Running in the mist

There's something really appealing about running in the mist, just a few paces forward and you disappear from the world behind you and likewise it from you. It's a little harder to breath and I felt the moisture build up in my hair. But felt quite dramatic, a different perception of the world.

Maybe not the best time to start running again but better now then never. I'm a little disappointed in my efforts as its been some time between training due to the busy life and its stresses. I made 3kms tonight at an average pace of 6:5 per km.

A massive slice to my time and fitness levels, it wasn't too long ago I was running marathons, well that's in part a lie. It was close to 10 years ago but it feels like yesterday. It's not so much that I've gotten unfit but rather that during lockdown I switched from running to cycling as it was easier on my knees and body. But you don't burn as much in a shorter time period. A 23min run burned 400 calories, where has a 23min bike ride I was burning 190 - 220 calories. Half the amount. I'm looking to drop some weight I've built up recently and running is by far the best. Really feel it on your diaphragm.

I'm a little sad that I only lasted 23mins but I know in a few weeks I'll be able to run further, faster and longer. I also know bike riding will decline and be harder. It's amazing how our bodies are able to alter. I'm planning on keeping up the riding.

Especially now that I've bought a kiddie trailer and the kids are enjoying coming out with me. The added resistance really helps muscle development and keeps me building more. But it's a different type of work out.

I was struggling tonight which is really hard to grasp as in 2018 I ran around Magnetic Island in Townsville, Queensland to take in all the views. Took me two days, 3 - 4 hrs each night with stops and sight seeing.

I was then deployed to bushfire to Mallacoota and ran 10kms each night to see more of the beautiful local town which is on the New South Wales and Victorian boarder. I really enjoyed running for the sightseeing, it gives you a sense of purpose and you think "Oh that looks good I'm going to run there to see how it will look or I want to check out that".

I spent a few days running there as it was a big town with lots to see and do.

I'm quite privileged to be living in Australia, a really safe country and the whole time I was running I was thinking about how fortunate I am. Some countries around the world this would not he considered a safe time to go for a run, but for me it wasn't a second thought to do so.

I thought about how much of the world some people are missing out on, you do think about negative stuff to while running. what if I get mugged etc. But it's a rare occasion in Australia. We also don't have any guns so I know no one will be mugging me at gun point.

But I thought I would start tracking my progress on running as I build up my capacity and stamina to keep going.

I'm interested in knowing what some of your tips and tricks are to increase your cardiovascular power. Let me know in the comments section below.
