Spain has only played against 1 competitive team so far, Croatia, and they were only able to defeat them in the extra time. During the group stage, Spain had a poor performance in the first 2 matches, and then in the third one against Slovakia, a very weak team, they unleashed their attacking capabilities and scored 5 goals.
Spain's performance hasn't been very convincing so far, but since they are one of the few remaining teams with a lot of world-class players, they do have some good chances of reaching the final and win it.
The Swiss players already feel like champions for having defeated France and reached the quarter-finals. This is a historic achievement for them, and whatever happens in this match, they will be happy with their overall performance.
Before the match, I expected Spain to do what they usually do. Control the ball, pass it around making use of their good technical skills, and slowly open up spaces in the Swiss defense to do some good movements and score their goals. I didn't expect Spain to have many attempts using corner kicks or free kicks, my expectation was for them to attempt regular moves and score after a well-designed play.
I didn't expect the Spanish players to underestimate the Swiss players due to their victory against France. So I expected the Spanish team to remain extremely focused throughout the entire match.
How was the match?
The match started with an early shot from Shaqiri, who is the best Swiss player in my opinion. However, the match was quickly under the control of Spain. The Swiss players had a nice counterattack that was stopped at the border of the Spanish penalty box, and seconds later came the Spanish goal.
The first goal happened by chance around the 7-minute mark. Spain obtained a corner kick, and instead of crossing the ball into the penalty dot, they crossed it to the border of the penalty area. The ball went over the Spanish player that was expecting this pass and arrived where Alba was positioned. This part of the play was all by chance but what came after was just pure good luck for Alba. As soon as he gets the ball, he shoots it, and then it is deflected on a Swiss defensive player that was trying to stop the shot, and it went inside the net. It was a very lucky goal for Alba and surely a very frustrating play for the Swiss team.
This goal allowed the Spanish team to play in a very relaxed manner without too much stress. Their pressure was off, and it was now the Swiss team that had the obligation to take the initiative and attempt to score the tie. When players take the pressure out of their chest, they usually feel free enough to let their creativity go, and sometimes this allows them to score even more goals and increase their advantage. If they get too comfortable and lose focus though, they might lose their advantage, this is what happened to France when they played against Switzerland.
After the goal, the match was surprisingly even between the 2 teams. Spain was better passing the ball around, but Switzerland had some nice approaches to the Spanish penalty box as well. They only needed a little bit of luck, like the one they had against France, and they could tie the match in one of their attempts. Spain was better, but Switzerland was a worthy rival. In fact, I thought they were going to score around the 40-minute mark, but the player was offside and the potential penalty he suffered wasn't valid. This play proved Switzerland was very well capable of tying the match at any moment, despite the fact Spain was the better team.
The second half was just like the first one. Switzerland was able to attempt a few attacking plays, while Spain was the one doing more passes and keeping the ball as much as possible. For Spain, being in control of the ball is their best defense.
The fact Switzerland was resisting any Spanish attempt to score a second goal and that the Swiss players were constantly approaching the Spanish area, made it clear for any viewer there was a slight chance of the Swiss team tying the match.
This ended up happening at around the 68-minute mark. Just like Spain, Switzerland also had good luck in the play that allowed them to score. It began with a long cross that ended in Freuler's legs by mere chance, and then he simply passes the ball to Shaqiri who easily scores the goal. The Spanish goalkeeper had no way to stop this shot.
A few minutes later, something happened that conditioned the remaining minutes. There was a foul committed by the Swiss player Freuler near the center midfield line, and the referee went directly to show him the red card. It wasn't even a second yellow card but a straight red one.
The foul didn't seem so dangerous in my opinion, but the referee was very decided and sent the player out. Now, Switzerland was with 10 players and this was obviously a big advantage to Spain. The chances of the Swiss team resisting the tie with a 1 player disadvantage seemed very low from that moment on.
That red card also stopped the emotional momentum favoring Switzerland after their lucky goal. Now, the emotional momentum was more in favor of Spain, and only due to a silly foul in a neutral area of the pitch.
The Swiss squad doesn't stop surprising though, and during the remaining of the regular 90 minutes, they resisted any attempt of attack from Spain and were able to finish the 90 minutes with a very heroic tie. I am sure that going to the extra time, once again, against a major team in a big tournament felt like a victory for the Swiss players.
Spain never stopped being in control of the possession, but the quality of their attacking attempts started to felt uninspired. Even after they did substitutions nothing changed. Something is missing in this team, maybe it is the lack of a world-class striker.
