Are Grabbing and Locking Techniques useful For Self Defense?

When you practice martial arts, you learn different things. In the previous post, we talk about how complicated the situation could be. Even though you decide not to hurt the attacker pretty badly, you have to make your move to defend yourself.

So are grabbing and locking techniques useful?

In different martial arts, there are locking and grabbing techniques. For example, Aikido. You would see different grabbing, moving, locking, applying pressure, and throwing techniques. Some Aikido techniques can be very useful for self defense.

If the attacker keeps attacking you, you have to hit and strike at some point. You can use what you need based on the situation. Sometimes if you just send the signal that you are not an easy catch, it works. You can just grab and lock the attacker and put pressure. As a result, the attacker will feel the pain. He might not attack you again or at least think twice before doing so.

What kind of techniques are most effective for self defense?

Short, simple, and easy techniques are most effective when you fight in real life for self defense. There is a huge difference when do something in a normal situation and when you do something in a complicated situation under pressure.

Probably you can do some long self defense techniques when you are sparring. But you will find it difficult to apply the same technique for self defense. You might not get enough time, so you have to do it fast. Again while you are dealing with one attacker, you can be attacked by other attackers at the time.

Grabbing and locking techniques are also useful for defending against multiple attackers. You can apply this technique to use one attacker as a shield in order to defend yourself.

Suppose, someone grabs your shirt, your two hands are open. You can punch him if you wish. On the other hand, if you want to grab and lock his hand and make him feel the pain, you can do so. If the attacker is smart enough, you will never attack you again. No one likes to lose his hands.

I can end this post. I think it would be nice if we could watch a video where it shows grabbing, locking and throwing techniques. This is not my video and all video credit goes to Kalaripayattu Kerala.

Well, I don't understand the language that is spoken here. If you understand it, that's great! If you practice martial arts, you are familiar with some of these moves.
