¡Comodines al rojo vivo..! // Red hot wildcards...! [ESP/ENG] | OPINION

When commissioner Bud Selig introduced the wild card back in 1994, many baseball purists screamed their heads off. They had no idea what this visionary man was up to. The original idea was to give more opportunity to teams that were left out of the postseason, having had very positive records. That is, they had played to qualify, only that the division leader would pass and they would go to the dressing rooms to cry for lack of a place in the play-offs. The wildcard corrects this.

The reason for the creation of such a figure had to do with how the divisions were formed, where teams from large markets were left with a loss of income at the end of the season. An example of this: When the Yankees went through, the Red Sox were out and vice versa. Another example: When the Los Angeles Dodgers qualified, San Francisco lost the opportunity to generate revenue via the postseason. Remember my dear reader: it's a business and Bud Selig knew this very well. This year will mark 26 years since the venture was first tried and more than half of the time, New York or Boston have entered the year-end party this way.

That said, the figure has worked and baseball has become more exciting as the end of each season approaches. A slight modification to the wild card figure meant that two teams instead of one have the opportunity to play an extra game. It is the teams with the fourth and fifth-best records in each league when the 162nd game is played to mark the end of the season. And boy, has this season been red hot, giving five teams in the American League and six teams in the National League a close chance to qualify.

With yesterday's results in hand and 18 days remaining in the playoffs, the American League is in a three-way tie at the top of the wild card standings, with wins by Boston and New York and a loss by the Toronto Blue Jays. With Tampa Bay on the run, the fight between these three teams is to the death. A little further back is the Seattle Mariners and Oakland Athletics, who will need a real miracle to get in. But they will have to improve a lot and hope for losses among the top teams.

Two weeks ago](https://peakd.com/hive-189157/@fermionico/cuales-seran-los-comodines-what-will-be-the-wildcards-espeng-or-or-opinion) we wrote some predictions that now seem unclear. The Blue Jays have entered the fray buoyed by Vladimir Guerrero Jr. who is also fighting for the triple batting crown. In other words, we thought the Yankees and Boston were a lock. However, they added the bluebirds aided by Boston's apparent slowdown. Right now, I'd bet that extra game will be between the Manhattan Mules (as NY is also called) and Toronto; however, Boston's pitching continues to look strong and the Mariners have spun a dream September to put themselves seriously in the fight. There is no clear favorite.

In the National League, the outlook is even more complicated, because even the New York Mets, who had been ruled out by me, have made their presence felt in the final stretch. Sure, they are a little retired, but the numbers give them a fighting chance. Meanwhile, the Phillies have remembered how to play baseball and have also entered the fray. Two teams, however, I see them as contenders only because of their inconsistency. Serious contenders would be San Diego (who has been deflating, as Tatis Jr. has shown fatigue), Cincinnati (who tightened the pace, if you read my previous post, where I gave them little chance), St. Louis and with the Dodgers already qualified with a spot to be defined ( whether division champion or player of game 163).

To be quite frank with my readers, I didn't see the St. Louis Cardinals coming. They're not even listed as contenders in the above write-up. As it turns out, they have played like heroes to get into the fight. Right now they would be the Dodgers' contenders if everything stays as is. But baseball is a game where many are called and few make it into the postseason hall. With so many teams giving chase to St. Louis should I give it as a lock, when I didn't even consider it as a contender in my previous writing on the matter? What do you think my dear reader? Write in the comments, how do you think it will end. In the meantime, we can only say that the fight for the wild cards is red hot!
