Russia achieved in 2014 to get its first Formula 1 Grand Prix after 3 decades, since the Soviet Union had plans to do so but never materialized. It is located in southern Russia, a few meters from the Black Sea. It was designed, as is not unusual, by the German engineer Hermann Tilke. The presence of different sporting venues throughout the Olympic Park was a certain limitation for the design of the layout, which makes it quite interesting.

Sochi has many 90° turns and others that are very close to 90°. In addition, all and almost all of its curves are medium-low speed. It is very technical, it does not have fast sectors, but the whole circuit presents much use of the brake at medium speeds, the only fast corners are drawn at maximum speed without braking, so they do not have much importance in the aerodynamic and mechanical configuration of the car.

It has two long straights where there are overtaking possibilities. The main straight is quite long, and includes a slight curve to the right which is turn 1. The second corner is very tight, so drivers are very careful at the start of the race. The other is the back straight, from turns 11 to 14, which features two corners that are drawn at full throttle and also presents a challenge to the drivers when attempting to overtake, as they must brake while the car is leaning to one side because they are still turning left.

The rest of the straights are of a shorter length, which makes it difficult for the cars to develop overtaking possibilities on them. This is seen in several areas of the circuit, where overtaking is difficult and drivers must work very well on braking and corner exit to gain time on the driver in front. This demands very good mechanical grip from the cars. The circuit itself is like a version of the Marina Bay circuit in Singapore, but much less slow and with more space.

Many races at this circuit have been lacking in overtaking and spectacle, largely due to the dirty air the cars leave behind, making overtaking maneuvers difficult. This may change by 2022, with cars with different aerodynamics. Expectations are high that the 2022 race will be more exciting. Modern circuits could be very much in tune with the spectacle with these new cars.

We could notice this in the last corners of the circuit. These last turns are very reminiscent of IndyCar street circuits, where there is a show despite the slowness of the circuits. This last sector, which has always been an area where nobody overtakes, could have more options for this in 2022. The intermediate sector, between turns 5 and 11, is another that could become very interesting for 2022.

Overall, Sochi is a very good representation of modern circuits, the design style of several circuits that were built in the last 2 decades. Few or no level changes, medium-low speed corners, heavy or frequent braking, frequent 90° turns, slow chicanes, and very technical.

If there is one corner that is a bit out of the ordinary in this circuit (besides turn 14, where you brake with the car still spinning), it is turn 4. This curve is practically a large radius curve, where cars develop at a medium-high speed, enough to try to overtake in turn 5. It is a bit similar to curves that we could find in faster circuits. It is also one of the most spectacular curves of modern Formula 1, as it borders the Olympic square of Sochi, in a circular shape.
