It looks nice and amazing to see a martial art demonstration. Everything is clean and nice. You can see each move clearly. It looks that good and clean because what you see is well planned before and practiced like that.

You will also see some fancy moves that look amazing! You can do that for demonstration, but when you are in a fight even in a fighting competition, you cannot do a lot of things.

If your life is in danger and you are under pressure, you might not remember most of the things. So if your focus is to learn self-defense, you should choose martial arts that focus on that and learn moves that are applicable in real life.

Let's watch this video. Please feel free to leave your comments and share your experience. Thank you so much for watching the video.

The moves in kata and forms appear fancy or florid when performed by a high level practitioners because they are not truncated by impact/strike or seen in function like they would be in a Bunkai/2 man form performance.

For example a circular block may seem very fancy but when you understand the first blow takes out the elbow, the second hand then restrains that hand, while they other hand comes up to block the blow from the second hand, you understand its functionality. If you have also done some palm conditioning you have done serious damage to an attacker's elbow, and subdued both his hands.

Believe it or not, your palm is capable of delivering more force than your fist without sustaining any damage. I can literally palm heal a cement wall with all my might and feel no more than a slight sting that quickly dissipates. Unless you have done years of iron fist training ... do not try this with your fist. You do however sacrifice a small amount of reach with the palms versus the fist..

To someone who has no knowledge of a circular block it may appear just a fancy arm movement and when performed in a fight, it might not be recognizable as the same move. It will look different and likely be done a lot faster.

The problem with most forms and kata is that the student does not understand the purpose of the moves and as such is unable to visualize the move properly and get the full benefit from the practice.

Some of kick combinations look serious and unrealistic ... agreed, but again that is often because their purpose is not understood. Jump/spin combination kicks aren't about taking down someone taller than you; they are usually about freeing your leg once it has been captured.

Anyways ... this is where I have discovered their use.

Forms have persisted because they are very valuable and so their value to those who persist with them is great. It is all very well to train in full on contact all the time, but you will not train for long. You will become permanently injured and concussed. Soft contact sparring is great too, but it is unrealistic because a single blow from a well-trained martial artists is enough to take most of us out.

My overall point is that a move in a form/kata performance looks very different from the same move performed say in an MMA ring. The kata allows that move to become ingrained in your muscle movement and overtime you obtain strength, speed, and accuracy from performing the form.

And to train all you need is a little space.

It makes the world of difference to practice forms with understanding each move and without understanding it. When someone understands the application of the form, his force and movement would be different although it might seem the same, it is not.

When my instructor taught me palm strikes for the first time, it seemed it is not that powerful like a fist. Later, I realized how powerful and effective the palm strike is. You can do palm strike easily without getting hurt. On the flip side, you might get hurt while punching.
