Real Madrid wins "El Clasico" with a match conditioned by extremely intense rain! (ENG + ESP)

It is always a challenge for this team to compete against Real Madrid and Barcelona because they aren't as big and have a smaller budget which prevents them from hiring the best of the best. However, they have proved time and time again that there is no trophy impossible to win for them. They have several Spanish league titles, the last one was in 2014, and they have reached 2 Champions League finals in this decade, in 2014 and 2016. They lost both finals against Real Madrid but both were very close matches and any team could have won.
There is still a match remaining between Barcelona and Atletico and I am sure Real Madrid's peeps are going to pay a lot of attention to that key date. But back to El Clasico!
Were Real Madrid and Barcelona in good shape before this match?
Before this match, Real Madrid was in third position 2 points below Barcelona. The first Clasico ended with a victory for Real Madrid and it is almost very difficult for either team to win 2 Clasicos in the same season. However, this is exactly what Real Madrid accomplished.
Before this match, Real Madrid achieved an important victory against Liverpool in the Champions League, so I believe the team was not only in very good shape but also in a good psychological state with a lot of confidence in themselves. This is very important because insecure players, even if they are in good shape, can commit silly mistakes that end up costing matches. In the league, Real Madrid has been achieving several victories in a row.
Barcelona, on the other hand, has been dominating all of its previous league matches for several weeks. They were in the third position not too long ago, before this match they were already in the second position and about to take first place from Atletico. They were in good shape for sure, but they sometimes show weaknesses in their defense.
How was the match?
Since the first few minutes, Barcelona quickly took control of the ball. I didn't expect Barcelona to have so much possession but at the end of the match, they had the ball for almost 70% of the match, although I think Real Madrid's early goals might have got something to do with this.
Despite the fact Barcelona had the ball for the majority of the match, Real Madrid was much more efficient with it thanks to the incredible skills of its midfielders who know how to quickly move the ball where it hurts the rival the most.
The 4 Real Madrid midfielders, Modric, Kroos, Valverde, and Casemiro had a great match. Especially Casemiro who is the one in charge of doing the dirty work and commit tactical fouls to stop the rival's attacks. He did a tremendous job annoying Messi all over the pitch.
In the first half Real Madrid was much better thanks to its efficiency. The speed of Vinicius and Valverde was key for both of their goals. The first goal was scored by Benzema with an amazing backheel goal. The play was started by Valverde in the midfield, where thanks to his pure acceleration and speed, was able to break the first defensive line of Barca, pass the ball to Vazquez who then crossed the ball, and Benzema finished with the backheel. This is one of the most beautiful goals in Benzema's career, and easily his most beautiful goal in a Clasico. Valverde's speed was the key for that goal to happen. He destabilized Barca's positions with his great run.
The second goal happened 14 minutes later, in the 28-minute mark, this time it was Vinicius with his super-speed who destabilized Barcelona's defense and the only way to stop him was to commit a foul almost inside the penalty box. The man in charge of the freekick was Kroos and he had a lot of luck with his shot. It touched 2 Barca players before going inside the net. I don't think I have ever seen a freekick touch 2 players before going in but I guess it was Kroos's good luck day. Without doing much, Real Madrid was already with an advantage of 2 goals and feeling completely confident with their plan.
Real Madrid appears to have a curse with its right-back position. The 2 players who are natural right-backs got injured at the same time, which is why Vazquez has been playing in that position, and today, Vazquez got injured as well. Luckily for Madrid, Odriozola, who is one of the natural right-backs, was coming out of his recovery period and was able to play the match. This happened at the end of the first half.
During this time Barcelona approached Real Madrid's penalty box without doing much, not even having good shots. Dembele had the best chance but he missed the ball and wasn't able to do anything else. This will end up changing a lot in the second part of the match.
Heavy rain conditioned the second half
When the second half started, the rain was getting more and more intense, which in my opinion was favorable to Barcelona. My reasoning for this is the following: If a team is losing a match, the team needs urgently for things to change and hope for the change to benefit. The last thing a losing team need is for the match to remain the same. So, the rain changes the circumstances on the pitch, and since Barcelona was the losing team I thought it was beneficial for them. This reasoning ended up being correct because Barcelona had a much better second half and they almost tie the match in the end!
Real Madrid wasn't the same in the second half, I am not sure if they were tired after playing against Liverpool, or if they were thinking about the next match against Liverpool next Wednesday, or what else, but the team wasn't the same as in the first half.
Barcelona did an important change by removing Dest from the field and introducing Griezmann and this certainly helped them a lot. Dest didn't have a good match, he was unable to completely stop Vinicius in the defense, and it was a good substitution.
