Cricket - The Story of 22 Yards !

Do You Know.

The national sports of India is Hockey.

But Craze of Cricket among the Indians made it so popular that many considered it as a Religion in India.

India is considered to be the land of multi language, multi culture and multi religion. But one thing that unite everyone is Cricket. Any game of sports is considered to be a great leveller but bringing a unity among the community is quite an achievement....hey...at some time loss or win might create a spark as well.*

The Evolution of Cricket India.

Independent India always remember the greatness and massive contribution of Dhyanchand in Hockey. He got lot of accolades and applause from our countrymen as well as from the British empire. The fast moving feets in the Hockey field and they way he dribble the ball was an icon for youth during his era.

But the Britishers are the one who have introduced the sports to India. It was believed that Cricket was invented in the vast fields of England, supposedly by shepherds who herded their flock. Later on this game got good support and interedtbby the english aristocrats, and soon it got the stature of being England's national game.

The sport of cricket has a known history beginning in the late 16th century. Having originated in south-east England, it became the country's national sport in the 18th century and has developed globally in the 19th and 20th centuries

The British brought cricket to India in the early 1700s, with the first cricket match played in 1721.

What is Cricket.

That question might surprises many European people. I remember once I talked about this to one of my friend and he was like....what is Cricket??. It was very surprising for me, as the sports which has so many follower all over the world and many worship them as religion, there is some part of the world which is not aware about the game.

Typically Cricket is game of Bat & Ball between two teams. Wait..wait. dont get confused with Baseball, as it is totally a different game. I remember too , my friend too compared Cricket with Baseball. However both the games are quite different. The two games differ in their rules, terminology, playing equipment, number of players, field size etc.

Cricket is a bat-and-ball game played between two teams of eleven players on a field at the centre of which is a 22-yard (20-metre) pitch with a wicket at each end, each comprising two bails balanced on three stumps. ... When ten batters have been dismissed, the innings ends and the teams swap roles.

So the entire game of Cricket played at the centre of the ground in the 22 yards which is called as pitch. The pitch used to be quite tough to play on. And the bowler and batsman play their role in those 22 yards and the rest entire 10 players spread over the ground.

Role of 11 Player

As each Cricket team is formed of 11 players they have some specific role to play. The 11 players got specialized in 3 different role.

  • Batsmen : The players who hold the bat, and responsible of scoring runs on each balls bowled by the opposition bowler.
  • Bowler : The players who hold the ball and responsible of throwing g it to the batsman either to get him out or to prevent them from making runs.
  • Fielder : All the players in the fielding team were spread across the fields, while the rest of the batting team used to rest outside the ground. The fielding Players (10) who assist the bowler in achieving his goal, and prevent the batsmen from scoring runs.

Amazing Facts

Th "Cricket" word used to be for a kind of insect, however, for the name of sports is quite unclear. However, in process of writing this post, I also got intrigued to know the Origin of the word for the game. A little investigation.

The name is originally thought to either have been derived from the Old French “criquet”, meaning “goal, post, or stick” or from the Middle Dutch “kricke”, meaning “stick” or “staff”. The latter Middle Dutch derivation from “kricke” is generally considered more likely due to the strong medieval trade connections between south-east England and Flanders, which belonged to the Duchy of Burgundy. src

Looking back, and now, the game of Cricket has Cricket has taken a long walk earlier it was originally played with a stick that more or less looked like a hockey stick. Bowlers, at the time, typically kept the ball on the ground or at least skimmed the ground, instead of pitching the ball with a bounce.

It is a legacy that has been carried by generation after generation. From being a game brought in by the British empire, we Indians have understood the game and get hold of it to be one of the best Cricketing nation around the world today. There is a long history of it and we make it look so easier.

It is very deep game and hopefully, I might bring you more to make it popular among everyone.

Peace

Namaste @steemflow

I find it funny how the English introduced sport around the world and they are bloody useless at most of them. Nice post and good to see more cricket appearing.

Too be honest the standard has dropped so much no one cares anymore. There are 3 or 4 decent players and the rest are club cricketers. Local cricket is a joke and our club side would have beaten the provincial teams today. AB lost a lot of respect when he was captain and allowed them to stick Vernon Philander in when he was injured and they lost the semis because of this. It may improve at some point but politics is heavily involved.

Politics is what spoiling everything...while here team got over of the politics so now it's time of being captain favourites...as MSD made it possible now the trend keeps continuing...like for example...sansju Samson is good wk+batsman but Rishabh Pant being Kohli good friends is getting most opportunity...he is a WK and considered to be hitter, but never see him batting like a pro...but still he is in team...hope efforts should be made to keep the gentleman games ...clean and clear.
