Greetings dear friends of the sport! The last few months have been quite fateful in every way, the pandemic has ended countless lives, and activities as mundane as working or studying, and as busy as following our favorite sport have changed quite a bit.

Many people we knew and admired, have passed away in the last year, (many not because of COVID but for some reason their departure coincided in these times) in the case of the major leagues, the number of Hall of Fame players, deceased in these months is amazing, and compared to other years almost incomparable. players like Al Kaline, Bob Gibson, among others to mention below.

Last week two great former players passed away. Don Sutton (a 324-game winner) and Henry "Hank" Aaron, possibly the best right-handed slugger in history (at least in my opinion, because he hit 755 homeruns in an era favorable to pitchers, and still holds the record for most bases reached and towed).

I recently re-watched a movie called the field of dreams starring Kevin Costner, which was basically about how if the protagonist built a baseball field the great players, including Joe "Shoelees" Jackson, would go there to play.

Without delving too much into the plot of the movie (excellent by the way), it aroused my curiosity to know how that dream team would be made up of the great players who had passed away in the last months. The result is impressive (I cheated a bit by including Aaron and Sutton who passed away just this month, but their departure was the inspiration to compile this), the starting rotation made up of Hall of Famers, relievers who were starters in their time and a fearsome lineup.

Here's what that team would look like on the field.

**Catcher Hal Smith: A member of the 1960 World Series winning team, he was in the big leagues for 10 seasons, and despite never being an unquestioned starter, he helped win the World Series with a home run in the eighth inning of the final game, earning him a spot on this dream team. He passed away on January 9, 2020 at age 89 source

First baseman Dick Allen: One of the best players of the 1960s, MVP in 1972, 7 times to the All-Star game, hit 6 times over 30 homers, retired at age 35 after 15 seasons, without the off-field problems, could have gotten over 450 hr. He died on December 7 while awaiting a place in the Hall of Fame via the Veterans Committee.sourcesource

Second Base Joe Morgan: Member of the Big Red Machine, two-time World Series winner, two-time Most Valuable Player, 10 All-Star Games, 5 Gold Gloves, simply one of the best second basemen of all time, had speed, occasional power, excellent defense, even got on base on a recurring basis, the complete package. He passed away on October 11 at the age of 77...sourcesource

Shortstop Tony Fernández: A great player, although not a hall of famer, his 4 gold gloves and 5 all-star games, as well as the 1993 champion with toronto make him a very solid shortstop among anyone who has played in the major leagues, with 17 seasons, died on February 17 at age 57. sourcesource

Third base Denis Menke: Although he played mostly shortstop, I have decided to place the two-time all-star as a third baseman because he was a versatile player, and was a starter not only at third but also at second base (in 1968 he replaced Joe Morgan due to injury in Houston). He died on December 1 at age 80. sourcesource

Lf Lou Brock: One of the best on the bases in the history of the sport, he stole 118 bases in 1974 culminating his illustrious career with a total of 938, 6 time all star and two time world series champion, Brock was inducted into the hall of fame in 1985. source

Cf Al kaline: One of the best and most consistent right handed hitters, Mr Tiger, played primarily at Rf but with Aaron on the team, I place him at Cf where he played a couple of seasons in his early days, with 399 homeruns, tied with Andres Galarraga, although he never hit 30 or more, is that this player did much more than bat, his 18 all-star games, and 10 gold gloves are impressive awards, batting champion in 1955, won the world series in 1968, inducted into the hall of fame in 1980, passed away on April 6 at age 85. sourcesource

Rf Hank Aaron: For many the true homerun king is still the all-time leader in total bases reached and RBIs, 1957 Champion, 25 all-star games, 1957 MVP, 3 gold gloves, 15 seasons with 30+ homers (8 with 40+) even went 30-30 in 1963, inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1982, was 86 when he passed away on January 22, 2021 sourcesource

Designated Hitter: Jim Wynn: with the approaching permanent establishment of this position in both leagues (for me it is a matter of time) I decided to place a designated hitter in Wynn (played center field but Kaline and Aaron were gold glove winners) who was a power hitter for hpuston in the 1960's, 3 times to the all-star game, had a career high 37 homers in 1967sourcesource

Tom Seaver: 1969 World Series winner,12 times to the All-Star game. three-time Cy Young finished his career with 311 wins and 3640 strikeouts, inducted in 1992 into the Hall of Fame with 98.8 percent of the vote, at the time the most voted player in history,I think that says it all about his career. He was 75 years old when he passed away on August 31.sourcesource

Bob Gibson: A dominant on the mound, his 1.12 ERA is still the lowest in modern baseball, won 251 games, with over 3000 K's, winner of 2 Cy Yung awards, was a leader on his team that won two world series, and faced like other players of color in his era discrimination. He was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1981, and died on October 2 at the age of 84.sourcesource

Phil Niekro: The king of the knuckleball, he reached the impressive figure of 318 games won, the long-lived pitcher retired at the age of 48 winning 121 of his games after turning 40. he went to the all-star game 5 times, and an equal number of times won the gold glove,. Inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1997, he was 81 years old when he passed away on December 26. sourcesource

Don Sutton: a very consistent pitcher winning at least 15 games, 12 different years and 10 or more 21 times, went to the All-Star game 4 times with 324 wins and over 350 strikeouts. He was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1998. He passed away at the age of 75 on January 19, 2021.sourcesource

Whitey Ford: The Yankees winningest pitcher with 236, helped them win no less than 6 world series championships, the pitcher with the winningest winning percentage, most wins for a 200 game winner since 1900, had a Cy Ypung award in 1961, won the ldertof effectiveness 2 times and went to 10 all-star games, entered the hall of fame in 1974 and was 91 years old when he passed away on October 8 last year.sourcesource

As you can see there are some great ballplayers who left a permanent mark on the sport, many of whom excelled in the 1960s, and there are several interesting coincidences, Brock and Gbson were teammates in the two World Series won by the St. Louis Cardinals in the 1960s, Menke, Morgan and Wynn were teammates in Houston, Al Kaline faced Aaron in a Homerun Derby program in the 50's and Bob Gibson and St Louis twice in the world series, Menke also played with Aaron on the Braves, Morgan and Seaver played together in the Red machinery.
