UFC pay-per-views to increase in price

For me the price of UFC's was already ridiculous unless it was for a bar to be showing it. Although I am not sure how the process works, bars (so I have been told) pay a fee depending on what the capacity of the establishment is. This can be hundreds or even thousands of dollars depending on the event and there probably isn't any bigger draw than Conor McGregor.

Therefore, it only makes sense for the boys on the board in UFC to nickel and dime us with a $5 increase on the pay-per-view price starting with UFC 257 which of course Conor is headlining. The new price will be a whopping $70.

Look closely at the above picture: Those are all $1 bills. I can afford to do that Conor. Considering your net worth that is pretty stingy!

Personally, I don't know anyone that actually pays for pay per views but I am guessing that there must be a lot of people that do. Everyone I know simply finds and online stream out of Asia where the fights are broadcast on regular cable television for free. I suppose they couldn't really charge a lot for the fights in many of these countries because the people simply wouldn't watch or they would just steal the feed anyway, particularly in places like China.

The thing I find upsetting about this price hike, even though it doesn't affect me in the slightest is that it kind of seems like they are taking advantage of a group of people that are already kind of struggling financially. Tons of people are out of work right now so what a wonderful time for multi-millionaires to fleece a few more dollars out of the public?

Another aspect that I find less than awesome is the card itself. Sure Poirer vs MeGregor is going to be good, but when you look at the rest of the card it is kind of a "meh!" lineup.

  • Marina Rodriguez vs. Amanda Ribas

  • Julianna Pena vs. Sara McMann

  • Shane Burgos vs. Hakeem Dawodu

  • Nasrat Haqparast vs. Arman Tsarukan

The card just gets worse from there and in my mind this is a "who's who of who cares."

Go ahead and take a guess: Who is that in the picture above? She's on the main card!

I am a relatively avid fan of the sport and I had to look up a few of those names to even know who the hell they are. Also, the PPV's are considerably less exciting considering that no one is allowed to attend. It remains to be seen if this is going to change at all by the end of January but I would be willing to bet if fan attendance is allowed at all, it is going to be a very small amount of people.

UFC is probably very aware of the fact that many people are going to steal the event using online sources and also realize that there is nothing that they can realistically do about that. To me the PPV model is going down the same line that the music industry went down in the late 90's and early 2000's. They keep abusing people who are willing to purchase things legally until everyone is stealing it. Then and only then will they change their policies regarding this.

Oh well, like I said it doesn't affect me or anyone I know and I suppose the fact that Dana White and company are a bit on the greedy side doesn't really surprise anyone. I would bet that this is happening because of the millions upon millions of dollars that they are losing at these events by virtue of the fact that no one is allowed to sell tickets for it - which, by the way, were waaaaaay overpriced as well. I considered attending one of them a few years back only to discover the seats in the nosebleed section were hundreds of dollars each... no thanks!
