Un Cy Young en Texas [ESP] // [ENG] A Cy Young in Texas || OPINION

No señor.

It took twenty-four (24) hours just for the pandemic to continue. Yes, the pandemic of no-hitters in the major leagues. But this wasn't a no-no from some unknown pitcher. No sir. It was a gem pitched by Corey Kluber, a starter for the New York Yankees, a two-time winner of the Cy Young Award, an award given to the best pitchers each season in the major leagues. "Klubot", as his teammates call him, had a flawless night in Arlington and only a base on balls separated him from perfection.

Imagine the dominance that the guy has had this season, that the board showed a collective average of .253 of the opponents' at-bats before the game. A minuscule figure if you understand that the season is just beginning and the pitchers have just 45 days to make the necessary adjustments. But as we reiterated in the previous publication, we already know what is happening in the majors and it seems to be the year of the pitchers.

Texas, Cleveland and Seattle have been the victims this season of the six no-hitters so far this season. If the hitters' drought and the pitchers' no-hitter pace continue, we could be talking about a new record of such games by the end of the season, surpassing the eight (8) dating back to 1884.

Kluber threw 101 pitches to the plate and Gleyber Torres, who had started at shortstop, was covering second base at the moment the last batter swung at second for the final out of the game. At the end of the celebration, the award-winning pitcher declared: "Evidently, I would have liked not to give a base on balls to a batter in four consecutive innings" meaning the only error made in the third inning that separated him from the perfect game, such was his dominance.

At thirty-five (35) years old he is quite the veteran with 11 seasons in the majors, most of his career was played in Cleveland (one of three teams to have received two no-hitters) where he won the Cy Young a couple of times in 2014 and 2017. Last season cut short by the pandemic, he was signed with Texas but only had a one-inning appearance before getting injured (he was let go by another of the teams victimized by no-hitters) and landed in the big apple for the running season.

The last game of this guy pitched for the Yankees was by David Cone last century and Corey sharpened his arm to the point that 71 of his 101 pitches landed in the strike zone, over 70% effective in the zone, isn't that remarkable? It's as if Kluber took a second wind for his already extraordinary career. Unfortunately, he was late to the Major Leagues, because we are sure he could have made the numbers for the hall of fame, who knows? Maybe his career will be extended.

What we are sure of is that Corey can sleep easy because his performance has been enough for the Yankees to be there, in the fight for the American East pennant, along with Boston and Tampa Bay. A division that will require his arm to keep the Bronx among the contenders. And like Cone in 1999, he will have to honor the accolades he has earned.
