Yesterday I saw the Champions League semifinal between PSG and Manchester City and it was much more entertaining than the previous match between Real Madrid and Chelsea. PSG and City are the 2 clubs that are considered "state clubs". PSG is owned by Qatar and Manchester City is owned by the United Arab Emirates.

Both clubs have invested billions of dollars in building up competitive squads, and so far they have won a lot of national trophies but neither of them has won the Champions League, which is the most important continental competition. It is considered by many that these 2 clubs have almost infinite money, and they can just purchase any player they want because they don't have strict budgets like the normal clubs.

This season started with a lot of doubts for Manchester City, they have been suffering a lot of difficulties scoring goals throughout the season, and the fact their top goalscorer is Gundogan, a midfielder, proves that. It is obvious that the top goal scorer of any team should be a striker, but in the case of City, both Gabriel Jesus and Aguero are suffering from low performance and yesterday neither of them played so it is clear Guardiola prefers to play without strikers. Despite their issues scoring goals, they have managed to dominate the Premier League and they are about to win it again.

PSG, on the other hand, has 2 excellent strikers, Mbappe and Neymar, who are also the main stars of the team. And they also have good substitute strikers such as Icardi and Kean. However, PSG has a weak midfield and their defensive players provide an irregular performance with the exception of Marquinhos. In the league, they are currently in the second position, so they need Lille to lose points if they want to win that tournament. For PSG, not winning the national league nor the champions league would be a tragedy. They need to win at least 1 of those tournaments.

When it comes to the experience, PSG's players reached the Champions League final last year but lost it against Bayern Munich. Not only that but there are also players that have won this tournament such as Di Maria, Keylor Navas, and Neymar. In Manchester City, there aren't Champions League winners and they haven't participated in any final so far. Guardiola is a coach with a lot of experience but the last time he reached the Champions League final was in 2011, 10 years ago. Pochettino, on the other hand, played the final in 2019 but lost it against Liverpool. Guardiola has won many more trophies but right now I think they are both equally good. Besides, this is the first time Pochettino has the opportunity to work with a big club, while Guardiola has been working with big clubs since 2009. All in all, this semifinal is very even.

How was the match?

The match didn't have many goal attempts in the first half although PSG attacked a bit more mainly thanks to Neymar and Di Maria's creativity. The teams were very careful to not concede any mistake in their defensive zone, and Mbappe was very disconnected from his team, he didn't touch many balls thanks to City's great defensive work, He tried some dribblings on the sidelines but always ended up losing the ball. Neymar and Di Maria were much more active and touched many more balls.

In the matches between PSG vs Bayern, I noticed how important Marquinhos was for PSG. With Marquinhos on the pitch, PSG was better than Bayern, and without him, they were on the brink of getting eliminated. Marquinhos isn't only a great defense but he is also a great header, which makes him useful when they obtain a corner kick or free-kick.

PSG wasn't able to create many good attacking plays but they manage to score a goal thanks to Marquinhos. His header after a corner kick was just perfect and there is nothing City's goalkeeper could do. This guy is probably one of the best headers in the world right now. He plays as a central defender but he has scored to both Bayern and City.

The best opportunity for City was in the 41-minute mark after a little mistake in PSG's defense while they were trying to begin a play by doing organized passes. They felt overwhelmed by City's high pressing and conceded a chance.

As mentioned before, City played without a proper striker, so they need to create a lot of combinations to create good goal attempts. Guardiola is an expert in training teams that developed an attacking style that allows them to completely control the ball, and if they are good enough, they don't need strikers to win. This is a difficult feat but there have been cases in the past where successful teams apply this strategy.

The second half started with City keeping the ball on PSG's side of the pitch. However, the most important goal attempt in the first 10 minutes came after a good play from Mbappe on the right side of the penalty box. Verratti almost scores but missed Mbappe's excellent pass. That was the only good play from Mbappe in the entire match. His performance was clearly very disappointing.

De Bruyne attempted a bicycle kick goal at the 60-minute mark but missed it by inches. It would have been the goal of the tournament for sure and it was a signal of what was about to come. Up to this moment, City was playing a bit better but unable to cause that much danger. While PSG depended on Neymar and Di Maria's moves to create attacking plays.

Suddenly, Keylor Navas did what is easily the worst mistake of his career. After De Bruyne crossed the ball into the penalty box, Navas waited for someone to do a header but no one did anything and the ball simply went inside the net. A very silly goal, and surprising to see this happening in a Champions League semifinal, especially to such a good goalkeeper as Keylor Navas. The goal was completely unexpected and it destroyed the confidence in PSG's players. Having confidence is extremely important in these matches and suffering a stupid goal nukes it while at the same time giving the rival a good emotional impulse.

If Keylor Navas' mistake wasn't enough. A few minutes later there is a dangerous free kick in front of PSG's penalty box. The barrier was nicely placed and everything seemed properly covered, but during Mahrez's shot, the barrier suddenly opens and the ball goes through the barrier and ends inside the net. Another silly mistake that is just unjustifiable for players that are considered elite. Letting City score 2 away goals thanks to silly mistakes is absolutely horrible for PSG.

After those silly mistakes, PSG's players started to get super nervous. They began to do a lot of fouls and 2 players received a yellow card, one of them was Neymar who was showing a lot of signs of frustration and anger. As the minutes continued to pass and their frustration continued to grow a red card for PSG finally appeared after Gana Gueye did a horrible foul from behind to a City player. It was a very dangerous tackle and he could have easily injured the other player so it was a fair red card.

After the red card, the match was over for PSG. They were getting out of control and were now vulnerable due to City's 1 man advantage. Everything started to crumble for PSG when Navas did that silly mistake in the first goal.

Now, PSG will need to win the second match and score at least 2 goals. With Neymar and Mbappe, everything is possible but truth be told, in this match, only Neymar was very active. Mbappe looked like a zombie was completely neutralized by City. They severed the always lethal connection between Neymar and Mbappe and Pochettino will have to figure out a good strategy to prevent this from happening in the second match. Whats next?

The second matches of the semifinals are going to be next Tuesday and Wednesday. The favorites right now are Chelsea and Manchester City so we might see a British final if these 2 teams managed to qualify. However, PSG and Real Madrid can still do an epic second match and find their way to the final. I don't plan to watch any other matches for the time being except these 2.

Cheers and thanks for reading!

The mistakes were laughable. You would not expect them in an under 15s match. Whatever about the goalkeeping error, the wall parting like the red sea was inexcusable. And PSG were the better team by far in the first half too. Nicely poised for the 2nd leg in Manchester.

The second match will be exciting. I think Neymar and Mbappe will be in beast mode but Guardiola probably has a strategy to stop them. Chelsea and Madrid's second match is looking good too.
