Good evening dear Hivers of this beautiful community called Full Deportes.

Today we had the closing of groups A and B, in which the first 4 teams to advance to the Round of 16 of the World Cup in Qatar were decided.

On this occasion I will be analyzing the two matches I saw, which I thought were the most interesting of the day: Ecuador vs Senegal and USA vs Iran. Both matches decided who would make it to the next phase.

Ecuador vs Senegal

The team led by Argentine coach Gustavo Alfaro had a great opportunity to reach the Round of 16 of the World Cup for the first time since Germany 2006, when they lost 1-0 to England.

Today they faced Senegal, a team that came to this competition as the champion of the African continent, logically led by their star player and national pride, Sadio Mané. The absence of Bayern Munich's Senegalese striker was a hard blow for their national team, a blow that I must say, they have been able to assimilate in a great way. In the first instance they played a very good match against the Netherlands, but they could not keep their concentration at the end conceding two goals that seemed more than excessive punishment. In the second match, they dominated at ease against a host team that went through this competition without glory.

And today came the day of the most decisive duel, that match that as soon as the World Cup draw was over, both teams marked it on the calendar as if it were the most important match in the group for the aspirations of both teams. Ecuador, with a draw, would qualify for the next stage, while the Senegalese were obliged to win in order to qualify for the Round of 16.

La 'Tri' took the field with its characteristic 4-4-2 formation with the following players: Galíndez in goal; Preciado, Félix Torres, Piero Hincapié and Estupiñán in defense; in the midfield Carlos Gruezo would replace the suspended Jhegson Méndez to play alongside Moisés Caicedo, on the wings Gonzalo Plata and Alan Franco; and up front Michael Estrada alongside captain Enner Valencia.

From the beginning of the match, the Senegalese came out with everything in search of the three points that would allow them to advance to the next round. The strategy used by Aliou Cissé was to exploit the Ecuadorian flanks to prevent them from getting forward. Ismaila Sarr had a great game in this sense, Angelo Preciado could not contain the constant attacks from the flanks of the fast Senegalese winger who was one of the stars of the match. Near the end of the first half, Sarr himself was fouled inside the box by Piero Hincapie who arrived late to cross. The same Watford player placed the penalty with great class to the left of the goalkeeper Galindez, fooling him completely.

Ecuador came out for the second half with a different face, the attempts on the wings with Estupiñán and Preciado were more fluid, the question was how difficult it was to pass those 2 lines of 4 planted in the middle of the field and very well together. In view of this, the set piece is a vital weapon to unblock this type of system, and 'La Tri' took advantage of it very well. In the 67th minute, Félix Torres headed a corner kick that Moisés Caicedo ended up connecting at the far post for the equalizer and the momentary joy of the Ecuadorians in the match. The hard part was that 2 minutes later, in a free kick that Gustavo Alfaro's team should not have given, the Senegalese took advantage of a bad clearance by Enner Valencia that fell to Koulibaly for the definitive 1-2 in the match. Senegal was better throughout the match, Ecuador never showed what it did against the Netherlands or Qatar. In the end 'La Tri' leaves eliminated and with the feeling that they could have given a little more. But this is not the end for them, they have very young players and can show a better version for the next World Cup. This competition is like that, even if you play 2 matches at a high level, in the end the mistakes take their toll, and today Ecuador went out very sleepy to play the game, and I must say that they never found themselves on the court.

A duel that, beyond the extra-football, was a match to decide who would advance to the next stage. The Iranians were coming from a heart-stopping 2-0 win over the Welsh national team, which they settled in stoppage time. While the Stars and Stripes were coming into this match with a 0-0 draw against England. Iran, with a draw, had already qualified for the Round of 16, while the North Americans had to win to advance.

The team led by Christian Pulisic was far superior in this match, perhaps not so much from the scoreboard but from the game. Juventus midfielder Weston McKennie proved today to be the player with the most quality in the midfield, providing a deep pass to Sergiño Dest, who headed the ball to Pulisic for the only goal of the match. The United States has very young and interesting players, players with a lot of imbalance such as the left back Robinson or the striker Timothy Weah. In addition to the contribution of the very good midfielder belonging to Valencia, Yunus Musah, player who today turned 20 years old and is one of the revelations of this World Cup, a great player.

The United States advanced to the next round and their opponent will be the Netherlands of Louis Van Gaal and company. It will be a very interesting duel, not only because it will be the Round of 16, but also because I believe that the North Americans will give the upset to an Orange team that has left more doubts than certainties.

On the other side, Senegal will be facing England.

With this we now have the first two World Cup Round of 16 matches. Tomorrow, groups C and D will be decided, where all the flashes will be on the match between Poland and Argentina to see who will go through to the next round or if both can go through directly depending on some other result.
