The best match of the tournament so far and Spain defeats Croatia 5-3 in the extra time (ENG + ESP)

In the past couple of years, Spain's performance wasn't the same and they have been going through a generational change. A lot of players present in the team are young and with not much experience playing for the national team. I consider these generational changes are good and necessary. They can be difficult in the beginning but with enough time these changes are positive.
How was the match?
Spain began the match controlling the ball which was not a surprise because this is typical of Spanish players. They like to have the ball and pass it around looking for open spaces in the defense.
Around the 15 minute mark, Koke received a great pass that left him alone in front of the Croatian goalkeeper but his shot wasn't good and was easily stopped. This was a very important goal attempt and it should have been a goal.
Spain was playing better than Croatia during those minutes until something absolutely crazy happened around the 21-minute mark. Spain's goalkeeper Unai Simon receives a normal pass from one of his teammates, but when he receives the ball, he miss touched it and he sent the ball inside his own net by accident. This is the worst own goal I have seen in many months and even years, the fact it happened in a very important match between 2 good teams makes it even more shocking.
And just like that, Croatia took the lead without doing much during the match up to that point. They had a couple of good minutes after the goal probably due to the emotional impulse of suddenly having a 1 goal advantage gifted by the rival, but soon enough Spain took the initiative and the control of the match once again.
Croatia had problems leaving their own side of the pitch because Spain was getting more and more intense attempting their attacking plays. They did a lot of crosses into the area and shots until finally, around the 38-minute mark, they were able to score their first goal in a very messy play that finished with a shot being stopped by the goalkeeper, and then the bounce reached the Spanish player Sarabia free without any defender near him and easily scored the goal from near the penalty dot.
Spain really deserved to at least tie the match. They had the initiative since the beginning, and Croatia didn't do anything to deserve the advantage.
The second half of the match started in the same way as the first one ended. Spain was the only active team and the one who still kept trying to do something useful with the ball. Around the 57 minute mark, after a good while with Spain dominating the match, the second Spanish goal was scored by Azpilicueta with a good header. The ball was crossed into the penalty box, and the only Spanish players inside were Morata, who was properly covered by a defensive player, and Azpilicueta, who had a defensive player near him but he wasn't very attentive.
Azpilicueta isn't really an attacking player, he plays as a right-back and he hasn't scored many headers in his career. But this was his lucky day, and even though he isn't very tall, he was able to score the header and give his team the 1 goal advantage.
After Spain's second goal, Croatia took the initiative for the first time during the match. They had a few attacking plays that finished with good shots and were really trying to tie this match but with no success so far.
After the match was stopped and a few substitutions were made, Spain did a very quick play that began with a long pass to Torres, who was all alone on the right side of the pitch. Once he received the ball he ran straight towards Croatia's penalty box, he dribbles the only defender near him and suddenly finds himself face to face against the goalkeeper. He did a normal shot and it went inside the net.
I wasn't expecting this goal, and I believe neither of the teams were expecting it. We now had Spain with a comfortable advantage of 2 goals, and Croatia more desperate than ever. It must have been hard for Croatia to receive another goal when they were trying to tie such a difficult match.
However, they didn't surrender and they kept creating new attacking plays. Towards the end of the match, they finally received their rewards. Their second goal came around the 85-minute mark and it was a messy goal. The ball bounces several times inside Spain's penalty box, and it was thanks to technology that the referee was able to confirm the goal. The ball has a chip and it sends a signal to the referee when it crosses the line, and it was that signal that confirmed the goal. The key movement of that goal was from Modric when he got inside Spain's penalty box, what came after that movement was a series of shots and bounces until it crossed the line and the goal was given.
Losing 3-2 was a respectable result for Croatia, especially given the fact that during the first half they didn't do anything positive. However, they kept attacking looking to tie the match and they heroically did it around the 92-minute mark. This goal was a good header, similar to the one scored by Azpilicueta early on, and resulted in a huge emotional boost for all the Croatian players. They managed to tie the match almost in the last minute and were now forcing the extra time.
Spain, on the other hand, was extremely frustrated seeing how their 2 goal advantage evaporated in a matter of minutes. I wasn't sure how hard the emotional impact was going to be for Spain, but things were looking very awful for them and very positive for Croatia.
When the extra time started, Croatia took the initiative in the first few minutes, which wasn't a surprise since they had the emotional boost of scoring in the 92-minute mark, and they almost scored their fourth goal but it was miraculously saved by the Spanish goalkeeper. Eventually, the Croatian momentum faded and the match got very even once again.
In one of the many crosses into the Croatian penalty box, the ball finally reaches Morata without a nearby defender to stop him, he controls the ball and shots it straight inside the net. It was a terrific goal by the Spanish striker and gave Spain a well-deserved 1 goal advantage once again.
This goal must have been a strong emotional and psychological hit for Croatia because only a few minutes later, they scored their fifth goal with another quick attacking play that began on their right side of the pitch, and finished with a cross into the penalty box that left Oyarzabal in front of the goalkeeper and with enough space to do a good definition. In 3 minutes Spain had scored 2 goals to secure once again their victory.
During the second half of the extra time, it was noticeable the players were all very tired. The pace wasn't the same and Croatia was unable to do the same they did in the second half of the regular time.
Spain's superior technique became very clear, and in the last minute they almost scored their fifth goal but it hit the post. This was a well-deserved victory for Spain and in my opinion, they even deserved to win in the first 90 minutes with no extra time.
This was the best match of the tournament so far, with a lot of goals and intense moments, and in the end, the victory was for Spain was fair. Croatia did an acceptable match, with a terrific second half but ultimately, they weren't able to keep up with Spain.
