Fartlek (Swedish for speed play) is a form of interval training where you get to pick when to sprint. I had been feeling a bit run down this week after Sunday's half marathon, so was still looking to see how things went rather than sticking to a fixed routine. It was fairly cool and overcast this morning, but no rain.

The first sprint was along House Lane, which is mostly downhill and that went fairly well with my second best time for the segment. Encouraged by this I kept doing sprints and even tried one uphill out of the underpass. When I reached Etonbury school I turned off Pendleton Way rather than going all the way to Stotfold. I am quite liking the track out over the fields. That first part was hard work as I hit a headwind. I was listening to podcasts as usual and it got hard to hear them at times over the wind.

I looped back towards Arlesey and managed a personal record on the Horse Gate to the River Ivel Bridge" segment at 4'33" pace. Strava are hiding a lot more data now unless you pay, so it is getting harder to see how I rank. I may just pay.

I was starting to tire by then, but did what I could on the remaining route. A lot of it is on uneven ground, so I need to watch my step. There were not too many people out today, but I met a few on the more remote stretches.

I had to wait a while to cross the bypass as there was a lot of traffic. Then it was the very familiar paths back home. I took the more direct route as it felt like enough by then with a last sprint downhill from the war memorial.

I am feeling like am getting back to normal now. I will rest tomorrow and try a longer run on Sunday.

Breakfast was granola and strawberries with oat milk when I got back. After a shower and some coffee I feel ready for the day.

There is a Hive Running Club on Strava if you want to find fellow Hive runners.

Run free and stay well.

You have uploaded 147 running activities, and 52 of them have been of similar distances (within 10 percent)!
Here are your 5-fastest running activities of a similar distance:

Over these 52 similar activities, you have travelled approximately 364.13 kms at an average pace of roughly 5:53 min/km!
Your latest run was at a pace of approximately 5.453min/km!
Looks like you went a bit faster than usual this time! Nice work!

Great work!

I remember when I was a kid, we used to giggle like little girls when our coach would say "Fartlek."

I only learned about fartlek recently. German has 'fahrt' to mean journey that can get a similar reaction from schoolkids.

Sound like a good workout, congrats.

I envy you the strawberries part of it :)

Have a great weekend.

I was happy to get back up to speed. Most of the strawberries came from the garden, but we have still been buying some. I hope the recent rain will help our crop.

So when you say sprint are you going full out or is it just a increased pace over your usual? I guess you are already running so it is probably as fast as possible. I am looking for some intervals I can add into my walking.

You can see from the graph that I am alternating between different paces. I do a gentle jog then go as fast as I can. I do not have fixed speeds to use. I think it is about getting your heart rate up so it can adapt more easily.
