The Paul Ricard circuit has hosted the Formula 1 French Grand Prix since it returned to the top category in 2018. This country had been without a place on the calendar since 2008 when it was last run at the Magny-Cours circuit. The 2018 and 2019 editions were seen as very linear races, but after not running in 2020 due to health restrictions issues, it returns in 2021 with a race that left a good taste and makes the championship red hot. We will see what characterizes this circuit from a technical point of view.

This circuit was inaugurated in 1970 and hosted Formula 1 races until 1990. We can consider this circuit as a classic circuit, with certain characteristics typical of this type of circuits of the time. We see certain similarities with circuits such as Barcelona, Portimao, Mugello, even Silverstone. It has certain medium-high speed curves, and long straights where high speeds are developed. The circuit is not so narrow, and certain modifications over time have made it a little more technical and similar to a modern circuit.

The first corner was originally a "soft" corner coming after a long straight, and the escape was short. Over time, safety modifications were made to limit the speed at which cars reach the first corner, so we now have a chicane where it is necessary to brake hard to negotiate it. This makes the circuit a bit closer to the modern style, where it is very common the presence of hard braking turns after long straights. The following video shows the start of the race aboard Kimi Raikkönen's car.

The following turns represent an area of the circuit that has remained unchanged since its construction in 1970. This area is already a bit technical, with somewhat slow corners that require good brake and throttle handling (3, 4 and 5). Turn 5 has a slight inverted camber, causing one of the car's wheels to hang in the air for a moment. This plays an important role in making turn 6 as efficient as possible. This turn 6 is crucial to face the long straight that follows, as it is easy to make a mistake there and lost the car or lose time.

Turns 8 and 9 were not in the original layout. They were introduced in 2002 to cut the long straight into 2 parts. At the same time, the circuit adds another hard braking zone, making it a bit more similar to a modern circuit. By introducing this chicane, cars no longer arrive at turn 10 with as much speed.

This turn 10 is very similar to the old Tamburello corner at Imola, where Ayrton Senna's fateful accident occurred, the difference being that we have a very large run-off and a shorter front straight. For safety reasons, it is not so common in Formula 1 to find a high-speed rounded corner after a significantly long straight.

Turn 11 is very similar to one of the corners of the Silverstone circuit. Turns 11, 12, 13 and 14 constitute a very interesting sector of rounded curves of medium speed. Several overtaking maneuvers were seen in turn 11, as it allows different lines after almost full braking. However, it is difficult to overtake in the following successions of curves, as the cars come at lower speeds and demanded looking for the ideal line to exit with more speed.

In the following image we see the comparison between the lines of Verstappen with the Red Bull and Lewis Hamilton with the Mercedes in turns 12 and 14. This line was made by both during the attack of Lewis to Max in the middle part of the race.

We can notice that the Red Bull, with more mechanical grip, was able to take advantage of the whole corner on the outside and then go to the inside only at the end. This was done by Max in order to exit with more speed at the end of the corner and avoid the approach of Lewis on the straight. Mercedes, on the other hand, did not have the same mechanical grip as Red Bull, so they opted for a higher downforce (even more than Red Bull) to be able to attack the corners more easily: Hamilton went straight to the inside edge.

The 2021 French Grand Prix provided more spectacle and excitement than previous editions, which were more linear and predictable. Why did the same circuit provide a more entertaining race this year? The answer is not so easy, there are also other variables such as the comparative level between the teams. This year things are more even among the different teams, facilitating fights on the track and the appearance of more adventurous strategies.

Another factor is the aerodynamics of the cars. This year we have a little less downforce, which makes overtaking easier. Other circuits popularly labeled as "boring" also tend to give exciting races from time to time, as is the case of the Hungaroring or Singapore. Paul Ricard is a circuit that can give exciting races, as we have seen in 2021. More than the circuit itself, there are many factors that make a race unexciting.
