Both teams have amazing players, Portugal's defense has Pepe, and Ruben Dias who are 2 elite central defenders, while France has Varane, Kounde, and Kimpembe. In the attack, both teams are extremely good and maybe France has a little edge thanks to their attacking trio with Benzema, Mbappe, and Griezmann. Portugal has the best goal scorer of the tournament, CR7, but the other Portuguese attacking players aren't as good as their French counterparts.
Where I think France has an important advantage is in the midfield. Pogba and Kante are simply too dominant in that zone of the pitch, and I don't think Portugal can compete with them, especially when it comes to physical strength.
I was expecting to watch a very even match. Portugal had the risk of being eliminated from the tournament and suffering elimination in the group stage would be a massive failure for them. The only risk France had was losing their first position of the group if Portugal defeated them, or if they tied and Germany defeated Hungary.
Achieving the first position is important because these teams will probably face weaker teams in the next rounds. The teams in the first positions will face teams that ended up in the second position, or in the third position in their corresponding group. That's why it is important to secure the first position because it increases the chances of continuing in the tournament past the next round.
I considered France the favorite team for this match because they have a slightly better team, and because emotionally they would be more stable given the fact there was no risk for them in getting eliminated. Portugal had the risk of becoming too nervous.
I was also excited to watch CR7 against Varane, and Mbappe and Benzema against Pepe. All of them are great players and seeing them on the same match is always a privilege. Without further ado, let's now proceed to discuss what happened in the match.
How was the match?
The match began with France being a little bit more dominant than Portugal. It shouldn't be surprising given the slightly better French squad. However, this French control wasn't as overwhelming as the German control in their matches.
Portugal began trying to keep the match with a slower rhythm, and trying to prevent things from getting too crazy. Let's remember that in their previous match they suffered 4 goals against Germany, 2 of those were own goals by Portuguese defensive players, and it became clear Portugal wasn't able to properly handle extremely intense moments because they kind of get nervous and commit silly mistakes.
France, on the other hand, was much more vertical than Portugal and faster with their moves and their passes. This playstyle allows them to take advantage of the physical strengths of some of their players who are extremely useful for explosive moves. These players can be Mbappe, Pogba, and Kante.
Both teams had goal attempts in the first few minutes of the match, but the best one was from Mbappe. He received a great pass from Pogba and was alone in front of the goalkeeper but his shot wasn't very good and ended up being stopped. Mbappe is, right now, one of the best players in the world, and I honestly expected much more from him in this tournament. He hasn't scored a goal yet, and in the 2 matches with France that I have seen, one against Germany and this one against Portugal, Mbappe's performance wasn't that impressive.
He participated in a lot of attacking plays against Germany but didn't generate a single goal. Against Portugal, he was also active and with several participations but so far he hasn't been very effective. Mbappe's general performance isn't entirely disappointing but it is a bit underwhelming so far.
The first goal of the match happened around the 28-minute mark after several minutes with not much action. The penalty was caused by the French goalkeeper who hits the head of a Portuguese player when trying to reject the ball with his punch, instead of hitting the ball, he hit the player. It was a clear penalty and was easily scored by CR7.
France was very uncomfortable after this goal and Portugal felt much more confident but at this point, I remember what happened in the match between Portugal and Germany. The Portuguese players scored the first goal, felt confident only to screw their match by suffering 2 own goals in 5 minutes.
France's frustration was palpable and they started to receive a couple of yellow cards. It was Mbappe that changed the match right before the end of the first half. He made use of his incredibly fast speed to receive a good pass from Pogba, and when getting into the penalty area, he receives a foul. I was surprised to see Benzema in charge of the penalty because it is usually Griezmann the one that shots them, but he didn't miss and the ball went inside the net. The connection between Pogba and Mbappe has been very important for France in this tournament.
This goal can be considered an important psychological factor because it happened right at the end of the first half. When this happens, the team that suffers the goal begins the second half feeling much more insecure, and the team that scored the goal feels much more confident.
France couldn't have started the second half in a better way, they scored around 2 minutes after it started, it was Benzema again, and the pass was from Pogba, again. The goal had to be checked with the VAR because there was a potential offside but it was confirmed as a valid goal. Benzema had now 2 goals under his name, France was in the lead, and Portugal was on the brink of being eliminated.
Portugal suffered exactly what happened to them against Germany. They were winning, and suddenly in a time-lapse of 5 minutes, they suffer 2 goals that put them at disadvantage. There were still a lot of minutes left, but this second goal had the potential of being devastating for Portugal.
These worrisome circumstances for Portugal lasted until the 58-minute mark where France commits another penalty, this time caused by a handball. CR7 goes again and scores it easily. 2 penalty goals for CR7 and a total of 5 goals in 3 matches so far in this tournament. Not bad at all for CR7.
After this second goal by Portugal and the 2-2 tie between the 2 teams, both teams find each other in a comfortable situation. I mean, France was in the first position, and Portugal had the guarantee of qualifying for the next round if they successfully defended the tie. So in the last 20 minutes, the match got less intense. There was a great shot from Pogba from outside the penalty box around the 68-minute mark but not much else.
I am really surprised to see Pogba's performance in this tournament. He is proving he still is an elite midfielder and I wonder why he has suffered so many performance issues in his club during the past few years. With France he plays great.
This group had a very intense second half because not only the match between France and Portugal was important but Germany was also fighting for its life against Hungary. All the teams' positions changed every time a team scored a goal, and it is exciting for a group to finish like this, with everything at risk.
The group ended with France in the first position, Germany in the second one, and Portugal in the third one. The 3 best teams of the group managed to qualify for the next round, and Hungary, despite their good match against Germany, is disqualified. No surprises in the teams that managed to qualify, but there were still some surprises such as Germany's dominance when playing against France and Portugal, and Mbappe's lack of goals so far.
I believe it is fair to consider CR7 the best player on the group stage thanks to his 5 goals in 3 matches. This was a very intense group and I was happy with the matches I have chosen to see. However, the good stuff is only just beginning :P
What's next?
Now we finally begin the most exciting rounds, those where the losing teams always gets disqualified and there are penalties in case of ties. The round of 16 begins this next Saturday, and I plan to watch several matches of this round.
I am not sure I would be able to watch all the matches but I plan to watch Belgium vs Portugal on Sunday, Croatia vs Spain on Monday, France vs Switzerland on Monday too, and England vs Germany on Tuesday.
These are all great matches and the best is yet to come. Right now, I still think of France as the favorite to win the tournament but Italy would be a close second favorite for me.
