Morning Run - Lockdown Half #10

I just finished a 21.527km running that lasted about 2hh:8mm:42ss !

Tomorrow I was due to be running in the Greenway Challenge, which would have been my first organised event in over a year, but it got put off again when the date for relaxation of COVID restrictions was pushed back due to government incompetence. I know other races are happening, but the organisers must have had assumptions about what rules would be in place and could not just change things at short notice.

I did my first solo half over a year ago when the race was cancelled then and did a load more since. The last was in February and my longest run since then is about 16km. So today was a test of what I could do.

My last run was on Tuesday, but I did cycle a few miles to get a haircut yesterday, I need to work on my cycling muscles.

The forecast said there was a chance of rain, but it has stayed dry today. I should perhaps have got up earlier for it to be cooler, but 15C is not too bad. I did not do the full race course as I have to run a fair bit just to join it at Radwell Meadows. The Greenway was not too busy today. The path is narrow in places, so I did not want to be dodging other people too much. There are a few hills to climb along the way and I did walk a bit on some.

I followed the Greenway until I reached the road coming off the A1 and then headed into town. I tried to stay away from busy areas and traffic. That led me to some parts of Letchworth I had not visited before. I went through the Howard Park and Gardens that I was not even aware of before. I did cut through the Morrison's supermarket carpark, which was not ideal with all the traffic to get to a back road I know that takes me to a footpath under the railway. Then it was back streets to Standalone Farm where the race start would be to rejoin the Greenway and then back home via Fairfield.

I managed some second and third best times on various Strava segments, but I may not have run them many times., Strava does not seem to show me the half marathon time. That was one advantage of Endomondo that I used to use. It gave times for all the distances you covered on a run.

I will think about doing another half some time. I need to keep running longer distances, but am still not feeling up to a whole marathon. I was done when I finished today and walked some of the way home.

I was out at a pub jam session this afternoon, which is a different kind of exercise.

Run free and stay well.

I'm not feeling too bad today. All that running is keeping my legs in shape.

I am extremely impressed that you can mostly maintain a sub 6min km pace for this sort of distance. I have a goal to reach that point someday in the future. At the moment I am having a problem with my right knee so doing more than 10k's is asking for trouble. These days I am doing 2 separate 5k's each day and monitoring the knee. I don't want to get taken out of the game by trying to overdo it.

I'm impressed I can do it too! It's come from consistent running over a few years after doing no real regular exercise for ages. I think I do okay for my age.

Hope your knee can improve.
