El último turno al bate... [ESP] // The last turn at bat... [ENG] || HISTORIAS ANIVERSARIAS

It was a great late summer Sunday afternoon in Los Angeles. The Dodger Stadium had the parking lot half full and it would not go beyond that, because the home team was already almost eliminated from any possibility and not even a miracle could make that change; come on, this is the Major Leagues, here you are consistent or you spend the beginning of the fall at home. Therefore, the players dressed reluctantly with the only incentive of seeing batting their leader and captain for many years, in the last game for him.

The veteran star had announced that Sunday he would play for the last time, even though there were 10 days left on the schedule, because he wanted to give a chance to the team's emerging kids. Those he had been advising during the season to languish. That was the role he had played, returning the courtesy received 22 seasons ago, when he himself was a rookie with a chance to fulfill his dreams.

Nothing like the smell of wet grass that lingered in the air, despite eight innings played, as he headed to the batter's box thinking about what the opposing pitcher would throw at him. It was automatic: Will he come with a curve on the first pitch? I don't think he'll dare, he said to himself, a pitcher wouldn't do that with the bases loaded and me meaning the run to leave them on the ground he finished. And he was right, they would most likely throw him a straight to open the inning.

So he prepared himself to wait for the straight, conditioned the dirt in the batter's box with his spikes, crossed a few kind words with the umpire, who acknowledged his valuable career and was saying goodbye, finally, he turned his eyes to the pitcher swinging in preparation. The pitcher checked his catcher's signs and took his foot out of his windup, to calm his nerves while the veteran's nerves were frayed Did he regret the straight? he thought. Nothing. He had to pitch and went back into the pitching box.

The tension in the atmosphere was at its peak when the ball left the pitcher's hand and exploded in the catcher's pet, but not before he had completely fooled the veteran with a quick curve and the latter swing at him to the bleachers. There was silence in the stadium, it was evident why the ballplayer had to retire. And it was unfortunate. For many years he had been the man who solved the games in favor of his team. And to see him fail like that was painful.

The catcher returned the ball to the pitcher and the pitcher received it with a smile on his face. He started the sign check again and the veteran to get ready: a straight one is coming, he thought. The pitcher did the windup and threw a shrapnel, the batter swung again and touched the ball: foul called the umpire. New ball for the pitcher, who received it and started rubbing it off the pitching mound. Meanwhile, millions of probabilities were going through the batter's head, They already had him at two strikes!

The next day the veteran woke up in a Los Angeles clinic, the stress had been too much for him and he had collapsed in the batter's box in front of thousands of spectators with a heart attack. His replacement had been the star rookie of the ninth, who had thrown it out of the stadium with a mile-long home run to leave the opponent on the field. Only providence knows why he was not chosen for that result.
