Indian Premier League - Cricket Biggest Extravaganza (How and Why)

I believe, Its too late for me to write for this community, when I came across this community, it already has a good amount of popularity. People were quite happy to share about the passion of sports and share some interesting facts and figures. But better late than ever, hopefully I pitched in at the right time to make my contribution. And the sports I am gonna talk about is Cricket....cricket not those cricky insects, but the Game, the life line of India.

Dont be surprised of me choosing this Game. But being an Indian, Cricket runs in everyone blood. Ask anyone or a kid or a youth or an old, everyone are fond of Cricket. Go out on streets, parks, dont be surprised to find people.playing Cricket. It is kind of Religion and every Indian follow it whole heartedly. (let me clear Cricket is not the National Sports of India)

The other reason may be because the passion for this game has came back strongly with the Indian Premier League (club cricket format like UEFA /EPL league) already started in middle of the pandemic. This is quite big step considering social gathering is prohibited in almost every country. So as inside the Stadium, the game is played without any audience, but the excitement is such that it keep every Indian on their toes in their home.

I already came across few of the interesting post about the mathches that were played as of now. But I am not here to make a review or give any prediction. However, it is very interesting to know how this form of game came into existence.

Indian Premier League

Commonly known as IPL is the shorter format of Cricket. Shorter in sense because it is a 20 overs a side game. So it hardly take 3 hrs to complete the entire matches. It is also called as the Glamourous format of game with many sponsors pitches in and so much excitement and adrenaline involve. You can easily imagine by putting it in line with English Premier League or UEFA league of soccer .

Cricket Shortened Format.

The shorter format of Cricket which is known by 20-20 or T20. It was first introduced in New Zealand in 1990. But it is officially brought into picture by the England and Wales Cricket Board, in 2003.

The main motive of T20 was to make cricket interesting among the domestic levels. But slowly it garner so much craze and popularity that it is now played internationally. Many international matches were played between cricket playing nation.

After looking at the excitement, IPL was put into framework. The league was founded by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) in 2008. And since then every year the matches were played in the month of April/May. This year it is the 13 edition of the league. BCCI is the most wealthiest cricket board among all cricket playing nation.

IPL Tournament

Eight different teams were formed under the IPL. Each of the teams were named with the indian cities. Currently following the are the names of IPL teams

• Rajasthan Rotals
• Mumbai Indians
• Chennai Superkings
• Bangalore Challengers
• Kolkatta Knightriders
• Punjab Kings 11
• Hyderabad Sunrisers
• Delhi Capitals

A fixed salary cap were fixed and teams were asked to make their team of 18-25 players through annual auction. Players sign up for the auction and also set their base price, and are bought by the teams that bids the highest for them. There were also some trading window, through which the players were bought and sold.

A team can play 4 overseas player. The squad must include junior level players, overseas player (outside India), and domestic player. Each of the players were in contract for one year.

According to survey by Sporting Intelligence and ESPN The Magazine, the average IPL salary when pro-rated is US$4.33 million per year, the second highest among all sports leagues in the world.

Tournamsnts Rules.

Each of the Eight teams, plays each other twice in a home-and-away format in the league phase. At the conclusion of the league stage, the top four teams will qualify for the playoffs.
The top two teams on the points table face each other in the 'Play-off' and the winner qualifies for the Final.

The teams which finish 3 and 4 place on the points table playes a face off in 'Eliminator 1'. The winner of this match moves into 'Eliminator 2' where they face the losing team from first of the face off between 1 and 2 position for a place in the final.

IPL advantages.

While IPL can be seen as a good source of income for the sponsor, at the same time, it is considered as a great launch pad for many youngsters.

Youngsters who could not get a chance to play in their national or I termination games, get a chance to play with some top players.

Being a shorter format, IPL is a great entertainer. It is like a 3 hrs movies which ends in happy or sad mood with the teams winning and losing. Considering which team you are supporting.

IPL Disadvantages.

While it has so many advantages, it also comes with certain backdrops.

While the tournaments encourages a lot of betting at the root level, the bookies also make their way to the players for match fixing.

So somewhere the IPL format does encourages gambling all over the world.

So far so good, people of India, and around the world simply enjoy watching the game of Cricket on Tele vision. It is quite an entertainer, allowing good amount of fun, excitement, and challenges.
