As a beginner when you practice martial art, maybe you think what you are doing. You are there to kick, punch and do some cool stuff. But all you are doing is exercise and stretching. You are not there to do gymnastic.
Well, you can move your hand freely. How about legs? You can walk and run. Can you raise your leg up and hit with your legs? Maybe you are not comfortable doing that or you cannot do that.
If you cannot kick, you will not be able to kick as a defense of kick. In order to kick properly, you have to spend time to do stretching and exercise. Flexibility is important in martial art. If you are not flexible, you cannot make some moves. You will get hurt when you try to do that.
As a beginner, you need to spend more time to do stretching. Then you can easily raise your legs up and kick.
You can use your hands to block a kick. Here you first defend the kick and then counter-attack. You can intercept your opponent's kick. To intercept the attacker's kick, you have to understand what is coming. Then you kick to hit the attacker first before he is able to touch your body.
Speed makes the difference in this situation. You have to be very fast to kick as a defense of kick. Otherwise, it will not work. If you can do that, that's great. There are many moves in martial art that defends on martial artists whether it would be effective for self-defense or not.
