Maybe you have some predetermined thoughts. When you fight based on what you thought before. You know your opponent if you fight in a fighting competition. You study your opponent's move and you have a good idea about his skills.

There is a time difference when you thought about your opponent's skills and the skills he has while fighting at the present. You have to consider the present moment. Skills can be improved, so when you fight, your opponent can be better at fighting than before.

It is not like just punching and kicking. You observe your opponent and see how he reacts against your move.

When you fight for self-defense, most of the time, you might not have any idea about the attacker's skills. The attacker will not keep quiet when you make your move to strike him. When it comes to self-defense, your goal is to defend yourself, you hurt the attacker that much that is needed to defend yourself.

If you forget that and do not observe how the attacker reacts after your strike, you might do something that is not necessary. Again don't fight based on your predetermined thoughts. Be at present and see what's going on and how the attacker react.
