Wimbledon - June 30

Looks like every day we have a few surprises at Wimbledon. I'm not against surprises, but if I have to chose, I'd prefer good, pleasant ones, but I don't get to chose, neither do the players or anyone else.

Lloyd Harris vs Andrey Rublev

This was one of the surprises and not pleasant at all. Those who are following tennis may ask how could I even think the South African Harris could win against the Russian Andrey Rublev as the latter is a top level player. Well, I know the chances were slim, but not impossible. Harris is capable of winning against top level players, he has proved that over the past year. He had 15 aces in this game, while Rublev only had six. However, yesterday was not the day. Looks like Rublev was better yesterday and I have to respect that.

Another factor that needs to be considered is the court. Most of the users prefer hard, grass is not the favorite of many, clay is in the same situation.

Players have been complaining about the quality of the court, they say it's slippery. Many of the players fell, among which Djokovic, Nick Kyrgios and Serena Williams, who had to withdraw due to getting injured. These are just three players I know but there may be others as well. I suspect the rest of the players are cautious to protect themselves from getting injured, but this can cost them some points at times.

Oscar Otte vs Andy Murray

Andy Murray proved us what he's capable of yesterday, winning against the German Oscar Otte. He needed five sets, but at the end of the day the result that counts. He's qualified for the next round and we get to see him playing another time.

Dan Evans vs Dušan Lajović

Dan Evans made his fans proud and had his victory against Dušan Lajović in just three sets. I bet a lot of eyes are on Evans at this point and Brits are hoping to see him on the list as high as possible.

Denis Shapovalov vs Pablo Andújar

Shapovalov just got huge gift from Andújar as the match was a walkover and all this without even playing a minute. I'm not happy as Andújar is still a good player that can bring value to the match, but there must have been a good reason for him to not play. Thus Shapovalov got a day of rest, which can be helpful in winning the next match.

Felix Auger Aliassime vs Thiago Monteiro

This match actually was a nice surprise. I've been following Aliassime's evolution to see if he's as talented as they say but so far this year he has brought more disappointment than joy. He's still young I get that, but still. Most of the time he's been eliminated in the first round, or the best case scenario, in the second. Yesterday he was able to win against Thiago Monteiro and qualify for the next round. The rest of the journey will be tough as the more he advances, the better players he has to play against. Let's see. Maybe working with Tony Nadal will show some results.

Novak Djokovic vs Kevin Anderson

The result of this match was clear before it started. The South African 2m giant is a very good player, but he's not at the top of his game anymore as he's been dealing with injuries and surgeries. He's at the end of his career, but yesterday he still has managed to play well and make the Serb work for the victory.

Jordan Thompson vs Casper Ruud

Casper Ruud losing to Jordan Thompson was an unpleasant surprise. I didn't expect Ruud to be eliminated so quickly to be honest. It was a tough fight as the first two sets ended in tie-break and unfortunately Ruud lost both of them. Maybe if he would have managed the win those tie-breaks the outcome would have been different. It's tough to lose two tie-breaks in a row. Well, Thompson was better and he deserved to qualify for the next round.

Yoshihito Nishioka vs John Isner

I left the most painful result to the end. My most favorite, John Isner had to say good bye to the tournament, to my surprise. I was hoping he can win yesterday, but the five set match ended in favor of the Japanese.

This weekend will be interesting, full of exciting matches, so I'll be back with more reports.
