Se da este mismo año dentro de la NFL el 1er de nombre y de ciudad de un equipo, en esta oportunidad los Dallas Texans se establecen en la ciudad de Kansas City y pasan a llamarse Kansas City Chiefs.

En 1969 la liga establece el formato el formato para los playoffs , el mismo está vigente hasta la fecha, para 1970 comienzan las trasmisiones del celebre Monday Night Football, los derechos los adquiere la cadena CBS para trasmitir los juegos de temporada oficial todos los lunes en la noche, en la actualidad la cadena líder en deportes ESPN tiene dichos derechos y aún se trasmiten en horario estelar estos partidos.

Para 1974 ocurre un cambio que da a los narradores y espectadores una mejor información de la posición de cada jugador en el terreno de juego, para ello los números en las camisetas llevan una numeración , que establece que los mariscales de campo llevaran los números del 1 al 19 , del 20 al 49 running backs y defensive backs , 50 al 59 para los centros y linieros, 60 al 79 para los linieros defensivos y los linieros ofensivos , 80 al 89 para los receptores y alas cerradas; el controversial jugador y miembro del salon de la fama, Orenthal James Simpson, mejor conocido como O.J Simpson, se convierte en el 1er jugador en correr 2.000 yardas en una sola temporada . en 1976 la ciudad de Seattle recibe franquicia de la NFL para conformar un equipo, para la escogencia del nombre se abre una encuesta en la ciudad y se escoge el nombre actual Halcones Marinos Seattle.