In the extra time, Switzerland had a hard time keeping up with their attacking attempts. The 1 player disadvantage was noticeable, and they mainly focused on defending, resisting, and waiting for the minutes to keep advancing with the hopes of deciding the winner with a penalty round, which is what happened with their match against France.
Spain had several opportunities to score their second goal, but all of them were ineffective.
In the 20 minute mark of the extra time, Spain had their best opportunity after Alba crossed the ball into the penalty box directly to where Llorente was waiting, he immediately shots, but there was a Swiss defensive player right in front of him and stops the ball. Spain was creating a lot of good plays from their left side thanks to Alba passes and Pedri moves that opened a lot of spaces in that area. Despite their many attempts, there were still unable to score their second goal.
The Swiss goalkeeper had a lot of saves to do and each time he did his job correctly and saved his team. It is also true that most of the Spanish shots went directly to where the Swiss goalkeeper was standing, but having to catch so many shots is a lot of effort so kudos to the goalkeeper.
During the extra time all Switzerland do was resist and wait, and fortunately for them, they managed to reach the penalty round against a major team once again!
Just like reaching the extra time against Spain must have felt like a victory, reaching the penalty round was probably even better because now they had like a 50% chance of continuing to the semifinals. During the extra time, Spain had more chances because they have better players and they had the 1 player advantage, but during the penalty round, it is all 50-50, which is great for the Swiss.
I have always loved penalty rounds, when I was a little boy, they were my favorite things about football. Nowadays, I still enjoy them but only if I am neutral about the teams. If I support one team and there is a penalty round, then I can get quite tense. In this match, I was neutral about Spain or Switzerland so I had a great time watching those penalties :P
I don't know what happened to the Swiss players in this penalty round, against France they scored all of their goals, but this time they missed 3 of the 4 penalties they shot, all of the misses were in a row. Spain defeated them thanks to 2 heroic saves.
In the end, the better team won, but the winner could have easily been Switzerland. I still think those players are probably happy, they won 1 penalty round against France and lost another one against Spain, it is not a bad performance.
What's next?
I am beginning to watch Belgium vs Italy match while I am finishing this post. Later today, I plan to watch Brazil vs Chile in what's the best match Copa America has to offer right now. I haven't watched many Copa America matches but we have finally reached the quarter-finals and things are getting excited.
Tomorrow, there is England vs Ukraine, I am thinking about watching that match but I am not entirely sure yet.
España solo ha jugado contra 1 equipo competitivo hasta ahora, Croacia, y solo pudo derrotarlos en la prórroga. Durante la fase de grupos, España tuvo una mala actuación en los 2 primeros partidos, y luego en el tercero ante Eslovaquia, un equipo muy débil, desató su capacidad de ataque y marcó 5 goles.
La actuación de España no ha sido muy convincente hasta ahora, pero como es uno de los pocos equipos que quedan con muchos jugadores de talla mundial, tiene buenas posibilidades de llegar a la final y ganarla.
Los jugadores suizos ya se sienten campeones por haber derrotado a Francia y haber llegado a cuartos de final. Este es un logro histórico para ellos, y pase lo que pase en este partido, estarán felices con su desempeño general.
Antes del partido, esperaba que España hiciera lo que suele hacer. Controlar el balón, pasarlo haciendo uso de sus buenas habilidades técnicas y poco a poco abrir espacios en la defensa suiza para hacer buenos movimientos y marcar sus goles. No esperaba que España hiciera muchos intentos con tiros de esquina o tiros libres, mi expectativa era que intentaran movimientos regulares y anotaran después de una jugada bien diseñada.
No esperaba que los jugadores españoles subestimaran a los jugadores suizos debido a su victoria contra Francia. Así que esperaba que la selección española se mantuviera extremadamente concentrada durante todo el partido.
¿Cómo estuvo el partido?
El partido comenzó con un disparo temprano de Shaqiri, que es el mejor jugador suizo en mi opinión. Sin embargo, el partido quedó rápidamente bajo el control de España. Los suizos tuvieron un buen contraataque que se detuvo en el borde del área de España, y segundos después llegó el gol español.
El primer gol ocurrió por casualidad alrededor del minuto 7. España consiguió un tiro de esquina, y en lugar de cruzar el balón al punto de penalti, lo cruzó hasta el borde del área penal. El balón pasó por encima del jugador español que esperaba este pase y llegó donde estaba Alba. Esta parte de la jugada fue todo por casualidad, pero lo que vino después fue pura suerte para Alba. Tan pronto como recibe el balón, lo dispara, y luego es desviado por un jugador defensivo suizo que intentaba detener el tiro, y se fue dentro de la red. Fue un gol de mucha suerte para Alba y seguramente una jugada muy frustrante para la selección suiza.
