Dustin Poirier suggests change to BMF title fights

I am no fan of the BMF belt. I think it is a championship for popular fighters who aren't good enough to actually win real championships and for the most part, I am not incorrect about this. The people who have won the BMF belt don't really treat it with a great sense of pride, because even they know that this belt is a sham. It's a popularity contest that ends in a fight, and while these fights do tend to be quite good, at the end of the day that belt doesn't mean jack squat and everyone knows it.

It certainly didn't help matters when the very first BMF bout had to be ended early because of doctor's stoppage since Nate Diaz was bleeding "too much" and Jorge Masvidal didn't actually win said fight. When the Rock was putting the belt on him, the Rock looked as if he was uncomfortable being there as boos rained down from the in-house crowd. I admit I was booing at a television many miles away from the actual venue, and I believe tons of other people around the world were doing the same.

As much as I criticize the existence of this belt, I will admit that almost all of these bouts have been absolute crackers though. This is especially true in regards to the last one that was a slugfest all the way to the final seconds where we the audience were given one of the most exciting 10-seconds in MMA history where both fighters emptied the tank in the final moments of the bout resulting in a KO just before the bell.

Holloway was extremely excited for this victory, and he should be. However, he hasn't exactly been bragging about his BMF belt, just like all the people that have held it before. When you think about it, this belt is really stupid since almost all of the time, the two competitors are in the same weight category and there is really no reason that they couldn't face one another in a normal fight rather than introduce a belt since in every BMF fight that has happened thus far, the two competitors had already been given a run at the "real" belt and failed to capture it.

It's about making money, nothing more.

Well Dustin "the Diamond" Poirier had some thing to say recently, as he prepares for his BMF fight coming up in a couple months that I think would really make the BMF fights much more exciting.

It's not that big of a difference, but it is one that would ONLY apply to this particular contest. It's simple, but very different from other matches. It's one of these things and lets see if you can guess which one it is.

A) Allow steel chairs to be used during the match
B) the fight continues until one man quits or is KO'd
C) the first round will be 10 minutes long

Now the first two definitely sound like something that UFC would like to do as they delve more into a WWE-like mindset, but the real answer is "C."

Poirier also suggested that the winner of the fight if it goes to judges decision, would be determined by who the overall winner was, not a round-by-round numeric system. This is also a good idea because there have been many fights where a fighter wins the first 2 round and then just plays "run away" for the rest of the fight. Or, someone will win a majority of the rounds but in the later rounds manages to barely stay conscious until the final bell.

To use Dustin's words, the winner should be decided by "which guy do you think would be walking out of the Octagon?" if the fight were to continue indefinitely?

As far as anyone knows, Dustin and Dana White are on friendly terms with one another but I am sure that Dana isn't really that pleased that anyone is attempting to talk in any official capacity behind his back but right now, Poirier has nothing to lose because his upcoming fight is his last one in UFC and perhaps in MMA (although I doubt that since almost nobody truly retires in UFC.)

It would be nice in my opinion, if the BMF belt meant more than just some hyped up exhibition bout that doesn't actually mean anything as far as rankings are concerned and if this belt is going to stick around, I think it would be a good idea if they were to make the event truly special and different.

What do you think?

Definitely changing away from the normal rules would add some extra interest to these BMF bouts and maybe extending the final round would make more sense because whoever is stronger at the end should come out on top.

As much as I hate on the BMF bouts, they do tend to be crackers. Some of the best fights we have had in the past several years actually. I just don't like the idea of a completely made up award that is based mostly on popularity.
