Normalmente cuando estamos en una tertulia social y nos metemos en el ámbito deportivo, obviamente cada quién tendrá su opinión sobre quién fue o es el más grande atleta en una disciplina en particular o sobre cual deporte es el más popular en un país determinado. Y si te conminaran a elegir al mejor deportista de la historia, ¿a quién elegirías? Difícil, ¿cierto? Difícil porque hay un montón de nombres rutilantes que rápidamente nos vendrían a la mente y seguramente el primero que nos llegue es aquel que con sus actuaciones es el que más nos impactó o lo sigue haciendo.
Normally when we are in a social gathering and we get into sports, obviously everyone will have their own opinion about who was or is the greatest athlete in a particular discipline or which sport is the most popular in a particular country. And if you were asked to choose the greatest athlete in history, who would you choose? Difficult, isn't it? Difficult because there are a lot of glittering names that would quickly come to mind and surely the first one that comes to mind is the one whose performances have had the greatest impact on us or continue to have the greatest impact on us.

2 Ali Cassius Marcellus Clay, Jr
Desde muy chico he sido seguidor del deporte de las narices chatas, pero para entonces ya Muhamad Alí estaba en la etapa final de su carrera, por lo que sólo pude tener acceso a 1 sola de sus peleas, en éste caso fue ante Larry holmes, ante quien cayó derrotado en una de sus últimas peleas. De manera que no pude apreciarlo en el esplendor de su carrera. Sin embargo, me he documentado bastante sobre su trayectoria y la verdad es que hay que quitarse el sombrero ante éste insigne deportista.

Debido a sus logros individuales y con sus equipos, considero a Babe Ruth como el tercer mejor atleta de la historia deportiva, pués su calidad como lanzador y como bateador en aquellos tiempos en los cuales la pelota era menos salidora, no tienen ningún tipo de comparación. Ciertamente hoy por hoy sus cifras de jonrones han sido superados por Roger Maris y más recientemente por Barry Bons, pero su legado fue superior al los dos citados anteriormente, puesto que Ruth fue la figura que impulsó al béisbol y motivó a los jóvenes a seguir sus pasos. Se imaginan cuantos jonrones pudiera conectar Ruth actualmente? Difícil de pronosticar, pero con una pelota tan salidora como la que se utiliza actualmente en MLB, seguramente las cifras de jonrones en una campaña serian escandalosas.

Ciertamente sobre éste particular hay muchas opiniones, toda vez que siempre ha tenido la eterna comparación con Pelé y ahora mismo Messi y Cristiano Ronaldo están tocando a la puerta de los dos antes mencionados. Sin embargo, su prestancia, su liderazgo en una cancha, su capacidad para decidir un juego de fútbol eran inigualables. Quien haya tenido el place de ver jugar a Diego difícilmente se resistió a la calidad individual que atesoraba en sus botines.
