Poirier pushing for a McGregor trilogy because: money

He'll do interview after interview about how the trilogy is necessary to prove who the best is and how it is all about the sport and how it is for the fans and other such nonsense but come off of it already Dustin, we know what this is really about and it's the same reason why everyone else wants a shot at Conor now too - because you know you are going to get a much better payday than if you fight anyone else.

This is why everyone and their mom tries to look for justification to have a match against the guy. This is why Jake Paul, who is a grade-A moron, tries to call out McGregor. McGregor, despite not performing very well lately, is the biggest draw in MMA and fighting against him guarantees huge payouts.

It's real easy to be best buds with someone that has knocked you out and then you later knocked out, when at the end of it all both of you since a rather large bump to your respective bank accounts. I don't really like that this has become a massive aspect of UFC: People aren't even pursuing the belt anymore, instead they focus on getting a big following and their ability to talk smack and have a good PR team is just as important as their ability in the ring.

What Poirier really should be doing is pressing the UFC for a match with Khabib and see if that same money can be dedicated to that fight instead of even including "The Notorious One" in the mix at all. Do you want to get bypassed by Michael Chandler? Because if you keep this up that is what is going to happen as all eyes are on him right now after his stellar performance in his first fight in the UFC.

While Poirier is busy chasing money with the proposal of a completely irrelevant-to-the-division trilogy with Conor, Michael Chandler, who had an amazing 1st round KO victory over Dan Hooker, is busy calling out Khabib and if Khabib doesn't take the bait, he's gunning for YOU Poirier.

Chandler has even gone so far as to make sly and slightly snide remarks about the UFC talent pool being overrated and that Bellator (which he just transferred over from) has better talent in their ranks. This is clearly a ruse to perhaps put a fire under Dana White, but it is working. Chandler went from unranked to number 4 with just one fight in the UFC. Poirer clawed his way to number one and doesn't seem terribly concerned with actually winning the belt but instead wants to ride the gravy train to the bank with an unneeded 3rd fight with McGregor.

Not that I wouldn't like to see that fight but that is a side-show man! What is the point of having the belts if it isn't the most sought after aspect of the business? I realize that money is the main motivating factor for most athletes but this is just getting ridiculous. We all know that Conor is the most bankable MMA fighter in the world but I just find it frustrating that getting a bout with him seems to be more important than the championship - which is where the real money really ought to be.

There could be more to this story though: It could be that Poirier is actually afraid to face Khabib again, since their fight was a rather one-sided affair that resulted in Dustin getting submitted in the 3rd round.

What do you think?

I couldn't agree more with what you are saying!

Can we wait another year or two before giving these guys a rubber match? I know Conor is supposed to be at his best with a revenge ("a la" vs Diaz), but I don't see him readopting his wider foot stance, so he will never win again vs Poirier with a classic boxing flat footed stance, it won't happen.

Let's make Mcgregor vs Tony Ferguson, Chandler vs Poirier.
Oliveira can go fight Gaethje and everyone is happy, especially the fans.

What would make sense is a grand prix tournament like in Bellator, for the belt.

Khabib wants to be a soccer player now, can we just move on with our lives already?

Great post buddy, I am preparing a big one for UFC 258, 800 words and I am just on the main event for now haha.

surely you jest. I'm gonna have to look that one up. Maybe he should go box Jake Paul?

I would LOVE to see a tournament for the vacated belt, if that is what ends up happening but I still believe that Khabib is holding out for more money - his presence ringside at 259 kind of leads me to believe that he isnt' really going anywhere.

that's hilarious. Immediately i thought about Michael Jordan playing baseball and how that didn't work out so well for him. Oh well, he has enough clout that he could probably get picked up by a team but I doubt it would be either of the top-flight teams that he has chosen.

I think once you reach a certain level, your mind is convinced it can accomplish anything you set it to. Rightfully so by the way.

I doubt it would be either of the top-flight teams that he has chosen.

A russian team would do it just for the attraction it will bring

I think he is an emotional guy, like a lot of fighters. I think one good fight will get him out of retirement. But it needs to be a dominating guy with a perfect record.

You are right as see no point in a trilogy as it was so one sided the last time out. Doesn't matter what McGregor does his weakness is taking kicks to his legs. Unless he knocks Poirier out in the first two rounds he has no chance. This is all about the money and everyone wants to see Khabib next.
