They won the last World Cup and they reached the final of the Euro 2016 and only lost it due to bad luck. For me, this team was clearly the best. However, despite the fact they finished in the first position on the group stage, I wasn't convinced with their performance so far.
They only managed to beat Germany and this was with an own goal by Hummels, and in that match, Germany played a bit better. I wasn't seeing France as dominant as I expected and this made me doubt their future in the tournament. However, seeing the other teams, I still concluded France was the best one with Italy in a close second spot.
Switzerland has never been a very good football team but they are consistent enough to qualify for the major tournaments. I thought Switzerland was no match for France, but if France was out of focus they could easily suffer more than expected against the Swiss players. I never thought this match could end up being the first major surprise in the tournament.
How was the match
I was surprised to see the match with a very even start between the 2 teams. France was a bit better but Switzerland was good enough to also have their attacking plays and to properly neutralize any attacking play from France. There were a few corner kicks for both teams during the first 10 minutes and once again, I didn't see France dominating when they should have. The match had a very intense pace during the first 10-15 minutes.
France seemed to be gaining confidence and I thought their first goal was just a matter of minutes but to my surprise and probably to the surprise of all the people watching this match, Switzerland suddenly scored with a header after a good cross into the area from their left side. This happened around the 15-minute mark, the goal was very good, and it was almost incredible for me to watch France losing the match against such a rival.
There is no comparison between the French and the Swiss players, but here we were, with Switzerland having a 1 goal advantage over France and defending it properly. The first major surprise of the tournament was just beginning.
I noticed Mbappe playing too individualistic. He hasn't scored so far in the tournament, and I think he is really in need to score at least 1 goal. The other 2 main French attacking players, Griezmann and Benzema, have scored goals, so Mbappe is the only one with 0 goals so far and this is probably affecting his confidence and performance. The worse for him was yet to come later on in this match.
After the goal, France took the initiative and attempted several times to tie the match with no luck. Switzerland was surprisingly defending very well, and the French players were unable to score their well-needed goal. Minutes went by and the first half of the match reached its end.
At the beginning of the second half, there was a great attacking play from Switzerland, where one of their players outran the French defender and received a foul at the border of the area. It wasn't clear if this was a foul or not, so the match continued, and seconds later Mbappe suffered what appeared to be a foul inside the area. So we suddenly had 2 potential penalties being reviewed by VAR. After a few seconds, the penalty in favor of Switzerland was confirmed and the match entered its most important moment.
Now we had Switzerland, a very small country with no world-class players having the opportunity to achieve a 2 goal advantage over France, the favorite to win the tournament in my opinion. They only had to score a penalty, and that would be it. Unluckily for the Swiss players, the penalty was heroically stopped by the French goalkeeper and the French players entered into extasis. They knew they had the emotional momentum in their favor and it was now the moment to tie the match.
That was exactly what happened a few minutes later, around the 56 minutes mark. France was playing with 4 attacking players, Benzema, Mbappe, Griezmann, and Coman. In one of their many attacking plays, Benzema receives a good pass from Mbappe around the border of the penalty box, he then makes a beautiful first touch with the ball and finds himself face to face against the goalkeeper. He finishes the play with a soft touch that crosses the ball and goes inside the net. This was really a world-class movement by Benzema, and for people that know the playstyle of this striker, it should be no surprise to see once again how capable he is of doing this type of beautiful plays.
This goal was a huge emotional blown for Switzerland. They went from a potential 2-0, missed the penalty, and minutes later they were now 1-1. If that wasn't tragic enough for the Swiss players, a couple of minutes after the first goal by Benzema, came the second one.
Griezmann did a great combination with Mbappe that allowed him to reach the end line with enough angle to attempt a shot, it gets stopped by the goalkeeper but the bounce ends in Benzema's head, who then scores easily in front of the empty net. This second goal was mostly due to good luck from Benzema, but the movement by Griezmann and the combination with Mbappe were great.
In less than 5 minutes the match went from a penalty in favor of Switzerland that would have given them a 2 goal advantage, to a sudden 1 goal advantage in favor of France. That's how crazy football can be when the matches are intense enough.
After France obtained its 1 goal advantage, they became much more relaxed and confident in themselves. They were comfortable with the result, and now they only needed for the clock to keep ticking away so they could achieve this important victory. In the meantime, Switzerland was very confused. The 2 consecutive blows by Benzema were clearly affecting them.
After some minutes Switzerland regained its composure, and things were getting very even once again. That was the case until the 74-minute mark. Pogba scored what I believe is the best goal of the tournament so far. He receives the ball outside the penalty box and he has no Swiss player near him, so he had the time and the space to accommodate his body and attempt a very ambitious shot, and luckily for him, it became a goal. The shot was spectacular, and there were no chances of any goalkeeper stopping that shot from going inside the net.
