Right before the getaway
Hi, here I am again, sharing a few things that pushed me to write this post just before grabbing my bike and heading off to a fishing town in Havana. I think I only went there once before by bike, but it was amazing — I had a great time and brought back stories and photos.
Back then I rode my first bike here on Hive, a mountain bike. I really enjoyed it, but now, with my Bianchi road bike — aluminium frame, carbon fork and seatpost — I have to admit that old Kamaron was a real tank. Heavy as anything, it drained me on every ride. 🤣
Surely the experts would say that with a well‑developed and strong heart and legs, nothing feels heavy. Maybe I’m fitter now, though not perfect yet — still work to do.
The place I’m going to in a few hours is famous because the writer Ernest Hemingway left his mark there. I wonder if any reader can guess where I mean… I’m sure someone will, even telepathically. 😁
Of course, I’ll bring back more stories from there today.
But before that, let’s talk about bikes — that thing we all love when we start riding, and soon we start dreaming of those beautiful “spaceships” we see online, designed by the big brands for special occasions.
What really pushed me to write this post was a nightmare.

I woke up crying like a child, not just sobbing but full-on crying. It felt so real. I dreamt I was at a cool café, full of young people — some listening to music, some dancing, some in costume events, others watching videos. I was just sitting at the bar, watching people, which I love to do, and chatting now and then. I’d ordered an instant coffee to take home and some peanut bars, but it was taking ages, so I went to ask the manager.
I met a girl looking in a mirror who said everything was messy because that’s how he was. I told her not to worry, I hadn’t even noticed, I just came to ask about my order that had been delayed more than 40 minutes.
Then another man came, but he said he wasn’t the one in charge and pointed me to a room. Inside, people were rehearsing a play set in Paris. I mentioned my order and went back to the bar. That’s when I realised my bike was gone. I panicked. Another man asked if I was looking for my bike and pointed it out. I sighed with relief — but when I got there, my Bianchi had been stripped. Parts stolen, the rest broken. It was a disaster. I started crying, and that’s how I woke up — in tears, completely heartbroken.
😫
So, where am I going with all this? Well, later on, while I was making breakfast…

these pea fritters I’d soaked for about 12 hours and then mixed it up in a blender with two eggs, garlic, onion, pepper and a pinch of salt, I opened Instagram and saw a reel that really caught my eye.
(I also had an espresso with a splash of milk)
It was about the bike Pinarello designed just for Paris–Roubaix and the watch worn by the riders in Tom Pidcock’s team (Pinarello–Q36.5 Pro Cycling Team).

Seeing all this made me stop thinking about my bad dream. But you can imagine that the very first thing I did when I got out of bed — before breakfast, Instagram and all that — was to check if my Bianchi was okay. I was grateful it had only been a dream, and I gave it a little pat. ;)

I also kept thinking about the whole debate around equipment and technological advances in sport — the pros and the cons. It’s not just a technical issue anymore, but also a philosophical and ethical one. This could be another post, or maybe part of next week’s initiative. What do you think?
As for the two bikes I’ve had since I started taking this more seriously, I can say both taught me a lot. I had to sell the first one for financial reasons. I made sure it went to someone who knows how to take care of it, and thanks to that sale I got the one I ride now. I’ve thought that if I ever leave Havana, I wouldn’t leave my Bianchi behind. Yes, it’s just an object, a material thing, but at the same time it’s a sentimental treasure for me.
Maybe I’d buy a more modern one. Not a Pinarello, but another Bianchi. But that’s another story, and you know me — dreaming is free. Oh, and here’s another fun fact: that special Pinarello × Tissot edition has only 101 bikes, each with a unique Carbon-Matt design and holographic purple and silver details. And apparently the price is around 17K euros. 🤣

Oh noooo what a horrible dream!!! 😪
That pinarello is really beautiful!
A couple of weeks ago, I was working in the house of a VERY wealthy gentleman, among a lot of other sports equipment like ski's and a mountainbike, there was a older pinarello dogma hanging on his wall, all dirty - the chain not maintained well... OMG it's like swearing inside a church you really can't do that, just give it to me and I'll promise to take really good care of it 😂
So... when will you take the Bianchi to The Netherlands? You can ride together with @friendlymoose's Bianchi 👍😁
Haha. I'm not that into meetups, but I'll take @nanixxx on a Bianchi bicycle tour 😀
🤣 I’ll really appreciate it!