Este gol permitió a la selección española jugar de forma muy relajada y sin demasiado estrés. Seguro que su presión interna ya no era la misma, y ahora era el equipo suizo el que tenía la obligación de tomar la iniciativa e intentar marcar el empate. Cuando los jugadores se quitan la presión del pecho, generalmente se sienten lo suficientemente libres como para dejar ir su creatividad y, a veces, esto les permite marcar aún más goles y aumentar su ventaja. Sin embargo, si se sienten demasiado cómodos y pierden la concentración, podrían perder su ventaja, esto es lo que le sucedió a Francia cuando jugó contra Suiza.
Después del gol, el partido fue sorprendentemente parejo entre los 2 equipos. España fue mejor pasando el balón, pero Suiza también tuvo algunos acercamientos interesantes al área española. Solo necesitaban un poco de suerte, como la que tuvieron ante Francia, y así empatar el partido en uno de sus intentos. España era mejor, pero Suiza era un rival digno. De hecho, pensé que iban a marcar alrededor de los 40 minutos, pero el jugador estaba fuera de juego y el possible penalty que sufrió no fue válido. Esta jugada demostró que Suiza era muy capaz de empatar el partido en cualquier momento, a pesar de que España era el mejor equipo.
La segunda mitad fue como la primera. Suiza fue capaz de intentar algunas jugadas de ataque, mientras que España fue la que hizo más pases y mantuvo el balón en la medida de lo posible. Para España, tener el control del balón es su mejor defensa.
El hecho de que Suiza se resistiera a cualquier intento español de marcar un segundo gol y que los jugadores suizos se acercaran constantemente al área española, dejaba claro para cualquier espectador que había una pequeña posibilidad de que la selección suiza empatara el partido.
Esto terminó sucediendo alrededor de los 68 minutos. Al igual que España, Suiza también tuvo buena suerte en la jugada que le permitió marcar. Comenzó con un centro largo que terminó en las piernas de Freuler por mera casualidad, y luego simplemente pasa el balón a Shaqiri, quien fácilmente marca el gol. El portero español no tuvo forma de detener este disparo.
Unos minutos después, sucedió algo que condicionó los minutos restantes. Hubo una falta cometida por el jugador suizo Freuler cerca de la línea del medio campo, y el árbitro fue directamente a mostrarle la tarjeta roja. Ni siquiera fue una segunda tarjeta amarilla, sino una roja directa.
La falta no me pareció tan peligrosa en mi opinión, pero el árbitro estuvo muy decidido y expulsó al jugador. Ahora, Suiza estaba con 10 jugadores y obviamente esto fue una gran ventaja para España. Las posibilidades de que el equipo suizo resistiera el empate con una desventaja de 1 jugador parecían muy bajas a partir de ese momento.
Esa tarjeta roja también frenó el impulso emocional que favorecía a Suiza tras su gol de suerte. Ahora, el impulso emocional fue más a favor de España, y solo por una falta tonta en una zona neutra del campo.
Sin embargo, la escuadra suiza no deja de sorprender, y durante el resto de los 90 minutos regulares resistieron cualquier intento de ataque de España y pudieron terminar los 90 minutos con un empate muy heroico. Estoy seguro de que ir a la prórroga, una vez más, contra un equipo importante en un gran torneo fue una victoria para los jugadores suizos.
España nunca dejó de tener el control de la posesión, pero la calidad de sus intentos de ataque comenzó a parecer poco inspirada. Incluso después de que hicieron sustituciones, nada cambió. Algo falta en este equipo, quizás sea la falta de un delantero de talla mundial.
En la prórroga, Suiza tuvo dificultades para seguir el ritmo de sus intentos de ataque. Se notaba la desventaja de 1 jugador, así que se centraron principalmente en defender, resistir y esperar los minutos para seguir avanzando con la esperanza de decidir el ganador con una ronda de penaltis, que es lo que sucedió con su partido ante Francia.
España tuvo varias oportunidades para marcar su segundo gol, pero todas fueron ineficaces.
En el minuto 20 de la prórroga, España tuvo su mejor oportunidad después de que Alba cruzara el balón al área de penalti directamente a donde Llorente estaba esperando, y él inmediatamente disparó, pero había un defensor suizo justo delante de él y detuvo el tiro. España estaba creando muchas buenas jugadas desde su lado izquierdo gracias a los pases de Alba y las jugadas de Pedri que abrieron muchos espacios en esa área. A pesar de sus muchos intentos, aún así no pudieron marcar su segundo gol.
