Evidently, this European Championship is one of the most surprising in recent years.

The fact that Germany, France, Portugal and the Netherlands have already been eliminated in the round of 16 is not unusual.

All of them candidates (almost) obliged to win the title.

Evidently, the strategy adopted by some coaches of teams that were not - a priori - among the candidates, has given excellent results.

For this reason, to speak of a logical candidate is more of a shot in the dark than a concrete assumption.

If we analyze the initial group stage (and for this I have brought you the image) and compare with those that reached the quarterfinals we will see that:

  • In group A survive only Italy, -no wonder since it was the first classified with an excellent performance- and a surprising Switzerland.
  • From group B there are Belgium and Denmark, perhaps the group where logic has been applied with the greatest naturalness.
  • From group C one of the surprises has passed: Ukraine, perhaps the least expected.
  • In group D England and Czech Republic have survived, also it is possible to agree with a minimum of logic.
  • In Group E, only Spain remains.
  • In group F, the so-called "group of death" there is no one left.

But to get to this stage, let's first take a look at what happened in the last round of 16.

INGLATERRA 2 - ALEMANIA 0 / ENGLAND 2 - GERMANY 0

21.-Octavos-England2-Germany0.banner.png

Una sorprendente Inglaterra eliminó a Alemania. / A surprising England eliminated Germany.

Centro a mitad altura.

England players celebrate their place in the quarterfinals.

Although we are forced to accept as a general rule that in this European Championship matches are defined in the last moments of the game (or at least in the last quarter of an hour) if not in stoppage time, we cannot help but marvel at the goals scored against this Germany, gray, unknown, without character.

They had already had a bad start to this European Championship, losing the first match to France. It had qualified in extremis in the group stage, risking for a good part of the match to be eliminated.

And, indeed, they were eliminated, without shame or glory in the round of 16 by a discreet England, sober and aware of their real possibilities.

And, as I have said more than once in these comments, one hundred percent focused. An inescapable requirement to move forward.

Seeing the two goals scored against Germany is a sign of the end of the period.

The first raking cross finds Sterling alone in front of the goalkeeper and between two German defenders to push it into the back of the net. Not even a "normal" Neuer could prevent it.

And the second was an amateur goal. A half-high cross. That cross that any defender can push away with any part of his body.

The English striker only has to bend slightly to simulate a "palomira! for the TV and celebrate the goal.

That's how England won. And that's how Germany lost.

After having seen such spectacular goals in the other matches, those of England and Germany seem from another planet.

Especially considering who went to suffer them.

Final point for a team that had been dragging pitifully the laurels of old glories.

And starting point for a team that is not even brilliant, fully aware of its limitations and, what perhaps makes it truly dangerous: a tactical discipline applied from the teacher to the pupils. It's as simple as that.

SUECIA 1 - UCRANIA 2 / SWEDEN 1 - UKRAINE 2

21.-Octavos-Suecia1-Ucrania-2 banner.png

In the last play of extra time, Ukraine secured a place in the quarterfinals.

/The incredible celebration of the players led by the remembered Andriy Shevchenko.

Did anyone think before the start of this European Championship that Sweden and Ukraine would meet in the Round of 16 and one of the two would advance to the quarterfinals?

I really don't think so. Unless you are Ukrainian or Swedish. And with the benefit of hindsight.

Although looking at their groups of origin (C and E) it was not so illogical to suppose it.

The truth is that after an entertaining first half (Ukraine struck first after half an hour and Sweden equalized with an excellent shot by their number ten in the last minutes of the first half) both understood that taking risks in the second half was dangerous.

And so each preferred to bet on the opponent's mistakes rather than on their own merits.

And the match was gradually diluted in the characteristic inconsistency of soccer conservatism: "I don't risk if you don't risk".

Thus, the second half and even the extra time went by without glory.

And in the last play in the last minute of the added time (already in stoppage time) Ukraine had the intuition that maybe by attacking in depth they could get a prize. The opponent would not even have time for a counterattack.

Something like the basketball player who waits until the last moment of the game to shoot the three-pointer. And in some cases he gets it right.

And in this case, Ukraine got it right, too, through Dovbyk. And that's how they won the match and advanced to the quarterfinals when the Swedish players were thinking about who would take the penalty kicks.

Have you ever felt that matches last 90 minutes (in this case 120')? It is not a cliché. It is reality. And those who respect it and play with it in mind sometimes get their (well-deserved) reward.

Ukraine has not been the only one in this European Championship to win this award.
