ewis Hamilton wins at Silverstone and gets his 8th victory at this circuit in F1.

Moment in which the Hamilton and Verstappen cars meet at the Silverstone Grand Prix.

In all sports, combativeness is a virtue. In some of them it is necessary to know how to control it. In others, on the other hand, it can be given more freedom of action.

The current Formula 1, super technological and super fast, gives little margin for mistakes. That are paid with a very high price in terms of results. And in other cases putting at risk one's own life.

Verstappen, at present, as was Hamilton in recent years, Leclerc in 2020 and Vettel on several occasions are combative drivers, irruentes, in which the word speculation does not enter.

A few days ago I published a post remembering and paying tribute to a driver who is still today a symbol of Ferrari: Niki Lauda, master in the management of races and machines, concentration and total self-control. If coming second or third was a good result, he accepted it without risking more than necessary. And so he won races and world titles with "normal" machines. When the dominance of F1 was far from what it is now.

These reflections and this reasoning have no place in the four drivers mentioned above. And that is why they are direct participants in more than one accident. Leaving aside who is to blame. Today they will be of one and in the next GP they will be of another. For them winning or winning is everything. And as long as the car's engine revs up, they will continue to demand more and more from it. It is enough to look at the past of any of these drivers. Today Verstappen is under the spotlight because he is the driver of the moment. That's the only reason. Because he tries to win at all costs. And because he has a machine that allows them to risk beyond the plausible.

But it is a rule that Hamilton, with his accumulated experience and his world titles won, does not escape either. It's a question of racing DNA.

At the Baku GP (Azerbaijan) Verstappen broke a tire, kicking his anger out on his car. Hamilton had everything he needed to start calmly behind Perez and regain the championship lead. There were only a couple of laps to go. It was a matter of normal management.

However, in his excessive eagerness to win, he went too long in the corner and ended up in the last positions with no chance to recover.

The Silverstone GP, a turning point.

The accident between Verstappen and Hamilton made the race easier for Leclerc, who was able to lead Ferrari up to two laps from the end.

The British GP, a circuit much loved by Hamilton, apart from his nationality, since he has obtained a singular number of victories in it: no less than seven, it was a fundamental test of a season that had started in an irregular way to start He slowly and gradually increased a decline that was going to bring him to be 32 points behind Verstappen.

If the Dutchman still managed to get a sizable window out of the British GP, the Briton's hopes of repeating the title would begin to fade.

For this reason, he prepared himself in the best way for this race. Spending several days in the Mercedes factory with technicians and mechanics trying to fill that advantage that Red Bull had them. And, to a certain extent, they had already achieved it in Friday's tests, in the first free practice sessions, when he had obtained the best time for the sprint race, the newness that F1 is incorporating this year as a test - to be disputed on Saturday replacing the traditional three qualifying rounds on Saturday.

But in the sprint race Verstappen managed (starting from behind the Briton) to expose one of his weaknesses: the games. He overcame it and came first in the final sprint to claim pole position despite continued lunges from Hamilton trying to regain the lost position.

La carrera. / The race.

With two laps to go Hamilton manages to pass Leclerc and win the Silverstone GP for the 8th time.

Perhaps few would imagine that the same situation, but on the contrary, it would be verified in the long run of the Grand Prix.

Verstappen that part is not quite right. Hamilton who overtakes the machine at just the right moment and thus curves and curves one glued to the other covered three kilometers of the circuit.

Hamilton because he knew it was the only chance to beat Verstappen. And this, because he had no intention of making himself overcome, although logic advised him to take things more calmly. In an accident you never know who may bear the brunt.

And the touch, in the end a logical consequence in such a fierce fight, came. Verstappen ended up against the retaining wall suffering a severe blow (physical and moral), Hamilton was able to continue, the race was temporarily suspended and at the restart he did what prudence advised.

It began to regain positions and showed that Mercedes had really improved a lot over its previous performance.

He served the imposed penalty of 10 seconds in the first Pit Stop and from fifth position began to make up ground until he reached Leclerc and overcome it with extreme ease with two laps remaining.

In a totally strategic move, Red Bull brought in Checo Pérez (who was on the edge of the points zone) to change tires and get the extra point that Hamilton had achieved with the fastest lap.

Perhaps the world championship of Formula 1 drivers at the end of the season will end up being defined by a few points and these points that for now mean little and nothing will end up being worth gold.

Red Bull knows it. And Mercedes too. It will be necessary to see if in the future its two pilots who aspire to the title understand it (or not) in the same way.

The spectacularity in the next Formula 1 races will show us which of the two theories ends up dominating the second part of the championship.

For now, thanks to Verstappen and Hamilton, the show - at least - is assured.

Sprint Race, la novedad. / Sprint Race, the novelty.

In the previous paragraph I alluded to the so-called "Sprint Race" and mentioned it as a novelty. But, in reality, what is it?

Actually it is a mini-race to give more excitement to the day before the race. It is 100 kms in 25-30 minutes of running.

In this first test of Great Britain there were 17 laps to complete the 100 kms and the winner - in this case Verstappen took 3 points, Hamilton second took 2 and Bottas third 1.

The starting order of this mini-race had been established with the times of Friday, in which Hamilton had dominated, beaten at the start by Verstappen who thus won the pole for Sunday.

The same order of finish will also be respected for Sunday's starting grid.

El resto. / The rest.

The rest of the teams and drivers could not dissociate themselves too much from what they have seen in the last GP.

McLaren's slow and constant improvement is impressive. Ferrari's performance is more due to circuits that suit their machines than to a real and effective improvement in their performance.

At driver level, the decline of Sainz at Ferrari and Perez at Red Bull, who seem to move further and further away from the performance of their teammates, is striking.

Valteri Bottas, on the other hand, after a gloomy period, seems to have been revitalized after the voices that said that his replacement in the team for next year by Norris was a certainty.

Mundial de Pilotos. / Drivers' World Championship.

F1 World Drivers' Championship standings after the British GP.

Until the Silverstone race Verstappen had accumulated a more than consistent lead. That has been almost annulled. The 32 points that separated the two have now been reduced to just 8.

The Dutchman took the 3 points from the Race Sprint while Hamilton took 27 points from his victory plus the two points for second place in the Sprint Race.

At the halfway point of the championship the situation between the two in terms of points is (almost) absolute parity.

Mundial de Constructores. / Constructors' World Championship.

The positions in the Constructors' World Championship after the British GP.

Also in the Constructors' World Championship, Red Bull suffered a hard blow. Just as in the Drivers' World Championship, the balance of power in this classification has become more equal than ever since the start of the season with the results at Silverstone.

289 to 295 in favor of Red Bull. Practically nothing. Only 4 points separate the main contenders. A world championship more open than ever. Where it will be essential not to make mistakes.
