Hivechess season 9 final result: @tungphong is the new champion!

avatar
(Edited)

Dear Chess fans,

the two final rounds of season 9 were played yesterday, with 19 and 18 players and an average rating of 1852 (bullet rating) and 1932, respectively.

Let´s look first at the 2+1 bullet tournament. It seems some have missed, that the start time was 1 hour earlier, and so a few players had less than the required 3 games to be counted as participants.

The winner was @tungphong (blackswan21) - his 6th win in this season! Despite the short time, he berserked most of his games and could keep his chasers, @eniolw (2nd) and @samostically (3rd), 3 points behind. With a larger gap the usual suspects followed, @pamboy27 and @jaki01. Of note, @schamangerbert (HerbyW) could make it in the Top 8, amidst players with several 100 more points rating. Congratulations to All!

After a small break the final 9th round was a 5+1 Swiss mode tournament:
@eniolw ended up as undefeated winner with 6,5/7 points and a record-breaking performance of 2673! @tungphong (blackswan21) was 2nd, followed by @samostically. Congratulations!

In the game between @eniolw (White pieces) and @tungphong, White has already a significant advantage with the dominance on the c-file and the much better placed pieces.
image.png
But on top of this, after ...f4? White could trap Black´s queen with Nd3 and after Qd2 Rc2 Black lost material (Qb3 instead would not have helped due to Ra3).

So the final standing is as follows:

The bullet round 8 was not considered for the performance calculations

The rules you can look up in the announcement post.

image.png

As expected, @tungphong (blackswan21) was the clear dominator of this season with 6/9 wins and the by fast most consistent performance.
@eniolw (who had won the 3 remaining rounds) ended up as second, despite having played one round less than the others! In a heartbeat finish, he was able to overtake both @jaki01 and @pamboy27 (who missed the last round). The four times title winner @jaki01 had again to settle for 3rd place.
Rank 4 went to @samostically, followed by @pamboy27 as 5th.

Congratulations to the winner and all participants!

Special prices

@eniolw won the special price of highest overall performance with 2442,7 (slightly ahead of @tungphong with 2424,5). Impressive!

@b0s (Da_k1ng) won the special price of highest performance in relation to the own rating with a difference of 364,6 ahead of @vasigo with 301,5. Congratulations!

Both will get 10 Hive on top of their regular price. As always, the prices will be transferred in one week, after the payout of this post.

Winner trophy

This is the unique NFT trophy I have created.

It was already sent to @tungphong, you can view it only here at nftshowroom.com.

Season stats

The average tournament rating of season 9 was 1904 (slightly below the 1942 of S8).
In each round we had on average app. 25 players - again higher compared to the previous seasons!
Another record: 40 players made it this times in the rankings, many for the first time! Only 6 didn´t participate 3 times (or have no Hive username), so 34 players will get prices (last season 18)! 14 players participated at least in 8 rounds. It is really great to see, that we have not only more players, but also more regular playing ones!

Thank you all for your participation & engagement (and the upvotes)!
And thanks to the other posters for streaming, tournament reports and advertising this event in your blogs!

There will be a break in the next weeks, but in January 2022 we will go full steam ahead with season 10! Stay tuned, practice and have a great Christmas break, if applicable!

Thank you. I'm susprised I was able to make it to the top places since I missed one round. LOL. Was it because of the Lighteye's Ranking System? Maybe! It brings good luck.

You are a great player, @eniolw but in this ranking system consistency is key. If you didn’t miss one round, the results could be dramatically different. Thank you for your support.

hopefully next year I will be heard and berserk will be voluntary.надеюсь, в следующем году я буду услышан, и берсерк станет добровольным.
And FIDE will ban games shorter than 5 minutesА ФИДЕ запретит партии короче 5мин

You all play chess on a whole different level!.

Lol, thanks, but I really think I play such a crap. :-)
I am considering to make a blitz break, as these fast games favour and cause me to adapt a playing style which is fast, 'mechanic', defensive and risk averse instead of deep, creative and energetic.

Well, that's for you to decide. Do you have a fide rating? Do you still play active chess? Because your chess styles seem to favour a classic binding and manoeuvring in equal positions.

(Edited)

Do you have a fide rating?

Not anymore.

Do you still play active chess?

No.
I found chess to be too time consuming (I never made the effort to invest enough time in opening theory for example) in relation to the benefits. I also noticed how hard professional players have to fight (and how fun gets completely lost if they aren't successful enough as they have to make a living from it). That's why I decided to become a pure hobby chess player long time ago.
I like the creativity of the game, but not so much the technical aspects. I am interested to think about what the best move in a certain position might be, but not so much in what is the most pragmatic way to beat an opponent (by being fast, or causing problems). So anyhow, for me chess is more science or art than sports.

Maybe you know that I created more than 70 chess problems, which I posted here when still being active on HIVE?

but not so much in what is the most pragmatic way to beat an opponent (by being fast, or causing problems

While I played junior chess, my coach taught me some psychological ways to win at chess which worked well. She believed it was not so much about strength but about approaching the game with a strategy to prey on your opponent weaknesses. That was how I learnt the gambit systems i play today. Many say i play chess with tricks, even fide masters that i have beaten. I realized there was so much to winning a game than strength.

(and how fun gets completely lost if they aren't successful enough as they have to make a living from it).

This is really true! There are even GM's that dont make good living from all that knowledge. And analysts once compared studying medicine to studying chess.

Maybe you know that I created more than 70 chess problems, which I posted here when still being active on HIVE

I didn't but I could still find out. I was just curious. Thanks for the well detailed information. You can always find the right balance. I could play some rapid games with you on non-hive chess days If and only if you are free. You can then still join our blitz. Even in all,you are still on the podium

You can then still join our blitz.

Of course, don't worry, I was just talking about a break (or playing less for a while) to get a clear view on the game again. I am a perfectionist anyhow, who hates playing bad chess, but when I am looking at my fast games I can partly only shake my head because of the very weak play.

Anyway, season seems to be over ... so that might be a welcome 'natural' break. :)

Well, I get lucky with the white pieces sometimes. I have noticed you and @stayoutoftherz play the same caro Khan line as black against my 1.e4 . So most times the positions afterwards are drawish if I can hold. Hopefully I review my games and come stronger next season. Thank you very much. !PIZZA

Am I to understand this is a chess game on the Hive BlockChain?
I just read a post two days ago where the writer was saying someone needs to put a chess game on this blockchain.
I love the game of chess but do not consider myself competition level, but I have lost entire days to the game.

No, the games themselves are done on Lichess. We just use Hive to organize the tournaments, write reports about them and last not least - pay the prices in Hive!
Just participate, it is free for all skill levels! Everybody earns Hive when playing.
