It was a friend be star performance for Spain on the day as they produced a spirited performance against Slovakia to come second in the group.

Spain should have gotten their first goal of the game in the 11th minute after Koke was kicked in the box and Morata stepped up to take the penalty. Dubravka produced a moment of magic to deny the Spaniard. 8 minutes after, Azpilicueta delivered a lovely cross into the box that was missed by Pedro by a whisker. Not long after, Spain still continued to bombard Slovakia and this time around it was Morata who had a shot. It was a brilliant strike met by equally a brilliant save.

Everything was going well for Dubravka in goal for Slovakia until his horror moment came in the 30th minute which ultimately led to the first goal of the game. A terrible back pass from the defender found Sarabia who produced a lovely strike at goal that clipped the top right corner of the bar. It was heading home and the goalkeeper was trying to parry it over the bar and unfortunately for him, he pushed it into his own net.

Spain had another effort by Koke. It was an audacious effort that flashed just wide. Not long after, Pedri managed to keep the ball in play and floated the ball into the box and Laporte was on hand to head it home. It was perfectly placed as it found the top right corner of the net to make it 2-0.

It soon became 3-0 when Pedri found Alba who delivered the ball into the box for Sarabia to guide it home. Spain were not done and Ferran Torres who came in for Morata got his first touch and goal just seconds after coming in. Sarabia played a good part in finding Torres in the box and from a tight angle, he managed to flick the ball home.

The rout was completed when Pau Torres tried to bundle the ball home but Kucka got the last touch as the ball found its way into the net to make it 5-0. Spain finally got their home success after several tries.

Spain qualified and would be playing against Croatia. It would be another interesting match.

Sweden produced a masterclass to head the group after beating Poland by 3 goals to 2. Lewandowski was helpless to prevent the loss as he came up to deliver the goods twice for his team but they still fell short.

Sweden got off to a great start in the 2nd minute when Isak was brought down and the ball trickled to the path of Forsberg who wasted no time in smashing home the ball to make it 1-0. Lewandowski must feel unlucky when his double header in quick succession was denied by the cross bar, twice.

Zielinski hammered the goalkeeper with three shots in quick succession as the goalkeeper pushed the first to safety before saving the other and then the third one got deflected for a corner kick. Sweden should have added to their tally after Olsson struck but the goalkeeper saved it and the follow up fell to Forsberg whose shot was also deflected for a corner kick.

Not to be denied for long, Sweden got the second goal and it was Forsberg again with his intelligent movement and sweet strike in the 59th minute.

Shortly after the goal, Lewandowski was played through and he showed that class is permanent after he produced an exquisite strike after cutting in and finding the back of the net from an impossible distance and angle to reduce the deficit.

In the 84th minute, Lewandowski drew his side level after he was found in the box. He stopped the ball and perfectly placed the ball into the net. With a comeback on the horizon, Sweden broke the hearts of the Polish fans when Claesson was found in the box and his cool finish beat the goalkeeper at his near post. The game ended 3-2 and Sweden topped the group.

Sweden would be battling it out with Ukraine who qualified as one of the best losers.

My prediction for this group was wrong once again as I predicted Spain and Poland but Sweden and Spain qualified.

Here is how the table ended:

Sweden - 7 Points
Spain - 5 Points
Slovakia - 3 Points
Poland - 1 Point

Last 16 Fixtures:

Sweden v Ukraine (Ukraine qualified as one of the best losers)
Spain v Croatia

After failing to leave up to expectations in their first two games, Glad to see Spain wake up from their slumber. Great performance dispatching the Slovakians. Round of 16 tie against Croatia would really be interesting. Look forward to it.

Sweden on the other hand showed how much they needed the win by seeing off Poland. The Ukraine game in the knockout will be really tricky has any side at this stage would be going all out for the win

Absolutely true. You made valid point there. Spain woke up and let us hope they will turn up again.
