Alexander Grischuk vs Fabiano Caruana, 0-1

Si no posees cuenta Hive, puedes crearla gratuitamente.

Chess Brothers League Season 3 “Master Sacrifice”

The action is back on the board! The Chess Brothers League continues. That's right, season 3 is just around the corner.

We hope you had a great start to the year and were able to recharge your batteries, as this 2022 comes loaded with plenty of chess substance here on the Hive blockchain.

It is a great pleasure for us to announce the new season that we named Master sacrifice. As we know, many games have been immortalized thanks to one or more spectacular sacrifices, and this produces a great aesthetic impression among chess enthusiasts. We want to rescue that romantic spirit with this new year and this new league.

We are very pleased to see how well received and successful this initiative has been. In the previous edition we saw how the attendance to the Sunday games was quite reciprocal. New chess players joined the chess party and not only that, but also new hivers were recruited.

As we have mentioned in previous reports, feedback from the chess community is very important to us. In principle we promote the basic aspects in terms of play, but it is the opinions and suggestions of all hivers that help us greatly to strengthen the conditions so that in this way we can provide a better competition experience.

Sacrifice in Chess

This season's theme is the spectacle of chess sacrifice, meaning, the kamikaze action of a piece, usually with a target in mind. If you want to learn more about this technical component of the game, continue reading, otherwise, go straight to the next section :)

What is a sacrifice?

When you ask a chess player, especially a championship player who has devoted much of his career to the sport of science, what chess is, he/she may compare it to life. For example, Robert "Bobby" Fischer claimed that chess was life itself, which is the most extreme version of the sentiment, but as we said, this makes some sense, since there are many aspects of the game that bear resemblance to everyday life.

For example, in life it is very difficult to think that goals can be fulfilled without giving something in return, and it is often the same in chess.

Now, in chess terms, a sacrifice occurs when a capture or move is made that involves losing a piece, often in exchange for a piece of lesser absolute value or for nothing, numerically speaking, but this action is intentional, often planned and expected to produce good results.

The larger the set of forces involved in the sacrifice (pieces sacrificed), the greater the risk of losing, but if the maneuver is successful, the player can gain a substantial material advantage or simply achieve irresistible threats to the enemy king.

Why does a sacrifice create so much euphoria?

Well, for the chess fans a successful combination always looks pretty good. It is very orderly, logical, inevitable and often difficult to detect. Hence it produces an aesthetic impression. But is that all?

No, one of the reasons behind the excitement of a sacrifice is the surprise effect. People always want to see something unexpected for good, that is unusual or atypical, and they like to see it work. This happens with chess sacrifices: they are usually unexpected or seem absurd at first and yet, if they have been calculated correctly, they work wonders against all odds.

If we review the most elementary aspects of the game, we see that the pieces have a factory value based on points, so we can logically say that there are pieces that are worth more than others in absolute terms. A rook is worth more than a bishop, a bishop is worth more than a pawn, and so on.

However, due to the complex nature of chess there are situations in which the value of the pieces is relative, that is, sometimes a pawn can become more dangerous than a queen, for example, hence more vaulable. That is why it causes us so much excitement to see a piece of lesser value beat another piece that is theoretically stronger.

Another component of emotion is the risk of your venture if you are not absolutely certain that it will work. In life, many people do not want to invest money in something uncertain, because it can go wrong and not pay dividends.

Are there dividends for making sacrifices in chess? Yes. If you have calculated accurately when sacrificing, you will often either force your opponent to return the pieces (the material) or you get a winning position that will eventually turn into checkmate.

The risk factor is associated with speculative sacrifices which, although they are not "technically correct", produce another practical effect, since they hit our opponent psychologically: It stresses you, worries you, exploits your nerves because of the short time you have on the clock, wears you down physically by forcing you to be alert, etc. It will be a real nightmare for you if the position is so complicated that you cannot find the right way to refute the sacrifice and, therefore, end up suffering the consequences of having an inferior position.

Ultimately, those are the reasons why chess piece sacrifices are exciting: they tend to go outside the expected and often create high-volatility moments. If you've calculated correctly, you'll get your way, but if you haven't, you risk losing everything.

Let's look at a masterful example of a game between Alexander Grischuk vs Fabiano Caruana, two great exponents of current world chess, who met in December last year during the World Rapid Chess Championship in Dubai.

Alexander Grischuk vs Fabiano Caruana, 0-1

Black sacrificed his queen by allowing right now 21. Ne7+, followed by 22. Nxd5. However, the incredible activity of the second army on White's monarch changes the whole picture and the pressure is unstoppable.

This is a clear example of total sacrifice, that is, giving our queen can be considered a super expensive price, but when this sacrifice is successful, the reward must be worth it and more than worth it. That was the case in this game, as Caruana took top honors by scoring the point. Take a look at the game.

Rules of Chess Brothers League Season 3

Let's take a look at what's in store for this season.

About the participation

In short: Everyone is invited to participate in this chess league! The doors are open to anyone who wishes to participate. However, as this is a competition that seeks to reward and encourage the use of the blockchain, you must have a Hive account to receive these rewards; rewards that will obviously be distributed in the tokens that this platform manages. If you do not have a Hive account, you can create one for free. You can also ask for assistance on the Chess Brothers Discord server where we will gladly assist you.

If this is your first time participating in the league, please indicate your Hive and Lichess username so we can add you to the registers. Those players who do not have a Hive account or do not indicate their Hive account will unfortunately not be eligible for the prizes.

As for the game platform, we will again use the favorite Lichess.