If Real Madrid was slightly better in the first half, Barcelona was much better in the second one. Although, ironically, Madrid also had a lot of chances to score goals, mainly thanks to several counterattacks. Both teams missed several occasions, the worst fails were from Real Madrid players, especially one failed header from Kroos, one excellent counterattack screwed by a bad pass from Vinicius, and one opportunity from Marcelo where he was face to face against the goalkeeper and Mingueza miraculously moves the ball before Marcelo's shot.
Speaking about Mingueza, he was the best defender of the match and I think the only reason why he isn't the best player of the match is that his team lost. He was able to neutralize Vinicius on almost all occasions, he scored Barcelona's goal, and he was extremely solid in everything he did. Mingueza is quite young but I can notice he is clearly an elite-level defender. The worst misses from Barcelona were from Dembele and Griezmann. Messi had a few free-kick but they weren't very dangerous. In fact, the most dangerous shot from Messi came from the corner kick! He almost scored an Olympic goal in the first half. It would have been historic. I have never watched an Olympic goal in a Clasico match and it hit the post. It was really really close.
The rain continued to fall through the entire second half and most players were kind of uncomfortable with it. Messi even changed his t-shirt for another one that was completely dry. I was expecting tragic mistakes from either team caused by the heavy rain and intense wind but this didn't happen. Most plays had solid responses from both defenses and goalkeepers.
In the end, Real Madrid achieved a very important victory. I think it would be fair to say that Barcelona deserved the tie, but football is like that. Efficiency matters and there is not team more efficient than Real Madrid. They tried time and time again to tie the match in the last few minutes, Casemiro even got a red card stopping them with fouls, they were unable to score the second goal.
Whats next?
The next matches I plan to watch are next Tuesday and Wednesday. PSG vs Bayern and then Real Madrid vs Liverpool. We will soon know which teams are the semifinalists of this season's Champions League. I am quite excited about it.

¿Real Madrid y Barcelona estaban en buena forma antes de este partido?
Antes de este partido, el Real Madrid estaba en la tercera posición 2 puntos por debajo del Barcelona. El primer Clásico terminó con una victoria del Real Madrid y es casi muy difícil que cualquiera de los dos equipos gane 2 Clásicos en la misma temporada. Antes de este partido, el Real Madrid logró una importante victoria ante el Liverpool en la Champions League, por lo que creo que el equipo no solo estaba en muy buena forma sino también en un buen estado psicológico con mucha confianza en sí mismos. El Barcelona, por su parte, lleva varias semanas dominando todos sus partidos de liga anteriores. Estaban en la tercera posición no hace mucho, antes de este partido ya estaban en la segunda posición y a punto de quitarle la primera plaza al Atlético. Seguro que estaban en buena forma, pero a veces muestran debilidades en su defensa.
¿Cómo estuvo el partido?
Desde los primeros minutos, el Barcelona se hizo rápidamente con el control del balón. No esperaba que el Barcelona tuviera tanta posesión, pero al final tuvieron el balón durante casi el 70% del partido, aunque creo que los primeros goles del Real Madrid podrían haber tenido algo que ver con esto.
A pesar de que el Barcelona tenía la pelota la mayor parte del equipo, el Real Madrid fue mucho más eficiente con ella gracias a la increíble habilidad de sus centrocampistas que saben mover rápidamente la pelota donde más duele al rival.
Los 4 centrocampistas del Real Madrid, Modric, Kroos, Valverde y Casemiro hicieron un gran partido. Sobre todo Casemiro que es el encargado de hacer el trabajo sucio y cometer faltas tácticas para frenar los ataques del rival. Hizo un trabajo tremendo molestando a Messi en todo el campo.
En la primera parte el Real Madrid estuvo mucho mejor gracias a su eficiencia. La velocidad de Vinicius y Valverde fue clave para los dos goles. El primer gol lo marcó Benzema con un gran gol de talón. La jugada la inició Valverde en el centro del campo, donde gracias a su pura aceleración y velocidad, supo romper la primera línea defensiva del Barça, pasar el balón a Vázquez que luego cruzó el balón, y Benzema remató con el . Este es uno de los goles más hermosos en la carrera de Benzema, y fácilmente su gol más hermoso en un Clásico. La velocidad de Valverde fue la clave para que se concretara ese gol. Desestabilizó las posiciones del Barça con su gran carrera.
El segundo gol ocurrió 14 minutos después, en el minuto 28, esta vez fue Vinicius con su supervelocidad quien desestabilizó la defensa del Barcelona y la única forma de detenerlo fue cometer una falta casi dentro del área de penalti. El encargado del tiro libre era Kroos y tuvo mucha suerte con su disparo. Tocó a 2 azulgranas antes de entrar en la red. No creo que haya visto a un tiro libre tocar a 2 jugadores antes de entrar, pero supongo que fue un día de buena suerte para Kroos. Sin hacer mucho, el Real Madrid ya estaba con ventaja de 2 goles y se sentía completamente confiado con su plan.
