Con el advenimiento de los deportes de interés popular como lo son el fútbol y las apenas terminadas Eurocopa (ganada por Italia) y Copa América (ganada por Argentina), el desarrollo relativamente normal de la Fórmula 1 y de la Moto GP junto a la lenta reanudación de otras disciplinas deportivas nos habíamos olvidado (por así decirlo) de lo que es sin lugar a dudas (y preferencias deportivas aparte) la máxima manifestación deportiva a nivel mundial: los Juegos Olímpicos postergados en su momento y que comenzarán (en sordina porque la promoción ha sido escasa en todos los medios) a partir del próximo 23 de Julio en Tokio (Japón).

En principio los Juegos debían realizarse entre el el 24 de julio y el 9 de agosto de 2020, es decir hace exactamente un año.
Las primeras representaciones en negarse a concurrir fueron Australia y Canadá aduciendo que se estaba en pleno rebrote de la pandemia.
Esto motivó que el primer ministro de Japón junto al presidente del COI (Comité Olímpico Internacional) decidieran aplazar los juegos para el 2021 manteniendo el nombre de "Juegos Olímpicos de Tokyo 2020".
Este modo particular de respetar el logo y el nombre original del evento también fue observado por la UEFA en la Eurocopa que apenas acaba de terminar.
En efecto, a pesar de haberse realizado entre junio y julio de 2021 por las razones sanitarias de público conocimiento siguió conservando su nombre original: Eurocopa 2020.
En un continuo ir y venir de versiones (no confirmadas ni tampoco desmentidas) se llegó a sostener a inicios de este año que el gobierno japonés en reunión secreta había resuelto anular los Juegos.
Por este motivo rápidamente los EE. UU. salieron a presentarse como alternativa para la realización de los mismos en el estado de Florida. Las autoridades japonesas desmintieron categóricamente su negativa confirmando la realización de los mismos en las fechas preestablecidas.
En su momento el comité organizador tomó la decisión de reintegrar el valor de las entradas adquiridas con anticipación pero no así otros costos como hoteles reservados, lo que dio origen a un sinfin de polémicas.
Una creciente ola de descontento popular y miedo de la población local al efecto que podría tener la afluencia en masa de turistas y aficcionados extranjeros llevó al gobierno de Japón a prohibir el ingreso de los mismos.
"En muchos sentidos, los Juegos de Tokio 2020 serán completamente diferentes a los Juegos anteriores. Sin embargo, lo esencial de los Juegos se mantendrá sin cambios", afirmó Seiko Hashimoto, presidenta del Comité Tokio 2020.
El pebetero olímpico se encenderá el 23 de julio de 2021 en el Estadio Olímpico de Tokio sin público extranjero. A pesar de ser esta la fecha designada como inaugural en realidad los Juegos comenzarán un par de días antes con las competencias de sóftbol femenino en la fase de grupos en el Estadio de Fukushima (Azuma).
La Ceremonia de Clausura será el domingo 8 de agosto.
The Games were originally scheduled to take place between July 24 and August 9, 2020, exactly one year ago.
The first representatives to refuse to attend were Australia and Canada, arguing that the pandemic was in full swing.
This prompted the Prime Minister of Japan and the President of the IOC (International Olympic Committee) to decide to postpone the Games to 2021, keeping the name "Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games".

At the time, the organizing committee decided to reimburse the value of tickets purchased in advance, but not other costs such as hotel reservations, which gave rise to endless controversy.
A growing wave of popular discontent and fear among the local population of the effect that the mass influx of foreign tourists and fans could have led the Japanese government to ban their entry.
"In many ways, the Tokyo 2020 Games will be completely different from previous Games. However, the essentials of the Games will remain unchanged," said Seiko Hashimoto, chairwoman of the Tokyo 2020 Committee.
The Olympic cauldron will be lit on July 23, 2021 at the Tokyo Olympic Stadium without a foreign audience. Although this is the designated opening date, the Games will actually begin a couple of days earlier with women's softball competitions in the group stage at the Fukushima (Azuma) Stadium.
The Closing Ceremony will be held on Sunday, August 8.

Si hay algo que provoca polémica en los Juegos son las disciplinas que el COI considera olímpicas y cuáles no. Un ejemplo emblemático es el ajedrez.
Por ese motivo y debido a la flexibilidad del máximo organismo rector de los Juegos Olímpicos se han incoporado en estos Juegos algunas disciplinas deportivas por primera vez. Y otras probablemente se irán incorporando en futuros Juegos.
En Tokio 2020 harán su debut el karate (no es una casualidad que debute en Japón con una fuerte presión de la Federación local de este deporte), el surf y el skate entre otros que se agregan a una disciplina ya existente. Como el BMX freestyle, el básquet 3x3 y otros eventos en diversos deportes.
La lucha libre y la lucha grecorromana que pensaban ser excluídas al final fueron dejadas.