Whats next?
The next match I plan to watch is tomorrow. Germany vs England looks like a promising match and probably the one with the best teams in the current round of 16. It is very hard for me to decide which teams have the most chances of winning, but right now, I would say England although I expect a very even match.

Azpilicueta no es realmente un jugador de ataque, juega de lateral derecho y no ha marcado muchos cabezazos en su carrera. Pero este fue su día de suerte, y aunque no es muy alto, pudo marcar de cabeza y darle a su equipo la ventaja de 1 gol.
Tras el segundo gol de España, Croacia tomó la iniciativa por primera vez durante el partido. Tuvieron algunas jugadas de ataque que terminaron con buenos tiros y realmente estaban tratando de empatar este partido pero sin éxito hasta ahora.
Tras haber parado el partido y hacer algunas sustituciones, España hizo una jugada muy rápida que empezó con un pase largo a Torres, que estaba solo en el lado derecho del campo. Una vez que recibió el balón corrió directamente hacia el área de penalti de Croacia, regateó al único defensor cerca de él y de repente se encuentra cara a cara con el portero. Hizo un tiro normal y se metió dentro de la red.
No esperaba este gol, y creo que ninguno de los equipos lo esperaba. Ahora teníamos a España con una cómoda ventaja de 2 goles y Croacia más desesperada que nunca. Debe haber sido difícil para Croacia recibir otro gol cuando intentaba empatar un partido tan difícil.
Sin embargo, no se rindieron y siguieron creando nuevas jugadas de ataque. Hacia el final del partido, finalmente recibieron sus recompensas. Su segundo gol llegó alrededor de los 85 minutos y fue un gol complicado. El balón rebota varias veces dentro del área de penalti de España, y fue gracias a la tecnología que el árbitro pudo confirmar el gol. Perder 3-2 era un resultado respetable para Croacia, sobre todo teniendo en cuenta que durante la primera parte no hicieron nada positivo. Sin embargo, siguieron atacando buscando empatar el partido y lo hicieron heroicamente alrededor de los 92 minutos. Este gol fue un buen cabezazo, similar al que anotó Azpilicueta al principio, y supuso un gran impulso emocional para todos los jugadores croatas. Lograron empatar el partido casi en el último minuto y ahora forzaban la prórroga.
España, por otro lado, estaba extremadamente frustrada al ver cómo su ventaja de 2 goles se evaporó en cuestión de minutos. No estaba seguro de lo duro que iba a ser el impacto emocional para España, pero las cosas se veían muy mal para ellos y muy positivas para Croacia.
Cuando comenzó la prórroga, Croacia tomó la iniciativa en los primeros minutos, lo que no fue una sorpresa ya que tuvieron el impulso emocional de marcar en el minuto 92, y casi anotaron su cuarto gol, pero fue detenido milagrosamente por el portero español. Finalmente, el impulso croata se desvaneció y el partido se volvió muy igualado una vez más.
En uno de los muchos centros al área de penalti croata, el balón finalmente llega a Morata sin un defensor cercano que lo detenga, este controla el balón y lo lanza directamente dentro de la red. Fue un gol tremendo del delantero español y volvió a dar a España una merecida ventaja de 1 gol.
Este gol debió haber sido un fuerte golpe emocional y psicológico para Croacia porque solo unos minutos después, España anotó su quinto gol con otra rápida jugada de ataque que comenzó por su lado derecho del campo y terminó con un centro al área de penalti que dejó a Oyarzabal delante del portero y con suficiente espacio para hacer una buena definición. En 3 minutos España había marcado 2 goles para asegurar una vez más su victoria.
Durante la segunda mitad de la prórroga, se notó que todos los jugadores estaban muy cansados. El ritmo no fue el mismo y Croacia no pudo hacer lo mismo que hizo en la segunda mitad del tiempo reglamentario.
La técnica superior de España quedó muy clara, y en el último minuto estuvo a punto de marcar su quinto gol, pero pegó en el poste. Esta fue una victoria bien merecida para España y en mi opinión, incluso merecieron ganar en los primeros 90 minutos sin prórroga.
Este fue el mejor partido del torneo hasta el momento, con muchos goles y momentos intensos, y al final, la victoria para España fue justa. Croacia hizo un partido aceptable, con una segunda mitad estupenda, pero al final, no pudo seguir el ritmo de España.
¿Qué sigue?
El próximo partido que planeo ver es mañana. Alemania vs Inglaterra parece un partido prometedor y probablemente el que tiene los mejores equipos en la ronda actual de octavos de final. Es muy difícil para mí decidir cualde los 2 tiene más posibilidades de ganar, pero en este momento, diría Inglaterra, aunque espero un partido muy parejo.
Sin duda alguna un partido de toma y dame, pero en si fue un partido de loco al igual que el de Francia-Suiza, es muy genial o "loco" lo que esta pasando en esta Euro2020, me gusta mucho como va y como veo a los equipos en los próximos partidos. Realmente me esta gustando este torneo.
Sí, ya están empezando a aparecer las sorpresas, y los partidos de hoy estuvieron mejor imposible. Muy buen torneo hasta ahora.
Todavía falta mucho de la Euro2020 y nos tiene muchas cosas guardadas, falta cuarto de finales, semifinales y la gran final, así que bueno, muchos partidos faltan por ver.
Así es, y bueno también tenemos la Copa America que ya se va a poner buena también :D
El mejor año del fútbol? creo que si, todo esta siendo realmente increíble con él.
Lo cierto es que es inedito tener a la Eurocopa y Copa America el mismo año. Casi casi como un Mundial haha
