On the first day of competition at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, China is clearly in the lead in the medal table by country.

The first day of the Tokyo 2020 Olympic medal table by country sees China at the top with three gold medals, all in the women's sector, in Halteriflia, Women's Individual Sword and Compressed Air Rifle (won on the first day of competitions) and four medals in total, including one bronze medal.

An excellent Italy placed second with a gold medal (Vito dell'Aquila in Taekwondo) and a silver medal (Luigi Samele in Men's Individual Sabre).

Latin America wins its first gold medal with Richard Carapaz of Ecuador in Cycling - Men's Road Race.

Japan, Korea, Hungary, Iran, Iran, Kosovo and Thailand also won their first gold medals.

Surprisingly, no other European country has won a gold medal on the first day of these Olympic Games. Not even Russia.

But the most notable absence from the Top Ten is the USA, so far without a medal.
