I'm an Addict.

Hi. My name is Hanshotfirst and am a basketballaholic. No matter how bad I know it is for me (and it is terrible for me) I just can't seem to resist.

Last night I fell off the wagon. I had quit cold turkey. I had sworn not to watch any Chicago Bulls Basketball until they were relevant. So basically forever. But my brother is in from out of town and has not been to the United Center in about nine years so when he said he wanted to go to a game, there was no way I could refuse. Well I could have refused over money... but we got $120 face value tickets for $26.

Even though $0 is too much to pay to watch this dumpster fire, that is still the cheapest ticket I have ever bought for an event at the United Center. It was also a victimless crime. I bought the tickets on the secondary market so it is not like I encouraged are rewarded the Bulls ownership for being clueless morons. Although I did also buy a few bourbon and cokes... because apparently I'm also a basketballholic but for booze.

Because I was going with my brothers and my son, I was determined to have a good time. We decided to lay a small bet on the over so that we had something to root for. We figured the Bulls lineup of all guards couldn't stop anyone so we thought the Raptors could score 235 points by themself. And if the Bulls managed to accidentally score a few while chucking up an obscene number of threes, that would be gravy.

Actual footage from last night's game.

Well we forgot to factor in that this was the first game after the All-Star break. The Raptors were rusty and the Bulls were... the Bulls. So not only did they not hit the over, it was one of the worst basketball games I have ever seen. It looked like a freshman B team game. There were so many turnovers, stupid shots, and just dumb play. It was so funny that it entered the realm of... FUNNY BAD! I love funny bad! That is when something is so bad you actually laugh at it, not with it. This game definitely fit the bill.

The absolute pinnacle of how funny bad the game was occurred during the third quarter. Rob Dillingham, one of the 5 million guards the Bulls traded for at the deadline, drove to the basket for a layup. As he went for a scoop shot, he did something I had never seen before. He airballed a layup. I don't mean he missed. I mean he tried a scoop shot and it was like three feet short of the basket. I honestly could not stop laughing.

Even though the basketball was the worst I have ever seen, I still managed to have fun. First, I was hanging out with my brothers and son so basically anything would have been fun. But the past part was the crowd. We were surrounded by a ton of other fans who had clearly paid $26 for their tickets as well. This meant no one was really there for the game. We were all there to joke around and have fun. We all bonded over yelling stupid things during the game. My favorite is calling the Bulls's center Urkle because Bulls center Jalen Smith really, really, really looks like Urkle. This means any time he did something good or bad, I could loudly yell, "Did I do that?" Other fans had their catch phrases too. It was an incredibly fun community experience.

This pictured has not been altered. He really looks that much like Urkle.

Even though I had fun, I'm going to try to climb back onto that wagon. Maybe the Bulls will be relevant again in 9 years when my brother returns. No they won't.

What a powerful analogy his visit to the United Center with his brother, a victimless crime. Furthermore, getting tickets at a good price and going back with him (his brother) after so many years must have brought back memories of when the Bulls were title contenders. But let's hope they don't take so many years to become competitive again, at least.

The prodigal son always returns home, in this case to see the Chicago Bulls. Although they're not at their best right now, he enjoyed himself with his brothers and son. There's certainly a lot of work to be done in the coming years. Now we just have to hope that management makes good draft picks and gets a truly competitive team back on track.

enjoy your addiction to basketball, it is sound and healthy, contrary to other ill-fate addictions like gambling, smoking or drugs

Do you watch college ball at all? Who is your team?

I actually don’t. I’ll always watch the final 4 but I’ve never been a big college guy.

Airballing a scoop shot is impressive in all the wrong ways! 😂 It sounds like the $26 was well spent just for the comedy alone.

I felt this. I’ve had those games where you walk in expecting pain, and somehow it turns into one of your favorite memories just because of who you’re with. The cheap tickets, the bourbon, the family laughs, and then an airballed layup at point-blank range that’s the kind of thing you don’t forget. Sometimes the worst basketball is the best bonding experience.

Great point about bonding over a bad game. Have you ever had that experience?

I don’t have personal experiences, but I’ve seen tons of fans say the worst games often become the funniest and most memorable when they’re with friends or family.

You're not an addict, you're along suffering fan.
I'm the same with Man United and have always followed them. No matter how bad they get I keep going and hoping for something to change along the way and get back to the top.
Every few years you get a bit of false hope when things go right and then it all falls apart again.
It's what we do.
I've always wanted to go to a bulls game, i've family in Chicago but haven't made it there yet. Hoping to be back in the next couple of years with my own family so at least tickets are cheap if we do. 😂

Thats why I love sports so much. It’s universal. You and I like different sports but still such that shared experience.

When we love something, we will keep looking at it for 24 hours, but even after that, we will feel like looking at it again

Maybe right now the Bulls aren't that exciting to watch at the United Center, but let's just say it's a cheap ticket, and if you add the company you go with, it makes it incredible. Besides, better times are coming to enjoy them even more.
