Before watching this match France suffered a surprising tie against Hungary which left Portugal with the chance of keeping a solid first position if they defeated Germany. Let's remember Portugal defeated Hungary 3-0 but they were only able to score in the last 10 minutes, so it could very well have been a tie despite the 3 goal difference.

Germany is competing in this tournament without a proper striker. They have good attacking players such as Muller, Havertz, Gnabry, and Werner, but none of them is a top goal scorer. They remain competitive because of their great players but without a good goal scorer winning challenging matches is much more difficult.

Portugal, on the other hand, has excellent attacking players with one of the best goal scorers in the world, CR7. There is also Diogo Jota, Bruno Fernandes and Bernardo Silva. These attacking players are, in my opinion, better than the German ones, and they could even be as good as the French ones.

CR7 can score goals at any given time and we all know he is simply a goal-scoring machine. It will be difficult for the German defense to stop so many skilled players so before this match, I would have bet Portugal would score at least 2 goals. I also thought Portugal was the favorite to win the match mainly due to this.

If we remember the match between Germany and France, Germany played better, they had more possession and more goal attempts, but their goal attempts were of less quality and with 0 effectiveness. My expectation of this match with Portugal was to see Germany dominating once again, but Portugal scoring the goals and winning the match.

How was the match?

The match started similarly to the one between France and Germany. This means that Germany began the match by completely dominating everything, they had the possession and the more initiative to start attacking plays.

In the beginning, Germany had a lot of trouble scoring their goals, which is also what happened with them against France, and since they don't have a world-class goalscorer I thought these problems would continue to affect them. However, this wasn't the case. They proved they can be extremely competitive even with no main striker. The first sign of alarm that signaled this match could be different was a disallowed goal for Germany due to an off-side around the 4-minute match. This goal showed that Germany could have sufficient goal-scoring skills to defeat Portugal.

While Germany was dominating in the first half, Portugal was able to create a great counterattack that finished with a good goal by CR7 around the 15-minute mark. The entire play was perfect from beginning to end, and at this point, I thought Germany would suffer the same that happened to them in the previous match. Portugal felt very comfortable defending and waiting for good opportunities to attack and so far, this plan was working for them.

Despite the goal, Germany's control of the ball and the match didn't stop. They continued to do the same and overwhelm Portugal's defensive players until eventually, they broke and couldn't stand so much German pressure. Around the 35 minute mark, in one of the many German attacks, a Portuguese defender named Ruben Dias touches the ball and sends it inside the net by mistake. He was trying to prevent Havertz from scoring but he scored an own goal instead. I am sure this was very demoralizing for Portugal but if that wasn't enough, around 4 minutes later there was another Portuguese own goal, this time by a defender named Raphael Guerreiro. This second own goal was devastating for Portugal.

It is ironic that German difficulties when scoring goals was mitigated by the Portuguese defensive players but football can always provide all sort of surprises. These goals energized even more the German players and in the second half, they simply continued to dominate Portugal completely.

The match was very intense because Portugal could create fast attacking plays but the majority of the attacking plays were created by the German players. Muller, Gnabry and Havertz had an awesome match, and the same can be said about Kroos and Gundogan.

Portugal tried to gain a bit more control by introducing Renato Sanchez in the second half and sending Bernardo Silva to the bench but this didn't help much. The other 2 German goals, this time scored by German players and not Portuguese defensive players, came in the minutes 51 and 60. They were unstoppable and Portugal's defense had no way to do their job properly. Germany proved they were the best team and maybe even a candidate to win this tournament.

The last goal of the match was scored by Portugal around the 69-minute mark and this could be an important goal for that team because the goal average is taken into account in order to qualify for the next round. Even though they suffered a horrible defeat, this goal could make a difference down the road.

I was expecting a stronger reaction from Portugal in the last 15 minutes because in their previous match against Hungary, they scored all of their 3 goals in the last 10 minutes of the match. So I was thinking that maybe they will try and do something similar this time. However, they were either too tired or simply unable to create many good goal attempts during those final minutes, and this was mainly thanks to Germany's constant control of the match.

I didn't expect to see such a competitive Germany against France and Portugal, but if they continue like this and if they figure out how to solve their lack of a top goal scorer, then I guess this team could easily achieve the semifinals or even the final. This was a very entertaining match and the best one I have seen in a long time.

What's next?

The next match I plan to see is Portugal vs France, the first position of the group will be defined in this match and I cannot see a clear favorite this time. I would like to see CR7 competing against Varane and Mbappe competing against Pepe, it would certainly be a lovely match.

So far, Mbappe hasn't scored any goal and this doesn't help his chances of winning the Ballon d'Or. France is also giving a poorer performance than expected, so even though I saw them as the clear favorite to win this tournament I am having doubts now. Italy is so far the team with the best performance in the first 2 matches. Individually, maybe CR7 has been the best one thanks to his 3 goals and 1 assist in 2 matches. There is still a long way to go but so far the first 2 matches have provided some surprises.
