(ESP-ENG) ¿Xabi Alonso llegó al Olimpo? - [Opinión]
Hello friends, good vibes to all.
When José Mourinho won the Champions League with Porto in 2004, everyone turned their attention to the Portuguese, because we were talking about a coach who for many people was unknown, the only important thing he had achieved was being assistant coach at Barcelona during Louis Van Gaal's era. With Xabi Alonso the unknown does not apply but it is true that as a coach he had not been presented in the elite, coaching in the lower levels of Real Sociedad and Real Madrid does not count. All that changed when this season he decided to take over a team that had not won the Bundesliga for 119 years and had only 2 titles to its credit. So, will the looks and a possible jump come into Xabi's life...?
On top of that and no less important, Leverkusen puts an end to Bayern Munich's overwhelming streak of eleven consecutive seasons as champion and does it, to top it off, undefeated. What "La Xabineta" has given us this season is something crazy, it has been a perfect functionality in all lines, a game focused on possession and ball handling in the midfield as few teams in Europe have it but above all it is a mental issue, many times this team has been down on the scoreboard and inexplicably they have come back from games that seemed impossible to win and all this is thanks to the winning DNA that the Spaniard injected to this club.
Being the best team in Europe, with the best undefeated streak in history, with the opportunity to continue making those numbers bigger because the season is not over yet, having the chance to win the treble because it is still in the Europa League and German Cup and all this achieved with a fairly average squad I think the merit that has is gigantic. All this makes me ask myself the initial question, are all the above mentioned reasons enough to consider Xabi Alonso a top coach? - If we were talking about a club with more name and history probably this would go unnoticed, there would not be so much noise, but being a team that is zero known for winning and figure I think the recognition has to be there. There are those who compare this to what Rainieri's Leicester did in the 2015-2016 season but to me it's nothing like that.
Because it's not just winning, it's how you achieve it, it's how you achieve results in such an overwhelming and convincing way; that's the real magic of Xabi Alonso. I think time will tell if he deserves to be at the top, if he were to win everything he is still competing for there would be no doubt about it. Imagine this Bayer 04 Leverkusen wins the treble, let's do this exercise, could it not be considered one of the top feats of contemporary soccer? - We go back to Mourinho who also achieved this with Porto winning the League, Cup and UEFA. Comparisons are odious but if I want to talk about coaches I have to look for someone who has had a similar context. One positive thing is that we already know that he is going to stay in this Leverkusen next season to be able to play in the Champions League and thus continue to add to this extraordinary epic.
I think that the worst thing that can happen to Alonso is that the press and the fans themselves deify him, fortunately he had it clear and decided to stay at the club. A mistake would have been to have gone to another more "important" team just for what he did this season. For me he is not in the Olympus, I think he is not even close to it, the road is very long to even be considered to be in that mountain of the greats. But does it exist? - The truth is that no, but it is known that there are coaches who could be considered the most influential and important and be in that select group of the best. In the end all this is subjective because it will depend on the eye and the mind with which it is measured but still I have three that are the ones who are at the top: Carlo Ancelotti, Pep Guardiola and Jose Mourinho; in that same order.
Xabi Alonso is on his way to being one of the top players in the world, he has clear ideas, he is a methodical guy, a guy who as a player was privileged because his vision of the game was enviable and that helps to understand the game a little more from off the field. The demand will be greater, people will be expecting more from him, when he loses a game some will say it is the end of the world because he accustomed everyone to be a winner all the time. Personally I consider myself a big fan of what he did this season even if I am not a big fan of the Bundesliga, I feel that the best is yet to come. I hope he manages to win the remaining titles, being the most dominant team in Europe it would be a shame if they only leave with one trophy at the end of the season.

Saludo!!
