Para entender un poco el catastrófico fichaje de Coutinho por el Barsa, y parte de la debacle económica y deportiva del club de la ciudad condal en los últimos años, hay que ubicarse en un hecho clave que precedió tal transferencia: la venta de Neymar al PSG en el verano de 2017. Esta operación le reportó al club catalán la jugosa cantidad de 220 millones de dólares (una cifra récord para una venta del club culé). Con este dinero y sin una planificación deportiva adecuada, el club salió a la búsqueda desesperada de un remplazo para el jugador brasileño, y desembolsó 160 millones en el Coutinho quien era el mejor jugador de la liga inglesa en ese entonces. El resultado, luego de cuatro años, ya lo conocemos: pobre rendimiento, cesiones y una posible venta. Falta de Planificación Deportiva

Cuando Neymar deja el Barsa, el club catalán se quedó sin una de sus máximas figuras en el letal tridente de ataque que conformaban el brasileño con Suarez y Messi. Neymar era un jugador decisivo e importante en el club, pues se entendía a la perfección con sus compañeros de la delantera y aportaba goles con ese instinto goleador que tiene (o tenía?). Así, con su salida, el club perdía un valor incalculable en su ofensiva. Perdía goles, juego y efectividad en el ataque, y lo más importante, perdía la posibilidad de aspirar a títulos, cosa que en la actualidad aún el Barsa resiente. Asimismo, perdía el club a esa “joven” estrella quien venía a convertirse en el sucesor de Messi, no solo en el campo, sino fuera de éste, siendo la eterna promesa a balón de oro.

A la salida de Neymar, se le sumó la salida de Andrés Iniesta quien anunciaba que dejaba el club en el verano de 2018. El club se veía obligado a buscar a los “sucesores” de estas estrellas. Necesitaba fichar a un delantero con juego asociativo y manejo del balón en espacios reducidos y con mucho gol. Del mismo modo, requería un organizador de juego que supliese el vacío dejado por Iniesta. Coutinho no pudo ser ni lo uno, ni lo otro. Desafortunadamente.

En el Barcelona de Valverde, Coutinho jugaba a la izquierda de los tres delanteros. Es decir, de extremo izquierdo. El problema de esta posición era que jugaba en el espacio de Jordi Alba. Recordemos que Jordi Alba era uno de los mejores socios y asistidores de Messi y la banda izquierda es su dominio. La presencia de Coutinho allí limitaba muchísimo el juego del lateral izquierdo y rompía la conexión Messi-Alba que tantos réditos había dado al equipo. Esto lo obligaba a ubicarse la derecha. Esto era peor , ya que se molestaba con Lionel Messi y no podía despejar su juego de creador de juego, ni de chutar a larga distancia, ni entrar por izquierda y romper hacia el centro, ni disparar a larga distancia como lo hacía en el Liverpool.

En búsqueda de un mejor lugar para el jugador, Coutinho fue movido a la posición de interior. Allí habría tenido su propio espacio para operar, sin molestarse con Alba ni Messi. Esta ubicación mejoró un poco el rendimiento del brasileño, pues tuvo mayor espacio para correr, chutar de afuera (su mejor cualidad) y logró recuperar su capacidad de pasador y creador de juego. Sin embargo, este nuevo rol de Coutinho en esta posición también expuso sus carencias defensivas. por lo que poco a poco perdió protagonismo con jugadores más físicos como Arturo Vidal y Arthur. Esta falta de juego y rendimiento positivo causo su cesión al Bayer de Munich.

En su regreso a Barcelona, Coutinho tuvo un comienzo de temporada positivo con Koeman; sin embargo, una lesión en su rodilla le hizo perder protagonismo con su reemplazo Pedri. Pedri le quitó el puesto ya que el canario y su juego era lo que necesitaba el Barsa. Pedri es un volante , y un volante era lo que necesitaba el Barsa cuando salieron Neymar y principalmente Iniesta. Coutinho es un hacedor de juego y en el Barcelona no necesitaba un jugador con esas características. El Barcelona requería de un volante o media punta. Además, ningún entrenador iba a bajar a Messi para pasarle balones a Coutinho. Eso no iba a suceder.

Así, finalmente después de cuatro años de fracaso, el club catalán ya parece que logrará cerrar el capítulo Coutinho definitivamente. Según comunicado del club, ya existe un acuerdo de compra del jugador por parte del Aston Villa. El equipo inglés se hará definitivamente con los servicios del brasileño por 20 millones de dólares (la apuesta inicial del barsa era de 40 millones) y cediendo el 50 % de una posible venta futura del jugador.