El Real Madrid parece tener una maldición con su posición de lateral derecho. Los 2 jugadores que son laterales derechos naturales se lesionaron al mismo tiempo, por eso Vázquez ha estado jugando en esa posición, y hoy Vázquez también se lesionó. Por suerte para el Madrid, Odriozola, que es uno de los laterales derechos naturales, salía de su período de recuperación y pudo disputar el partido. Esto sucedió al final de la primera mitad.
Durante este tiempo el Barcelona se acercó al área de penaltis del Real Madrid sin hacer mucho, ni siquiera con buenos tiros. Dembélé tuvo la mejor oportunidad, pero falló el balón y no pudo hacer nada más. Esto terminará cambiando mucho en la segunda parte del partido.
Fuertes lluvias condicionaron la segunda mitad
Cuando empezó la segunda parte, la lluvia era cada vez más intensa, lo que en mi opinión era favorable al Barcelona. Mi razonamiento para esto es el siguiente: si un equipo está perdiendo un partido, el equipo necesita urgentemente que las cosas cambien y esperar que el cambio le beneficie. Lo último que necesita un equipo perdedor es que el partido siga igual. Entonces, la lluvia cambia las circunstancias en el campo, y como el Barcelona era el equipo perdedor pensé que era beneficioso para ellos. ¡Este razonamiento terminó siendo correcto porque el Barcelona tuvo una segunda parte mucho mejor y casi empatan el partido al final!
El Real Madrid no fue el mismo en la segunda parte, no estoy seguro si estaban cansados después de jugar contra el Liverpool, o si estaban pensando en el próximo partido contra el Liverpool el próximo miércoles, o qué más, pero el equipo no era el igual que en la primera mitad.
Barcelona hizo un cambio importante al sacar a Dest del campo y meter a Griezmann y esto ciertamente les ayudó mucho. Dest no tuvo un buen partido, no pudo detener por completo a Vinicius en la defensa, y fue una buena sustitución.
Si el Real Madrid fue un poco mejor en la primera parte, el Barcelona fue mucho mejor en la segunda. Aunque, irónicamente, el Madrid también tuvo muchas ocasiones de marcar goles, principalmente gracias a varios contraataques. Ambos equipos fallaron en varias ocasiones, las peores fallas fueron de los jugadores del Real Madrid, sobre todo un cabezazo fallido de Kroos, un excelente contraataque jodido por un mal pase de Vinicius, y una oportunidad de Marcelo donde se encontró cara a cara contra el portero y Mingueza milagrosamente mueve el balón antes del disparo de Marcelo.
Hablando de Mingueza, fue el mejor defensor del partido y creo que la única razón por la que no es el mejor jugador del partido es que su equipo perdió. Supo neutralizar a Vinicius en casi todas las ocasiones, marcó el gol del Barcelona y fue tremendamente sólido en todo lo que hizo. Mingueza es bastante joven, pero puedo notar que claramente es un defensor de élite. Las peores faltas del Barcelona fueron las de Dembélé y Griezmann. Messi tuvo algunos tiros libres pero no fueron muy peligrosos. De hecho, ¡el disparo más peligroso de Messi llegó desde el saque de esquina! Casi marca un gol olímpico en la primera mitad. Habría sido histórico. Nunca he visto un gol olímpico en un partido de Clásico y pegó en el poste. Estuvo realmente muy cerca.
La lluvia continuó cayendo durante toda la segunda mitad y la mayoría de los jugadores se sintieron un poco incómodos con ella. Messi incluso cambió su camiseta por otra que estaba completamente seca. Esperaba errores trágicos de cualquiera de los equipos causados por la lluvia intensa y el viento intenso, pero esto no sucedió. Al final, el Real Madrid logró una victoria muy importante. Creo que sería justo decir que el Barcelona se merecía el empate, pero el fútbol es así. La eficiencia importa y no hay equipo más eficiente que el Real Madrid. Intentaron una y otra vez empatar el partido en los últimos minutos, Casemiro incluso recibió una tarjeta roja deteniéndolos con faltas, pero no pudieron marcar el segundo gol.
¿Qué sigue?
Los próximos partidos que planeo ver son el próximo martes y miércoles. PSG vs Bayern y luego Real Madrid vs Liverpool. Pronto sabremos qué equipos son los semifinalistas de la Champions League de esta temporada y estoy bastante emocionado por eso.
