Monaco is probably the most emblematic street circuit in motor racing. It is also a symbol of luxury. As usual, we will be analyzing each circuit of the Formula 1 calendar, except for those which were already analyzed last season.

The Monaco circuit or Montecarlo circuit, is an urban racing track that was first used in the 1930s', as reviewed by @greengalletti in his post. Its layout has undergone some changes over time, which did not change its overall shape much, but added the existing chicanes and introduced some other slight changes. Formula 1 started racing in Monaco in the 50's, which makes it one of the mythical or legendary circuits of the top category.

It is the shortest track on the Formula 1 calendar, with a length of 3.337 kilometers. However, the track used in Formula E (Formula Electric) is even shorter.

The circuit is located in front of the Mediterranean Sea, bordering a harbor where many yachts are usually seen. It is a classic Formula 1 circuit, and as explained in this publication: Formula 1 What characterizes the legend circuits?, it has marked characteristics of this type of circuits, but adapted to an urban and narrow environment. Some of these characteristics are: rounded curves, narrow track, ups and downs, and high-speed corners. Although Monaco is a tight and slow circuit compared to others, some of its curves are not exactly hard braking, but are traced at medium speed. We will now examine the circuit in its entirety.

This is one of the tightest first corners on the calendar and in the history of F1. Not only is it tight and at 90°, but it comes after a small "deviation" from the main straight, which complicates its layout a bit. The yellow line represents the pit exit, and has been the protagonist in the past of penalties to drivers who exceed it after making their stop.

This first corner is often the protagonist of accidents, especially on the first lap, where everyone enters at the same time. Let's also remember the accidents of Felipe Massa in 2013 and Max Verstappen in 2015. It is braked hard after a straight of almost 1 km in length.

Curvas 2 y 3 (Casino)

Turns 2 and 3 (Casino)

After a winding uphill straight (one of the most spectacular straights), we reach a medium-high speed sector. Here is where we appreciate a fast rounded curve that is not exactly something we would see in a conventional street circuit. It is difficult to brake here, and that is why there are usually many accidents there.

Immediately after comes a curve to the right, which is also traced at a medium speed. It does not require hard braking, but just enough to avoid crashing at the exit of this curve. This is the Casino curve, and usually gives us spectacular shots of the cars almost touching the inside guardrail.

Sector trabado (5-8)

Tigh sector (5-8)

After avoiding a kind of "bump" or elevation of the asphalt in the middle of the straight between turns 4 and 5, the cars enter a very tight sector with very slow curves, especially turn 6, which is drawn at more than 180 degrees, turning in the opposite direction. This area has tighter, slower speed corners. The turn 6 requires to slow down so much that sometimes the cars are prevented from turning here when trying to exit with higher speed.

This area is very characteristic of Monaco, which combined with the elevation changes requires a very specialized aerodynamic and mechanical configuration for this circuit. Turns 7 and 8 again give a view of the sea, and are also medium-low speed corners that are essential to trace well to enter the next straight with the highest possible speed.

Túnel y chicane (9-11)

Tunnel and chicane (9-11)

Turn 9 is actually a semi-straightaway or "curved straight" that is taken at full throttle and traced inside the tunnel. As I mentioned before, it is not normal to see rounded, high-speed corners on a conventional street course, which makes the Monaco track very special. Visibility when entering and exiting the tunnel is an important factor that drivers must manage in order not to be affected by the glare of the sun.

After this, there is a kind of chicane whose exit is quite narrow. This braking is crucial not to jump the limits and to enter the next straight with speed. This is the first chicane of the circuit, and we can see that it reduces the speed to the minimum to go up again until reaching the Tabac curve. This area is the first one that differs from the original layout, since this chicane was introduced decades after the beginning of this circuit. It can be noted that it is the only slow curve from turns 9 to 14.

Curva Tabac (12)

Tabac corner (12)

This is one of my favorite corners of the circuit, since it is drawn at a medium-high speed, after going through a somewhat short straight. This makes the cars brake slightly and drive at relatively high speeds. We emphasize again the fact that this curve is rounded and very fluid, unlike other urban circuits, where we would find a very pronounced 90° curve. Tabac is the prelude to the pool area.

Zona de la piscina (13-16)

The pool (13-16)

As we had already mentioned, Tabac does not significantly slow down the cars. At the same time, turns 13 and 14 correspond to a very fast and flowing chicane, if you can call it a chicane, which does not require hard braking, unlike the chicane in turn 10. It is a very fast pair of corners. Turns 13-16 were introduced to the original layout in order to "avoid" the pool that was built.

After 3 very fast turns, it is time to slow down again. Turns 15 and 16 correspond to a very slow and tight chicane, which tends to destabilize the cars a bit, making them approach the right wall at the exit of turn 16.

Últimas 3 curvas

The last 3 corners

As we see in the animated image above, the cars arrive at a sharp right turn, after going through the slow chicane. This turn 17 is somewhat difficult, as the cars must brake while they are still turning left. Then comes a very small straight where the pit entrance is located, and the last turn is somewhat tight, which does not require hard braking but must be taken carefully so as not to hit the inside wall or the outside wall at the exit of the turn.

As can be noticed, what makes the Monaco circuit special is that it has very particular characteristics, such as uphill, downhill, rounded and fast curves, and very slow curves, which added to a very narrow track with barriers on both sides, makes the drivers have to keep their concentration to the maximum during the whole race. Despite being very tight, there are not really so many slow or hard braking corners, but there are also flowing or continuous medium speed corners that require high concentration.

Since the straights are not as long, engine power is not as relevant. This is why the aerodynamic load comes into play, but above all, the driver's skills to drive the car on such a narrow track. His hands are a very valuable resource, which is why great drivers such as Ayrton Senna shone on this circuit. Rain is a factor that always adds a lot of excitement to the races in Monaco.
