Italy wins in the penalties a match that was dominated by Spain! (ENG + ESP)

Spain and Italy are countries where football is part of the culture. They both have important clubs and important national leagues. During the past decade, Spain was able to defeat Italy in the Euro 2012 final with a historic 4-0 and they also beat the Italians in the Euro 2008 in a penalty round. Historically, they both have the same victories against each other, but before the previous decade, Italy had the lead.
That legendary Spanish generation that won 2 Euro and 1 World Cup aren't longer active, the majority of them are retired, and right now in the current Euro, there are just a couple of players that belonged to that generation such as Busquets and Alba.
Italy, on the other hand, has endured a long period of low performance in major tournaments. The last time they won a trophy was in the World Cup of 2006, and they now finally seem to have a squad capable of defeating anyone. They have a good combination of veterans, like Chiellini and Bonucci, and young players, like Barella, Donnarumma, and Chiesa.
I have been saying since France was eliminated that I believed Italy was the team with the slightest highest chances of winning the tournament. I expected Italy to qualify for the final but I didn't expect this to be a match dominated by Spain, much less for it to be decided on the penalties, that was a surprise for me but it was even better because I love penalty rounds.
Without further ado, let's discuss what happened in the match.
How was the match?
At the 3 minute mark, Italy created the first exciting play. It was a long pass to Barella who, thanks to his speed, was able to ditch the Spanish goalkeeper around the border of the penalty box, but then he found himself with a very difficult angle to make a proper shot. Despite that complication, he manages to find some space and the ball hits the post. Everything happened so quickly and I really wasn't expecting this much intensity so early in the match. I think Spain wasn't expecting this either.
In the next few minutes, Italy continued to do fast moves and high pressing and it was clear their plan was to score an early goal. It seemed Italy was going to be the dominant team of the match but this didn't last long.
After the initial Italian intensity, Spain was able to create their own attacking plays and the match got very even. Spain could have scored their first goal after a good filtered pass inside the Italian penalty box to Oyarzabal, but his control wasn't precise enough and he lost the ball. Both teams were playing high-quality football and both were finding opportunities to create good attacking plays.
Around the 20 minute mark, Italy had a good attacking play similar to the one they had at the beginning of the match. The Spanish goalkeeper was ditched by the Italian striker near the border of the area, but once again, the Italians weren't able to make a proper shot. When they were trying to find a good angle, the Spanish defensive players rushed to close any available space there could be, this caused the Italians to quickly lost the ball and no shot was attempted.
That play was disappointing for Italy because it was a very important attempt to finally score, and they could have attempted at least a simple shot to see if it went in but nope, they waited too long and lost the ball. By this point, Spain was slowly becoming the more dominant team. They started to control the ball and the majority of the time was spent on the Italian side of the pitch. Spain had the dominance, but only slightly. Italy was also playing well.
Spain didn't wait too long to have their own attacking play and around the 24-minute mark, Olmo received a good ball inside the penalty box, the Italian defenders could have made a better job covering him, but his shot was stopped by the goalkeeper so nothing too important ended up happening.
Both teams were creating exciting attacking plays, but no goals so far. Something important to mention about Spain is that they were playing without Morata, who is their main central striker. Their attacking players were Oyarzabal, Ferran Torres, and the just mentioned Dani Olmo. Italy, on the other hand, did have players that can play like main central strikers, Insigne and Immobile.
It was maybe the absence of Morata, and the presence of a complete attacking trio with players who are very skilled moving the ball around and creating combinations, that allowed Spain to slowly gain more and more control of the match. Morata is good only shooting the ball, but imagining him outplaying the Italian defense isn't easy. Spain's strategy to play with more skilled guys that maybe aren't entirely great at making shots but are very good at passing the ball between them started to look like a good choice. Bonucci and Chiellini might be great stopping central strikers, but they have problems stopping smaller players who are much more agile.
Despite the fact Spain improved as time went on, the best goal attempt was in favor of Italy. Insigne received a long pass on the left side of the pitch, he advances a couple of meters and then he gives a good pass to Emerson who attempts a shot with a very narrow angle near the left side of the Spanish penalty box and it hit the post. It was almost a goal and clearly the best goal attempt in the match up to that point but the fact there was almost no angle made this play a low probability one. It isn't impossible to score from that angle but it not only requires good aim by the player doing the shooting but also some luck.
The first half ended with Spain playing better, but with Italy having the best goal attempts. This is the first match where Italy hasn't completely dominated their rival, and I was actually surprised seeing Spain playing very solidly. The match was exciting and even, but the most important thing, the goals, was still absent.
The second match started very intensively. In the first few minutes we have a weak shot by Insigne, a great shot from the border of the penalty box by Busquets, seconds later Italy has a great shot by Chiesa, and everything was as much if not more intense than the first half.