😁 Soon! Wait for me soon.
And about that man, why didn’t you ask him for it? He might have given it to you. If he keeps it like that, perhaps it’s because he doesn’t care much, maybe. Besides, the worst management is the one that isn’t done, as the saying goes. 😂
Yes, the dream was horrible, but I believe they’re messages I need to receive hahaha… you know I’m mystical.
Well I almost never have bad dreams, and then I read about your bad dream, and had one of my own in which my wife got kidnapped 😱 mystical place indeed sometimes... or just psychology I don't know 😁
As a professional being there I can't ask that man for his bike, but it shows that if people have loads of money, they don't value the expensive and special things they have but I guess it's the same for all humans, we all take things for granted until they're gone... wow deep shit in the early morning!
🤦♀
But I think that’s absolutely right… it’s true we take things for granted, which is very sad and not very clever.
Good afternoon, @nanixxx. I remember that first bicycle, and I won't forget your current traveling companion.
Dreams are messages (at least to me, they are); I would look into what the wise woman accompanying you is trying to tell you.
As for Ernest Hemingway... I assume you're referring to The Old Man and the Sea... at times, I already feel like that little old man who returned to shore without his catch... yet remained satisfied with his life. (I know this is your post... but that thought just came to me.) 😁
Happy Saturday, my friend. 😎🤗
Good evening, I’ve done 55 km today. After a shower and some food, I’m finishing off the comments on my post, as I still feel a touch of energy. I’ll be sleeping soon.
I love people with a good memory. 😅
I asked someone about the meaning of this dream, and their reply was quite revealing. I’ll reflect on it deeply. 🤔
My friend 😄, that’s a novel already complete, while yours still has chapters to go.
Feliz Domingo para ti, mi sábado estuvo genial. ¡Muchas gracias! 🤗
Good morning @nanixxx, I'm glad to know that the dream told you something, and I'm even more glad that the day was great.
Happy Sunday. 😎
Buenos días 🌻🌞
Buenos días 🌅 👋
What a bad dream! I'm almost never able to remember my dreams. But in this case that wouldn't be much of a problem.
😅 Of course… picture your Bianchi vandalised! Dreadful… yet regarding dreams, experts believe that bad ones aren’t truly bad or omens, but messages tied to the soul and to our present journey. Lessons to help us improve in life and spirit.
@ewkaw! Thank you so much! Always.
You know I don’t know anything about bikes, but I do know about dreams – don’t worry, your bike will be fine... The metaphysical principle says: nothing outside of you can harm you.
Avecilla, entiendo. It’s not about what is seen outside or what I see happening or being physically represented, but about how I’m living it within. I know it all depends on my awareness, on how I interpret and respond to the different situations in life.
I was looking at the possible interpretations of that dream, and it speaks a lot about the things I live, think, and go through.
Thank you! 🤗
I see... there are messages there. Always have something to write things down on for when you wake up; jot down all the details. That’s what I used to do at the start.
👍🏻😊🌞
Hi!
I used to commute to school on a mountain bike. I thought my knees might explode. When I switched to the road bike it was so much faster and easier, but speed bumps weren't any fun anymore like they'd been on the mountain bike...
Why wouldn't you take your bike if you left Havana? Or do you mean leave-leave, like the whole island?
Good morning, it’s been quite a wake-up call. Hahaha… Yes, I was talking about leaving this country. 🤪
Move here! To Portland! It's an incredibly bike-friendly ciudad. Y hay dos restaurantes cubanos en mi calle (pero I'm sure it's nothing like la comida por allí).
😃 Nada es imposible.
🤔... Comida cubana y todo. ¡Pues suena muy bien! 😁
Dreaming is free.... That's what inspires and motivates people to make the good ones real and avoid the bad ones in real life.
Well, let’s go for some sweet dreams! 🤠 Good morning – first things first, I’m off for some breakfast and a cup of coffee. 😂🤓
