Chelsea looked like the team to beat in the race for this Premier League title as they knew how to grind out results even when the odds are stacked against them. They have responded well after back to back defeats at the hands of Manchester City and Juventus and they staked their claim yet again with a solitary strike against the giant-slaying newcomer; Brentford.

Chelsea did everything to win the game but the goal came from Ben Chilwell and it was enough to hand Chelsea the win and a return to the summit despite Liverpool's exploit earlier in the day.

Bryan Mbeumo got the chance to give Brentford the lead earlier in the game after a lovely delivery from a freekick managed to fall to his but his shot was denied by the post much to his disappointment and Chelsea have their post to thank for saving them from that early scare.

Immediately after the scare, a counter-attack ensued and Timo Werner was sent clear. He managed to keep the ball before finding Romelu Lukaku inside the box and his cheeky flick found the back of the net but the lineman ruled his goal for offside. Kovacic had a moment of his own as well when his freekick was deflected but the resulting effort could only drop on the net instead.

Azpilicueta and Kante combined so well on the side of the post before Azpilicueta produced a good delivery into the box with the hope of finding Lukaku but he was snuffed out. The ball graciously fell into the path of Ben Chilwell whose left-footed strike found the back of the net to register his 3rd goal in 3 games for Chelsea. He is indeed the man in form for Chelsea as he is producing just when they needed it. It was a welcomed lead for Chelsea who had to dig deep until the 45th minute before breaking the deadlock.

Lukaku shocking miss a chance destined to find the back of the net especially with his past form for Chelsea. Timo Werner was found in the box and his shot was blocked off before falling into the path of Lukaku but he blasted his shot over the bar. Mendy on the other end had to deny Toney after his strike from the corner kick was blocked off by the goalkeeper.

The lack of luck continued for Bryan Mbeumo after he was perfectly found in the box after beating the offside trap and for the second time in the game, he was denied by the post again. Brentford showed why they are the gain slayer as Mendy had to be at his best yet again to deny another brilliant effort before Chalobah cleared the ball off his line for the second attempt in quick succession by Brentford.

Mendy had to also use his face to deny Jensen as Brentford kept piling up the pressure. Mendy had to again deliver Chelsea after an acrobatic effort was pushed over the bar by him. It was a top performance from Mendy because, despite the bombardment of Brentford, he was the one who kept Chelsea in the game. Despite not being at their best, Chelsea got the result and that's what really matters in football and they reclaimed their top spot.