El portero suizo tenían muchas paradas por hacer, hizo bien su trabajo y salvó a su equipo. También es cierto que la mayoría de los tiros españoles iban directamente a donde estaba parado el portero suizo, pero tener que atrapar tantos tiros es mucho esfuerzo, así que felicitaciones al portero.
Durante la prórroga todo lo que hizo Suiza fue resistir y esperar, y afortunadamente para ellos, ¡lograron llegar a la ronda de penaltis contra un equipo importante una vez más!
Al igual que llegar a la prórroga contra España debió sentirse como una victoria, llegar a la ronda de penales probablemente fue incluso mejor porque ahora tenían como un 50% de posibilidades de continuar hasta las semifinales. Durante la prórroga, España tuvo más oportunidades porque tiene mejores jugadores y tenía la ventaja de 1 jugador más, pero durante la ronda de penales, todo es 50-50, lo que es genial para los suizos.
Siempre me han gustado las rondas de penales, cuando era pequeño, eran de mis cosas favoritas del fútbol. Hoy en día, todavía los disfruto, pero solo si soy neutral con respecto a los equipos. Si apoyo a un equipo y hay una ronda de penaltis, entonces puedo ponerme bastante tenso. En este partido, fui neutral con respecto a España o Suiza, así que me lo pasé muy bien viendo esos penaltis: P
No sé qué pasó con los jugadores suizos en esta ronda de penaltis, contra Francia anotaron todos sus goles, pero esta vez fallaron 3 de los 4 penaltis que lanzaron, todos los fallos fueron seguidos. España los derrotó gracias a 2 paradas heroicas.
Al final, ganó el mejor equipo, pero el ganador podría haber sido fácilmente Suiza. Sigo pensando que esos jugadores probablemente estén contentos, ganaron 1 ronda de penaltis contra Francia y perdieron otra contra España, no es una mala actuación.
¿Qué sigue?
Estoy empezando a ver el partido Bélgica vs Italia mientras termino esta publicación. Más tarde hoy, planeo ver Brasil vs Chile en el que es el mejor partido que la Copa América tiene para ofrecer en este momento. No he visto muchos partidos de la Copa América, pero finalmente hemos llegado a cuartos de final y las cosas se están poniendo emocionantes.
Mañana tenemos a Inglaterra vs Ucrania, estoy pensando en ver ese partido, pero todavía no estoy del todo seguro.

WOw, that match between Brazil and Chile sounds interesting, but I will have to go to bed instead, unfortunately! I watched most of the match between Spain and Switzerland, and I do believe the best team won, but somehow, Spain didn't impress much today either. Switzerland did a decent job, but the red card kind of destroyed it all for them.
But, watching the match between Italy and Belgium now, I would say that both Italy and Belgium should beat Spain in the semi-final :)
I also think Italy is the favorite against Spain. Italy has been super solid and I even see them as the favorite to win the tournament right now.

Es increíblemente loco, lo que fue este partido de verdad, no me explico lo que esta pasando en esta Euro2020, como España pudo ser la primera finalista sin anotar un gol en este partido? solo lo que hizo fue anotar tres penaltis y listo, finalista xd. Sí, ahorita estoy escribiendo sobre el Bélgica Italia, estuvo bueno ese partido también. También veo a Italia como favorita, están bastante solidos y marcando bastantes goles. Espero que la final pueda ser Italia Inglaterra, me parece que son los 2 mejores equipos que quedan en el torneo. El España Italia será una buena oportunidad de revancha para los italianos.
En un par de horas tenemos el Brasil Chile, espero que no se vaya la luz para poder verlo hahahaha.

A very good on for the Spanish team and they have done well to have gotten to this level, even to me they gave not really win the way I particularly expect them to win matches but they have been getting the job done one way or the other, good one for them
The match against Italy will really show if Spain is a solid team, or if their weaknesses are real and profound.
They began the tournament with a weak performance but there were 2 matches when they scored a lot of goals. They are very irregular though, that's for sure.
Quite a match it was between Spain and Switzerland. Well deserved win for Spain. I however give Kudos to the swiss team for enduring most part of the game after been one man down.
I Guess the weariness and tiredness Spain inflicted on them by making them defend all through affect their legs at penalty shootout as they were very poor in that part on the night.
Can't wait for the Spain v Italy game. Will really seeing if Spain are really solid and if Italy can get their revenge from Spain after been thrashed in the euro 2012 final. One thing is for sure, we will be seeing an exciting encounter between this two come Tuesday.

Yeah, maybe the Swiss players were very tired and that's why their penalties were so bad. That match from 2012 was complete destruction for Italy, 4 goals in a final is not normal. I am sure they want some good revenge and right now, I think they have a good enough team to do it.
