Mayor of Paris wants to ban cars from city center
In her fight against pollution Parisian Mayor Anne Hidalgo announced that a city dominated by cars after the pandemic is out of the question. The recently reelected Mayor is known for her fight against climate change and environmental issues wants to ban all cars from the city center to make room for pedestrians and cyclists. She even calls it a Vélorution!
She states: “Pollution is already in itself a health crisis and a danger — and pollution joined up with coronavirus is a particularly dangerous cocktail.”. Studies from Harvard University in the US endorse this and show that exposure to particulate pollution significantly increases our chances of dying.
One of the examples is Rue de Rivoli. The busy street where the famous Louvre museum is located was closed for cars on the 30th april and will last at least all summer long, but could be a permanent decision.
I think this is a good development. We see more and more cities limit or even ban cars from the city centers which is a good thing for the environment.