I thought that goal has sealed the victory for France, and that the next minutes were going to be of lesser importance, but that wasn't what ended up happening. Just as in the match between Croatia and Spain, the final minutes of this match were crazy and equally exciting too. First, the Swiss players began to dream around the 80-minute mark when they scored their second goal thanks to a great header Seferovic, he was the same player who scored the first Swiss goal.
There were more than 10 minutes left to play, and 1 goal can be scored at any time so the Swiss players knew they had a chance of at least forcing the extra time. The French players got tenser as their victory didn't seem as secure now, but I honestly think they underestimated the Swiss players.
The heroic tie came around the 89-minute mark, Gavranovic receives a good pass in the middle of a counterattack, dribbles Varane, and makes a good shot from the central border of the penalty box, and it goes inside. It was a good play and a good shot that the French goalkeeper was unable to stop. Minutes before this tie the same player scored another goal but it was disallowed due to an offside, but it was clear that Switzerland was getting very close to the tie even before they scored it.
The 90 minutes ended with important opportunities for both teams, especially for France. In the last minute of the regular time, Coman almost scored France's fourth goal but it hit the post. It would have been a great goal and would have saved France from going to the extra time.
After the 90 minutes ended, I thought France was going to do the same as Spain did in their match. They suffered a tie in the last minutes of their match but in the extra time, they destroyed their rival by scoring 2 goals. Mbappe was still on the pitch, and I believed he was really going to do something useful in this match.
During the extra time, we started to see some players getting injured or suffering from cramps. France did an important change by sending Benzema to the bench and introducing Giroud as the new central striker, and Griezmann also left the pitch. Giroud has been the main French striker for several years, but this time, with Benzema's return he has been relegated to the bench.
France still had enough attacking players but not having Benzema and Griezmann reduced their capabilities by a lot. The pace of the match during the extra time wasn't the same, but this usually happens because the players get very tired.
Something important to notice is that even after the first half of the extra time finished, France has only done 3 changes. Switzerland, in comparison, had 6 substitutions. This meant the Swiss squad was fresher and probably with a bit more energy left in their bodies. I don't know why the French referee didn't make more changes. 3 changes are very little for 120 minutes. During the second half of the extra time, France did 2 more changes for a total of 5 changes.
France did a few attacking plays but with no success. Mbappe even had 1 good opportunity but his shot was very awkward. I am really disappointed with Mbappe's performance throughout the match. I thought this player had good chances of becoming not only the best player in the tournament but also the new winner of the Ballon d'Or. After seeing his performance in this tournament, it is clear he still needs more time to mature.
Every minute that passed with the match tied 3-3 felt like a victory for the Swiss players. Even being in the extra time must have been like a victory for them, and when the referee indicated the end of the extra time and the beginning of the penalty round, I am sure the French players felt something similar to a defeat. The French squad should have won this match during the first 90 minutes, and the fact the penalty round was needed to choose the winner meant that France wasn't meeting its expectations for this match. You can see it in the face of the French coach that he was very frustrated for having to participate in a penalty round against Switzerland.
The penalty round began with very solid shots, the Swiss players surprised me once again with their total focus in scoring their penalties, I couldn't see any signs of lack of focus from them. The only player that I did notice with several nervous expressions was Mbappe, although I started to notice this while the match was still at play. He shot the final penalty and unluckily for him, the Swiss goalkeeper guessed the direction and stopped it. The entire tournament was a horrible experience for Mbappe, he didn't score a single goal and he is the only one that misses the penalty causing his team to be kicked out of the tournament.
This result really was a huge surprise, I didn't expect to see the favorite team to win the tournament leaving in the round of 16. Now, I believe Italy is the favorite one but what's good about football is that this type of surprise is always possible.
What's next?
The next match I plan to watch will be later today, England vs Germany. After this match, I will begin to watch football again on Friday for the quarter-finals. Copa America is finally reaching its exciting phase so I will also be watching matches from that tournament soon enough.

Este segundo gol se debió principalmente a la buena suerte de Benzema, pero el movimiento de Griezmann y la combinación con Mbappé fueron geniales.
En menos de 5 minutos el partido pasó de un penalti a favor de Suiza que les hubiera dado una ventaja de 2 goles, a una ventaja repentina de 1 gol a favor de Francia. Así de loco puede ser el fútbol cuando los partidos son lo suficientemente intensos.

Yeah, that was probably one of the worst matches for Mbappe in his entire career. Good for the Swiss players though. I wonder if that can also defeat Spain that would be even crazier haha.

Pero también ya todos sabemos del ultimo penalti cobrado por la estrella de PSG Mbappé que lastimosamente, resulto ser descubierto y tristemente dejarlo sin pase a él y a su equipo a cuartos de finales, que triste fue ver como a la recién campeona quedo fuera de este torneo siendo considerada favorita del mismo. Así es, terrible para Mbappe, este torneo creo que lo va a dejar tocado un buen tiempo. Lo hizo muy mal todo. Por ahora el Alemania Inglaterra va 0-0 y Kane me recuerda a Mbappe, un delantero joven y prometedor pero con un pésimo torneo hasta ahora. 0 goles lleva Kane y eso que en la Premier League casi siempre es el goleador número 1.
