3.000 frustraciones... // 3,000 frustrations... [ESP/ENG] || OPINION

      Para cualquier pelotero, solo existe una frustración más grande que un outfielder le robe un jonrón capturando ante un batazo, una pelota pegado a la cerca de un salto. Esa frustración se llama el ponche. Tiene que ver con la naturaleza de su trabajo. Son personas que se entrenan desde niños para golpear una bola. No importa las veces que tenga que hacerlo. Firma un contrato de ligas mayores por una promesa a realizar. Y es un compromiso mayor, si su palabra entregada no la honra devolviendo lanzamientos de los pitchers a campo de nadie.

For any ballplayer, there is only one frustration greater than an outfielder stealing a home run by catching a ball hit to the fence on a hop. That frustration is called the strikeout. It has to do with the nature of their job. These are people who have been training since they were kids to hit a ball. It doesn't matter how many times you have to do it. You sign a major league contract because of a promise to perform. And it's a bigger commitment if your given word is not honored by returning balls from pitchers to nobody's field.

Likewise, a pitcher signs a major league contract by delivering a promise: to make the guy standing at home plate miss as many times as possible. And for the most part of the time, the latter fulfill their contract with less frustration than the former. This is because of statistics. Just as hitters train to hit, the pitcher trains to pitch. What happens is that there are many more resources to vary the type of pitch than to hit it. That is why only 3 out of 10 pitches are returned as unstoppable at best if the hitter is very good.

And within the context described, the strikeout is the superior demonstration of the art of pitching and the worst frustration of the art of hitting. The counterpart of this would be the home run. But let's not talk about him. Let's talk about the second man who has bought the ticket to immortality this season, after Miguel Cabrera: Max Scherzer. A major player in the Dodgers' pursuit of the Giants for the NL East pennant, the guy reached 3,000 strikeouts at home yesterday and became the 19th man in major league history to accomplish the feat.

The 37-year-old right-hander, a native of St. Louis, Missouri, crowns a career that has seen him have some exciting moments: after just two years with Arizona when he debuted in 2008, the team that picked him in the college draft and developed him in the minor leagues, he jumped six seasons with the Detroit Tigers on that team that was crowned several times in the American Central Division at the beginning of the 2010s, and then went to Washington for another six and a half seasons, crowning the 2019 season with a World Series ring.

In the middle of this season he was traded to the Dodgers in the crazy trades that took place before the magic date of July 31 and the rest has been history: 6 wins, no losses and 0.88% of clean runs allowed per 9 innings pitched, with 72 strikeouts in 51 complete innings of work. Yesterday, before the start of the game, he was 6 innings short of the magic number and threw a gem in the fifth inning with the most important strikeout of his career.

The guy pitched a perfect game before he was hit by a double in the eighth inning. That was the only hit allowed and the closer got the job done to win the game with a shutout. Let's just say it was a little payback for Eric Hosmer for being the victim who never wants to appear in the history books. A three (3) Cy young winner, Scherzer could now give chase to 4,000 strikeouts if he stays healthy.

The last two pitchers to accomplish the feat were Justin Verlander and C.C. Sabathia in 2019. Both pitchers are also, future occupants of a place in Cooperstown, NY. Six times called to the All-Star game, Max had a sublime encounter. A sort of heavenly sound he heard as he got closer and closer to the number, and no, it wasn't the crowd yelling at him when he put in two strikes on his opponent. It was the sound of a batter's jaw, clenched in frustration after each strikeout.
