The Tears, Cheers, and Fears of Indian Cricket Fans

Cricket isn't exported in India, which is a huge emotion. We don't just watch cricket. We love cricket. We connect our emotions with cricket. When India wins, we feel like we've won something big. I still remember when we lost the 2023 World Cup, and I can tell you that I saw 10 to 12 people crying because they were in high anticipation. It had been at least 12 years since India won the World Cup. And then, friend, when India won the 2024 World Cup, I was overjoyed. I'm telling you. Fireworks were bursting in the sky. Everybody enjoys the championships everywhere. When India wins a major team tournament, I'll write it down. At that time, everyone there is so excited that you'll be overjoyed to see it.

There was so much celebration in India when Kapil Dev lifted the World Cup for the first time in 1983. I still remember it. My father used to tell me that at that time no one slept the whole night. They stayed up all day and night dancing because a major trophy was coming to India for the first time. That too, we defeated the West Indies team, and believe me, New Zealand's performance will make you cry. They used to play so well. In that, India was on a low budget, and they did not even have much accommodation. If there is no place to write much, then in my own words, India is one of the biggest places for cricket. Because there we had a lot of BCCI; today, in my earlier times, we did not get proper things. Today we have become such a big cricket board that people take loans from us. This is a big thing.

Then there's the IPL, a franchise that commands a significant valuation these days. The IPL has shown the world that cricket isn't a small country. Each IPL match currently receives at least 500 to 600 million views, with 90% of those views coming from India alone. You can imagine how significant India's contribution to cricket has become, and players like Virat Kohli, MS Dhoni, and Rohit Sharma have made it a reality. Whenever any of these three players enters the field, everyone screams, and the sound DB reaches 130. You can imagine the sheer craze, and the number of people who have retired from international cricket are so enthusiastic whenever they return to play. I once went to the stadium to watch a match. I remember my ears hurting. With so much people shouting, you can imagine how valuable cricketers are in India.

If I talk about myself personally, I have also played cricket till Ranji and almost could have played for the national team, but I broke my ligament, due to which I was not allowed to play, so this was a great training point for me because I loved cricket very much. Imagine if there was no cricket; then I would also not be there, so there was a lot of depression and movement. During that time and since then I did not follow cricket, but nowadays I follow it a little bit. Earlier I used to be completely crazy about cricket. I used to leave at 12:00 in the morning to play cricket, and I used to leave at 10:00 at night, and I can guarantee that I would play the whole day.

Most Indian children dream of becoming cricketers, because as we grow up, we learn how cricketers like Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma achieved so much through their hard work and dedication. It's every person's dream in India to become a cricketer, but their dreams don't always come true. Take me for example; there are many whose dreams don't come true. I was so close to achieving my dreams, but some chances are taken away from me. One of those chances was taken away from me. I've also played for my national team, West Bengal. I can say this to this day: if I hadn't suffered that fracture, I would definitely have played Under-19 today. Nothing in life is in your hands. So, accept what comes and move forward. Today, I don't follow cricket as much because my ideals have become so rigid that I don't enjoy it as much. But still, I always check the score of India's match.

Lastly, I'd like to say that I go to India to watch cricket. I played it with emotion. Whenever India loses, many people are heartbroken. Therefore, everyone strives to ensure that India always wins, but that's not always possible. For example, we qualified for the 2023 World Cup by winning 10 out of 10 matches. But we lost the final match, so you can imagine how sad it must have been. Everyone who was there left, and even today, it's difficult for me to get over that. It was our idol, last game. I so wanted Virat Kohli to deserve another trophy and Rohit Sharma to deserve his first World Cup. They've never won a World Cup under a captain like him. I want them to deserve it. Therefore, there are many times in life when what you want does not get fulfilled, and this is what you have to learn later: that many times the lap wants to break you, but you keep courage and always remain connected.
