Another promising foray into card roguelike fashion

Thanks to my work I can test many games before leaving and this time even though the game is already months old, I have tried Monster Train by Shiny Shoe and Good Shepherd proves to have interesting ideas for a genre in which we have already seen almost everything, and The inclusion of a multiplayer that takes the concept of card roguelike to another level may be your best asset.

Railway to hell

Let's place ourselves in a world where hell has run out of matches. It can happen to anyone. As the keepers of the flames that will torment sinners for all eternity, we go in search of a source of power that can save the business.

¿How do we get her home? Well, it's clear how. By train A hellish railroad journey that must traverse the nine gates of hell as angels try to destroy the source of power and, based on separate letters in spells, items and units, we do everything we can to prevent it.

Its absurd approach is the perfect excuse to place ourselves on a stage with four levels. The highest part of the car keeps the power source protected, while the other three will serve as a battlefield for the angels who are besieging the train.

Starting their attack in the lowest and going up turn after turn, our mission is to do enough damage to them in our first encounter to avoid their promotion to the next one. Two holes per plant and a limited source of mana will be our options to place minions that face the enemy hordes.

Here one comes to suffer

Keeping the different units placed by plants alive and scarfing will prevent the troops of the angels from reaching the source of power. She knows how to defend herself doing a lot of damage to enemies, but as bosses arrive and undermine her life, surviving the road will be increasingly difficult.

Luckily, between battle and battle we can choose different paths that will offer customization and strategy options. The one on the left can be used to improve units and heal the source, while the one on the right can be used to raise money and improve magic cards.

Whatever you do you are destined to suffer, or at least that's what the games in the beta point to. Progress is fairly limited between matches, which added to having only two trial factions, and the insane aggressiveness and power of the enemies, makes it hard to accomplish your objective.

In the absence of being able to test the multiplayer, see what other modes have prepared and know to what extent this beta will serve to touch up progress and difficulty, it is undeniable that the base of Monster Train is as solid as it is fun. Now it only remains to be seen how they feel those touches for the final version that will arrive on Steam.