About the number of rounds

In this season the number of rounds remains at eight (8). That's right, eight (8) chances to win.

About the schedule

It will be played every Sunday at 17:00 GMT. Should there be any change in the schedules, the @chessbrotherspro team will notify well in advance.

As for the playing days, we have:

RoundDate
12022/1/16
22022/1/23
32022/1/30
42022/2/06
52022/2/13
62022/2/20
72022/2/27
82022/3/06

About the pairing system and time control

The CB league will be held on the Lichess platform. If you don't have an account there yet, you can take a look at this tutorial.

As for the play system and time control, only the opening tournament is defined: Swiss 3+2. The conditions for the rest of the tournaments will be decided by the community. Last season we implemented it based on voting through Dpoll and it was a success, as the chess players interact very actively with this type of activity.

As an additional point we have added a two (2) minute break between rounds. As the blitz mode is very intense and several players have made this request, we have extended this interval between games to further ensure the quality of the games.

About the scoring system

This time we will implement a scoring system where the number of points depends on the number of valid participants in each tournament. In such a way that if, for example, the tournament has 30 players who qualify to score, then:

-1st place receives 30 points.
-2nd place receives 29 points.
-3rd place receives 28 points.
-...
-29th place receives 2 points.
-30th place receives 1 point.

This system was suggested by @lighteye in an open proposal to the chess community and has already been used in the last season of the HiveChess Friday tournament. Besides the fact that it is precedent-setting, we have decided to adopt the system for two other a priori reasons:

  1. It seems to us to be a meritocratic system, since each person receives according to what he/she has done. and is not excluded from accumulating points.

  2. We believe that with this system attendance can be greatly promoted, as players will have to make an effort not to miss a round, since their position in the leaderboard can fluctuate quite a bit. Similarly, a player who has missed a round has a chance to recover if he manages to accumulate a lot of points in the next rounds.

We also specify the following:

  1. In order for a player to accumulate points per tournament, he must have played at least three (3) games in it.
  2. A played game is one in which both players have made at least one move.
  3. Players with three (3) or more games will be considered valid players and the points to be awarded are determined according to the number of them.
  4. Owning or not owning a Hive account does not invalidate players from accumulating points.
  5. If the Lichess system disqualifies a player in any of the tournaments so that the results
of that tournament are affected, the season results will be recomputed to take into account the changes.

About the tiebreak

If two or more players have the same number of points, they will be ordered according to:

  1. The lowest number of rounds played (effectiveness).
  2. The average performance.

About the prizes

In order for a player to qualify for any of the prizes he/she must:

  1. Possess a Hive account.
  2. In case he does not appear in the list of pre-registered and called-up players, the
    player must register
by posting a comment in one of the posts about the season.
  3. Have played at least 50% of the season, which in this case is 4 rounds. "Have played" here means to be a valid player according to the previous section on the scoring system.

The prize fund will be pooled from the liquid rewards received from the reports that we will be posting weekly, one for each round of the season.

As for the prize categories, we have two types: Absolute Top and Special Prizes. In the latter group we find the prizes for: a) The most beautiful sacrifice, b) The greatest upset and c) The best post.

90% of the rewards obtained in the league's weekly report posts (the liquid part in HBD) will be destined to the general award, distributed according to the previously explained parameters. The remaining 10% will be distributed among the special prizes at a rate of 3.33% each.

TOP N 🏆🏆

As we said, 90% of the funds will be distributed to all players with Hive accounts who have participated in the season for at least four (4) rounds. Last time we had 25 hivers chess players who met those requirements and eight (8) were awarded in the overall standings (excluding special prize winners). With this new proposal, all 25 would receive awards.

To ensure a meritocratic and encouraging distribution, the number of points accumulated and the position held will be taken into account, so that each person receives rewards
proportionally to this factor.

Prizes will, of course, be distributed at the end of the season.

The most beautiful sacrifice 🔆🔆

Of course it is! The most spectacular sacrifice in the league will be taken into account. We must honor the name of this season, right? Well, at the end of the tournaments our analysis team will evaluate the games and then the verdict will be given for the game that has raised the most expectations by means of some material sacrifice. The winning game will be announced at the end of the season and the player who made the sacrifice will be awarded.

The greatest upset 😮😮

We decided to keep this prize introduced in the previous season. Any player who manages to beat an opponent whose rating is much higher will be rewarded, because in chess you have to value progress and this is an excellent way to encourage all chess players of any level.

At the end of the league, the data will be computed to extract the rating differences between the players of all the games played. The game with the highest difference will be awarded and the winner will be the player with the lowest rating, logically. One last restriction is that the game must be played, that is to say, it must have been played naturally and not won by forfeit. Let's remember that it is about "the greatest upset". Let's keep that spirit.

The winning game will be announced at the end of the season and a prize will be awarded to the winner.

The best post 🧾🧾

To reward participation and the creation of chess content we want to reward those hivers who make a post about it. In it you can analyze a game of the league, stream the tournament, analyze the results, make predictions of the future winners, in short, we would like to see your imagination in action, always with a sportmanship spirit.

You can post one article per round. To participate you must share the link to your post in the weekly league reports that are posted with this account (@Chessbrotherspro).

Selected posts will be supported with upvotes and the most elaborate article will additionally receive 3.33% of the funds at the end of the league. Of course, super creative work will be rewarded. The author of the post must have played in a minimum of four (4) rounds to be eligible for the prize.

0agregame estos 2 min al juego, y entre ellos que sea 0
