mbappe, on the other hand, showed once again how dangerous his super-speed really is. When there are open spaces in front of him nothing can stop him and can easily cause a lot of trouble for the rival team. The ease with which these 2 players can cause good attacking plays offers a great contrast with the overwhelming amount of effort Bayern Munich requires to cause a similar amount of danger. Bayern needs to do everything right, move the ball between a lot of players and luckily they can finish the play with a good shot. Neymar and Mbappe are much more effective at this.

In both matches, Bayern Munich not only controlled the possession of the ball, but they also had more shots and goal attempts. The only reason that explains PSG's victory is Mbappe's effectiveness when shooting.

Bayern's goal was a very ugly header from Choupo-Moting, the header came after the ball bounced from a Bayern's shot, and he was able to defeat the defender than wanted to send the ball away from the goal zone. He also scored a header in the first match by the way. In fact, all 3 of Bayern's goals in these quarter-finals were headers. This shows not only how incapable they were of finishing plays with regular shots, but also the enormous importance of Marquinhos in PSG's defense.

If we start to count the goals after Marquinho's injury at the 30-minute mark of the first match, the result would be 3 goals for Bayern and 1 for PSG and not the regular result of 3-3. Without Marquinhos, PSG was defeated by Bayern with only header goals. This is an important observation to make and shows a key weakness in PSG's defense.

Bayern Munich proved they are a competitive team. Even without Lewandowski, they ended up tying against PSG in the global score. They proved they can be competitive even without their best player, which is something that I don't think can be said about PSG. I don't see PSG competing well without Mbappe on the field. This means Bayern is a more well-rounded team, a more balanced team, and they simply had bad luck losing Lewandowski due to an injury. PSG proved their great dependence on Mbappe's explosive attacking skills and on Neymar's creativity. Their midfield and defense aren't that great.

Right now, I think both Mbappe and Neymar are in the top 5 of the best players in the world, so it shouldn't be surprising to realize their skills are good enough to defeat any team. I even think Mbappe has a lot of possibilities of being recognized as the #1 player in the world if he wins either the Champions League or the European Cup in the summer.

In the end, PSG was able to achieve their revenge after losing the Champions League finale of last season against Bayern, I believe Bayern deserved a better result. Efficiency matters and Mbappe has a lot of it while Bayern's players without Lewandowski have very little. The fact they could only score headers says a lot about this.

Whats next?

In a few hours, I will be watching the second match between Liverpool and Real Madrid. Madrid can be considered as the favorite one after their victory in the first match but I think the match will be exciting and Liverpool will certainly have chances to achieve their objective. PSG's rival in the semifinals will be between Manchester City and Dortmund which are also going to play in a few hours.

Between those 2 teams, I believe everyone agrees that City is much better so I expect them to defeat Dortmund. However, Haaland has been one of the most important football revelations of recent times, and if he is inspired then Dortmund can defeat anyone. In my opinion, the semifinals are going to be PSG vs City and Chelsea vs Madrid. I will even go one step ahead and predict the final, I think it will be City vs Madrid. I guess we will see if I am right or not.

I'm glad to see PSG go through. They bring more flare and excitement with Mbappe and Neymar...

May well be City's year though...

Yeah, watching Mbappe and Neymar is exciting but PSG's midfield and defense aren't as good. City is a more balanced team I believe.