The match entered a phase where pretty much every play ended in the opposite penalty box. Spain attacked and quickly reached the Italian penalty box, and then the opposite happened. Oyarzabal almost scored around the 55-minute mark, but Donnarumma made a good save. A couple of minutes later, around the 60-minute mark, Italy had a nice counterattack that began with their goalkeeper. They just needed 2 passes to reach the Spanish penalty box, Insigne losses the ball when entering the penalty box but Chiesa immediately recovers it and makes a great and unstoppable crossed shot. The goal was spectacular and there was nothing the goalkeeper could do. Chiesa plays for Juventus and is a very energetic player, he is quite fast and with a good acceleration when starting to run. Up to that point, his match wasn't very good but that goal made him one of the most important players of the match.
Spain wasn't properly positioned when that counterattack started, and this is the key aspect that allowed the Italians to score that goal. They were too focused on attacking and left many defensive zones with not enough players covering them.
That goal was an important inflection point in the match. Spain immediately did a substitution, Morata went inside the pitch and Torres went out. On the Italian side, Berardi went in, and Immobile, who had a very crappy match, went out. The attitude of both teams also changed from this moment on.
Spain began to be much more aggressive than before, while the Italians were beginning to focus more on defending their 1 goal advantage than on scoring their second goal. This didn't mean they stopped attacking but the majority of the time it was Spain doing the attacking moves.
After several minutes of Spain intensively attempting to score the goal, there was an amazing move involving both Morata and Olmo around the 80-minute mark. They created a beautiful combination in the border of the Italian penalty box and this left Morata face to face with the goalkeeper and he easily scored. His definition was simple, the hard part was creating the combination that broke the Italian defense and left the Spanish striker with a clear chance to score.
Before that goal, Spain really deserved to tie the match. They were not only better in the first half but also in the second one and having a 1 goal disadvantage seemed unfair. The goal made this match much more excited for the neutral viewer because now the chances of going to the extra time were very high.
The match ended with no many important attempts to score a new goal. I thought Spain was going to be extremely tired in the extra time because they also played extra time in the 2 previous matches, while Italy hasn't played any extra time until this match. This meant the Spanish players had 60 minutes more of accumulated fatigue compared to the Italians. However, Spain continued to dominate the match as they did during the regular 90 minutes, nothing changes in that regard.
It was during the second half of the extra time when Italy finally showed some initiative once again, and they even scored a goal that would end up being disallowed due to an offside. The time continued on and eventually, it was time for the penalty round!
It is important to remember that in their last match, Spain defeated Switzerland on the penalties and it is unlikely for a team to win 2 penalty rounds in a row. I wasn't sure which goalkeeper was better between Unai Simon and Donnarumma but I did notice the Italians looked more comfortable and relaxed.
During the penalty round, the same 2 players that created the play that allowed Spain to tie the match, Olmo and Morata, they both missed their penalties and this allowed Italy to reach the final. Penalties can sometimes feel like a lottery, but doing a good penalty round also requires concentration and strict control of the emotions.
Italy became the winner of the match, just like I thought it would happen, but I didn't expect the match to be dominated by Spain. I think Spain deserved the final a little bit more than Italy but I am happy seeing this team in the final.
What's good for Spain is that they used a lot of young players that have a bright future in their careers, and as they continue to improve, I see Spain being a clear candidate for future tournaments such as the World Cup of the next year. It really surprised me to see Spain giving such a good performance not only in this match but throughout the tournament. The generational change in Spain is finished and they are competitive once again.
What's next?
In a couple of minutes, I will begin to watch the second Copa America semifinal, this one is between Argentina and Colombia, and the winner will play against Brazil in the final this Saturday. I am expecting Argentina to win tonight so I can see a historic final between Brazil vs Argentina, but also, a historic individual duel between Neymar vs Messi.
In the Euro, the next semifinal is tomorrow between England vs Denmark. In that match, I expect England to win so we can watch an exciting final between Italy vs England. These 2 are great teams and I think that match is the best one we can have for the Euro final.
Let me know what do you think of these tournaments so far and thanks for reading!

I was backing Italy but I am heartbroken for Morata. If there is a human being on this planet who needs to catch a break, it is him! He got Spain back into it only to give it away during penalties with a weak shot. Hopefully he doesn't get killed in the press.
Yeah, it was a sad day for him. I am sure he will have better days soon enough, he is young and his best matches are still ahead of him. Let's not forget Olmo also missed his penalty and in a worse way because Olmo didn't even send the ball inside the net xD. At least Morata's penalty went inside but it was stopped.
Really interesting match it was between this Spain and Italy. Italy really did well absorbing all the attacks Spain through at the game. Glad to see them come out on top.
I however feel sad for Spanish forward Morata, giving them hope in the second half only to let them down in the penalties.
For the Copa America, glad eternal rival Argentina and Brazil get to face off in the final after got the job done early this morning. The final will surely be a cracker. Can't wait to see it.
Morata still has a good future. That penalty was horrible but as I mentioned in another comment, at least his penalty went inside the net, Olmo's penalty went out.
I am also happy for finally having Argentina vs Brazil in a Copa America final once again. This duel between Neymar and Messi will be historic.
Yeah of course just hope it doesn't affect his confidence going forward. The Copa America final indeed will be one never to forget.
Spain is one of my favorites to win, it makes me sad when they lost, but am also happy to see Italy winning.
Both teams are good enough to play in the final, this time luck favored Italy but it could have been the other way. The final will be awesome, I have never seen England playing a final before.
