No fue un buen inicio de Champions League para el Manchester United y el Barcelona, a priori dos de los potenciales animadores en esta edición de la Champions League.
El primero llegaba con la ilusión de celebrar el regreso de su hijo pródigo Cristiano Ronaldo quien después de años volvía a vestirse la casa de los "Red Devils" y a fuerza de fútbol y goles volver a tener el protagonismo en Champions que en las últimas temporadas le había faltado. Para el Barcelona la situación era distinta. Con profundas divergencias a nivel dirigencial-técnico la vuelta de Joan Laporta como presidente no significó dejar a la institución en mejores condiciones de lo que había hecho Bartomeu. Con un profundo déficit económico, con jugadores en el ocaso de sus carreras y sin la posibilidad de invertir fuertes sumas en contrataciones, Ronald Koeman -también el DT sumamente cuestionado. ha tenido que acudir a los jévenes del semillero catalán, a las promesas de la "Massia". Sin embargo da la impresión que este Manchester gira demasiado alrededor del jugador portugués. Por más calidad que tenga los deiz jugadores restantes deben acoplarse en un funcionamiento armónico. Caso contrario se arriesgan, él y su equipo, a correr la misma suerte que con la Juventus de Italia.
